Online dental trauma course for medical education

A literature review identified a knowledge deficit among medical doctors about dental trauma management. To overcome this knowledge gap, a proposal to integrate dental traumatology teaching into the medical curriculum was made to raise medical students' awareness of, and familiarity with managing dental injuries. Despite the challenges of teaching dental trauma, online courses are viewed as a practical learning approach for students to access course material during their busy university schedules. In focusing on the constructivist model, this article details the design and development of the online dental trauma course. It is an example of a learner-led, fully online course. The six steps involved in the course development were as follows: (1) structured order from preclinical to clinical topics; (2) content covering all essential information on TDI diagnosis and management; (3) illustrative materials to support engagement and motivation to complete the course; (4) feedback processes to evaluate the learning process; (5) interactions between peers, educators, and learning materials to help facilitate learning; and (6) content that encompasses mainly visual learning styles. The online dental trauma course has the potential to make important contributions to medical education.

Most surface learning in the third year: Dental student learning approaches and implications for curriculum and assessment

CONTEXT

Dental schools seek to educate students to become inclined toward self-directed, lifelong learning, an important mindset for healthcare professionals that may be linked to deep versus surface learning approaches. Students using a deep learning approach are more intrinsically motivated and actively engage in higher-order thinking, while those using a surface learning approach are more extrinsically motivated and aim for passive learning.

OBJECTIVES

Because student learning approaches can be influenced by a wide variety of learning experiences, we sought to understand how student approaches to learning differ by year in dental school and are related to academic achievement.

METHODS

A total of 244 students in a 4-year dental school program in South Korea voluntarily participated in this study. We collected data on school year and academic achievement, and approaches to learning of participants using the validated Study Processes Questionnaire to assess learning approach, which included the constructs of deep motive, deep strategy, surface motive, and surface strategy.

RESULTS

We conducted 3 sets of statistical analyses and found that most students adopted a deep approach to learning (DAL) in their first and second years (Y1 and Y2), with third-year students (Y3) showing heavy dependence on a surface approach to learning (SAL) and sharp drops in intrinsic motives. Student approaches to learning were not significantly related to academic achievement. In the first 2 years of dental school, students tended to adopt a DAL, and viewed their learning as personal growth and their profession as necessitating deep intellectual inquiry.

CONCLUSIONS

In the third year, the change from a DAL to a SAL coincided with entry to clinical training. The lack of integration of biomedical science (Y1 and Y2) and clinical science (Y3 and Y4), and increased stress in the initial clinical context may account for this difference. The poor correlation between a DAL and high achievement may indicate a need for change in assessment methods. This study hopes to stimulate reflection regarding student learning approaches and educational efforts that prepare future dentists for lifelong learning.

Dental students' perception of their approaches to learning in a PBL programme

AIM

To compare dental students' perceptions of their learning approaches between different years of a problem-based learning (PBL) programme. The hypothesis was that in a comparison between senior and junior students, the senior students would perceive themselves as having a higher level of deep learning approach and a lower level of surface learning approach than junior students would. This hypothesis was based on the fact that senior students have longer experience of a student-centred educational context, which is supposed to underpin student learning.

PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS

Students of three cohorts (first year, third year and fifth year) of a PBL-based dental programme were asked to respond to a questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) developed to analyse students' learning approaches, that is deep approach and surface approach, using four subscales including deep strategy, surface strategy, deep motive and surface motive. The results of the three cohorts were compared using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). A P-value was set at <0.05 for statistical significance.

RESULTS

The fifth-year students demonstrated a lower surface approach than the first-year students (P = 0.020). There was a significant decrease in surface strategy from the first to the fifth year (P = 0.003). No differences were found concerning deep approach or its subscales (deep strategy and deep motive) between the mean scores of the three cohorts.

CONCLUSIONS

The results did not show the expected increased depth in learning approaches over the programme years.

Evaluating the effectiveness of a laboratory-based professional development program for science educators

The process of developing effective science educators has been a long-standing objective of the broader education community. Numerous studies have recommended not only depth in a teacher's subject area but also a breadth of professional development grounded in constructivist principles, allowing for successful student-centered and inquiry-based instruction. Few programs, however, have addressed the integration of the scientific research laboratory into the science classroom as a viable approach to professional development. Additionally, while occasional laboratory training programs have emerged in recent years, many lack a component for translating acquired skills into reformed classroom instruction. Given the rapid development and demand for knowledgeable employees and an informed population from the biotech and medical industries in recent years, it would appear to be particularly advantageous for the physiology and broader science education communities to consider this issue. The goal of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a laboratory-based professional development program focused on the integration of reformed teaching principles into the classrooms of secondary teachers. This was measured through the program's ability to instill in its participants elevated academic success while gaining fulfillment in the classroom. The findings demonstrated a significant improvement in the use of student-centered instruction and other reformed methods by program participants as well as improved self-efficacy, confidence, and job satisfaction. Also revealed was a reluctance to refashion established classroom protocols. The combination of these outcomes allowed for construction of an experiential framework for professional development in applied science education that supports an atmosphere of reformed teaching in the classroom.
