Total Neutron Cross Section of Water

Experimental validation of the temperature behavior of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 thermal scattering kernel for light water

The Neutron Physics Department at Centro Atómico Bariloche developed new models for the interaction of thermal neutrons with water which have been validated against experimental data, including new thermal scattering experiments, and were adopted for the release of ENDF/B-VIII.0. Although the older models are, in general, good for most applications, some discrepancies had appeared in the case of heavy water, and this motivated new measurements that validated the new model. In the case of light water, the new model predicts a reduction of the total cross section around 0.025 eV when the temperature is increased from room temperature. This reduction, that is not predicted by the existing models, and potentially affects the calculation of temperature reactivity coefficients in nuclear reactors, has been traced to a shift in the vibrational frequency spectrum of liquid water. The only experimental data previously available is from an experiment performed at the Demokritos reactor in the ’60s at 293 K and 473 K, which validates the new model when the cross section ratios are computed. In order to verify this effect at a lower temperature range, a transmission experiment was carried out at the VESUVIO spectrometer in the ISIS facility in the UK in June 2018, measuring the total neutron cross section in the range from 283 K to 353 K. Here, we present this new experimental data and its comparison with the models.

Visualization of supercritical water pseudo-boiling at Widom line crossover

Supercritical water is a green solvent used in many technological applications including materials synthesis, nuclear engineering, bioenergy, or waste treatment and it occurs in nature. Despite its relevance in natural systems and technical applications, the supercritical state of water is still not well understood. Recent theories predict that liquid-like (LL) and gas-like (GL) supercritical water are metastable phases, and that the so-called Widom line zone is marking the crossover between LL and GL behavior of water. With neutron imaging techniques, we succeed to monitor density fluctuations of supercritical water while the system evolves rapidly from LL to GL as the Widom line is crossed during isobaric heating. Our observations show that the Widom line of water can be identified experimentally and they are in agreement with the current theory of supercritical fluid pseudo-boiling. This fundamental understanding allows optimizing and developing new technologies using supercritical water as a solvent.

Supercritical water exists in gas- and liquid-like forms, but these have not been distinguished yet at the macroscale. Here the authors investigate supercritical water interacting with microporous carbon by neutron imaging, and observe the coexistence of gas- and liquid-like states upon crossing the Widom line.

Search for anomalous effects in H2O/D2O mixtures by neutron total cross section measurements

We investigate anomalies ascribed to quantum entanglement phenomena recently reported in deep inelastc neutron scattering (DINS) measurements by an independent neutron technique on H(2)O/D(2)O mixtures. We performed transmission experiments to study several liquid H(2)O/D(2)O mixtures at room temperature in the epithermal energy range. We obtain the total cross sections of the mixtures, which are in agreement with the expected results according to the tabulated values within a 0.3% relative error. We observe no anomalies and stress the limitations of the validity of the data-processing procedures employed in the DINS experiments where the anomalies were reported.
