Parent involvement approach and changes in eating pathology within an adolescent obesity intervention

BACKGROUND

Although adolescents with obesity have heightened risk for eating pathology, the impact of differential parent involvement on eating pathology after obesity treatment is unknown. We examined differences in eating pathology in adolescents whose parents were randomized to distinct interventions within adolescent obesity treatment.

METHODS

Participants were 82 adolescent/parent dyads (adolescents: 63 % female; 55 % racial/ethnically marginalized) enrolled in TEENS+, a 4-month behavioral weight loss intervention. Parents were randomized to either a parent weight loss treatment (TEENS+PWL) or parent skills training (TEENS+PAC). Adolescents completed the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire with Instructions (EDE-Q-I) and Child Depression Inventory (CDI) at baseline, 4 m, and 7 m. Group differences in eating pathology (global score; eating concern, weight concern, shape concern, restraint) and depression across time points were evaluated with linear mixed models.

RESULTS

No significant differences were observed between TEENS+PAC and TEENS+PWL in eating pathology or depression, nor were there group by time interactions. Time point differences were observed for all EDE-Q-I and CDI outcomes, except eating concerns; pairwise contrasts revealed a variety of change patterns. Weight and shape concerns decreased from 0 to 4 m; observed reductions were maintained at 7 m. Restraint was highest at 4 m and decreased at 7 m but did not return to baseline. EDE-Q-I global scores significantly declined over time. Depression decreased over time, but a significant difference was only observed between 0 and 7 m.

CONCLUSIONS

Neither parent intervention yields harm related to eating pathology in adolescents engaged in obesity treatment. Obesity treatment does not appear to have iatrogenic effects on eating pathology in adolescents.

Associations of Anthropometric, Behavioral, and Social Factors on Level of Body Esteem in Peripubertal Girls

OBJECTIVE

Lower body esteem may decrease self-esteem and lead to adverse health effects in children. This study explored the role of anthropometric, behavioral, and social factors on body esteem in peripubertal girls.

METHOD

We evaluated associations of body esteem (measured by the Revised Body Esteem Scale) with body mass index (BMI), mother's BMI, puberty, physical activity, role models for appearance, and screen time among girls (ages 9 and 10) participating in the Jersey Girl Study (n = 120). Linear models were used to evaluate differences in body esteem scores.

RESULTS

Overweight/obese girls had a significantly lower mean body esteem score compared with underweight/healthy weight girls {14.09 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 12.53-15.27) vs. 17.17 (95% CI: 16.87-17.43)}. Girls who were physically active for at least 7 hours per week had a significantly higher body esteem score than those who were less active, after adjusting for BMI (17.00 [95% CI: 16.62-17.32] vs. 16.39 [95% CI: 15.82-16.86]). Girls whose mothers were overweight/obese, who had entered puberty, and who cited girls at school or females in the media as role models had lower body esteem scores, but differences disappeared after adjusting for girl's BMI. A trend of higher body esteem scores was found for girls whose mothers were role models.

CONCLUSION

Lower BMI and higher levels of physical activity are independently associated with higher body esteem score. Having classmates or girls/women in the media as role models may detrimentally affect girls' body esteem, but having mothers as role models may have a positive effect.

Postpartum unconscious dynamics emerging from the Lüscher color test in Ethiopian women

The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of the Lüscher color test (LCT), a psychological instrument based on theory that colors are selected in unconscious way and that the color sensory perception of color is objective and universal. The research has involved 24 Ethiopian women, which delivered at the Getche Health Center in Gurage. It seemed to be relevant for the majority of Ethiopian women identify the rejected color (58.66%), the gray, than the favorite color, the yellow 33.33%). The yellow color suggests that they better express their personality in a physical context, while the gray color indicates that they want to live this experience intensely. This exploratory work lays the foundations for further studies in disadvantaged women, both in developing low-income Countries as well as in industrialized Countries characterized by an high level of emigration, and for clinical applications by the complete LCT version.

Youth as partners, participants or passive recipients: a review of children and adolescents in community-based participatory research (CBPR)

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an orientation to research that places value on equitable collaborations between community members and academic partners, reflecting shared decision making throughout the research process. Although CBPR has become increasingly popular for research with adults, youth are less likely to be included as partners. In our review of the literature, we identified 399 articles described by author or MeSH keyword as CBPR related to youth. We analyzed each study to determine youth engagement. Not including misclassified articles, 27 % of percent of studies were community-placed but lacked a community partnership and/or participatory component. Only 56 (15 %) partnered with youth in some phase of the research process. Although youth were most commonly involved in identifying research questions/priorities and in designing/conducting research, most youth-partnered projects included children or adolescents in several phases of the research process. We outline content, methodology, phases of youth partnership, and age of participating youth in each CBPR with youth project, provide exemplars of CBPR with youth, and discuss the state of the youth-partnered research literature.
