Abstract
Testes are very prone to be damaged by environmental pollutants, but there is a lack of information about the impact of "chemical cocktails" (CC) on the testicular metabolome and the possible influence in the gut-gonad crosstalk. For this, BALB/c mice were given flumequine and diclofenac orally in food and potentially toxic trace elements (Cd, Hg, As) in drinking water. A mice group was supplemented with selenium, a well-known antagonist against many pollutants. Our results revealed that the steroid 5-alpha-androstan-17-beta-ol propionate, suggested as a parameter of androgenicity independent of testosterone levels, proline that improves reproductive indicators in male rabbits affected by environmental stress) among others metabolites are only present after CC exposure with rodent and selenium supplemented diet. Selenium also antagonized the up-or down-regulation of anandamide (20:l, n-9) (p < 0.001 and FC 0.54 of CC vs C but p > 0,05 and FC 0.74 of CC-Se vs C), that regulates gonadotropin-releasing hormones in mammals, 2,3-dinor-11b-PGF2a (p < 0.001 and FC 0.12 of CC vs C but p > 0,05 and FC 0.34 of CC-Se vs C), which has been related with reproductive hormones, besides others testicular metabolites altered by the exposure to the CC and reversed the levels to control. Moreover, numerous significant associations between gut microbes and testicular metabolites indicated a possible impact of pollutants in the testes mediated by gut microbiota due to a gut-gonad crosstalk.

Proteomics Provide Insight into the Interaction between Selenite and the Microalgae Dunaliella salina. Processes (Basel) 2023. Abstract
Dunaliella salina is currently one of the most commercially valuable microalgae species in the world. In reponse to selenite, D. salina is a microalgae with a high selenium content, thereby increasing its value, which is crucial for increasing its economic value as a nutrional supplement. However, the effects of selenite on D. salina are still unclear, and its molecular mechanism of the response to selenite stress is also elusive. Here, in order to study the effects of selenite on D. salina and the corresponding regulatory mechanism, we characterized the physiological phenotypes of D. salina under different selenite concentrations and carried out a quantitative proteomic study. The results showed that the effective concentration for 50% growth inhibition (EC50) of the algae was 192.7 mg/L after 11 days of cultivation. When selenite concentration was lower than 100 mg/L, selenite did not hinder the growth of D. salina in the early stage, but shortened the cell growth cycle, although cell growth was significantly inhibited when the concentration of selenium was higher than 250 mg/L. Bioaccumulation experiments showed that the content of intracellular selenium in D. salina cells reached the highest level under the treatment with 50 mg/L selenite, and the contents of total selenium and organic selenium in D. salina cells were 499.77 μg/g and 303.01 μg/g (dry weight), respectively. Proteomic analysis revealed that a series of proteins related to stress responses, amino acid metabolism and energy production pathways were profoundly altered by the selenite treatment. Glutathione peroxidase (GPX7), a selenium-containing protein, was identified in the group given the selenium treatment. Moreover, proteins involved in photoreactions and oxidative phosphorylation were significantly upregulated, indicating that D. salina effectively balanced the energy demand and energy production under selenite stress. This study provides novel insights into the responses to selenite of D. salina, a microalgae candidate as a biological carrier of selenium and would be helpful for the development of industrial strains rich in selenium.

Abstract
Introduction: Selenium plays many key roles in health especially in connection with cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. However, it needs to be appreciated that the essentiality/toxicity of selenium depends on both, a narrow range of concentration and the chemical specie involved. In this context, selenoproteins are essential biomolecules against these disorders, mainly due to its antioxidant action. To this end, analytical methodologies may allow identifying and quantifying individual selenospecies in human biofluids and tissues. Areas covered: This review focus on the role of selenoproteins in medicine, with special emphasis in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, considering the possible link with gut microbiota. In particular, this article reviews the analytical techniques and procedures recently developed for the absolute quantification of selenoproteins and selenometabolites in human biofluids and tissues. Expert commentary: The beneficial role of selenium in human health has been extensively studied and reviewed. However, several challenges remain unsolved as discussed in this article: (i) speciation of selenium (especially selenoproteins) in cancer and neurodegenerative disease patients; (ii) supplementation of selenium in humans using functional foods and nutraceuticals; (iii) the link between selenium and selenoproteins expression and the gut microbiota and (iv) analytical methods and pitfalls for the absolute quantification of selenoproteins and selenometabolites.

Abstract
Laboratory algal cultures exposed to selenate were shown to produce and release selenomethionine, selenomethionine oxide, and several other organic selenium metabolites. Released discrete organic selenium species accounted for 1.6-13.1% of the selenium remaining in the media after culture death, with 1.3-6.1% of the added selenate recovered as organic metabolites. Analysis of water from an industrially impacted river collected immediately after the death of massive annual algal blooms showed that no selenomethionine or selenomethionine oxide was present. However, other discrete organic selenium species, including a cyclic oxidation product of selenomethionine, were observed, indicating the previous presence of selenomethionine. Industrial biological treatment systems designed for remediation of selenium-contaminated waters were shown to increase both the concentration of organic selenium species in the effluent, relative to influent water, and the fraction of organic selenium to up to 8.7% of the total selenium in the effluent, from less than 1.1% in the influent. Production and emission of selenomethionine, selenomethionine oxide, and other discrete organic selenium species were observed. These findings are discussed in the context of potentially increased selenium bioavailability caused by microbial activity in aquatic environments and biological treatment systems, despite overall reductions in total selenium concentration.
