Primitive Neuroectodermal Neoplasia in Coho Salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch

Malignant dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour in a zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Neuroectodermal tumours in man, including medulloblastoma, medulloepithelioma, neuroblastoma, esthesioneuroblastoma, primitive neuroectodermal tumour and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour, typically occur in children and young adults. These tumour types are occasionally observed in juvenile and adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) either as induced tumours in carcinogen-exposed zebrafish or as an incidental finding in zebrafish≥2years of age. An adult zebrafish submitted for routine histological examination was sent for a second opinion consultation after an uncharacteristic brain mass was identified. Microscopically, the expansile and infiltrative extracortical mass arising from the cerebellum had a diffuse microcystic pattern with solid hypercellular regions occupying 80% of the extrameningeal space and effacing the endomeninx and significantly displacing the metencephalon. The mass was composed of dense sheets of oligodendrocyte-like cells, random neurons and pseudocysts containing 'floating neurons' within a scant mucinous matrix. Neoplastic cells demonstrated positive perinuclear and intracytoplasmic expression of S-100. Malignant dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour was diagnosed based on the histological features of the brain mass, which were indistinguishable from the human tumour. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour in a zebrafish.

Neuronal Embryonal Tumors in Fish

This article describes 11 cases of neuronal embryonal neoplasia in captive adult teleost fish. Neoplasms were located within 1 or both eyes of 8 fish and the skin of 3 other fish. Ocular neoplasms most often presented as unilateral or bilateral exophthalmia. Seven ocular and 1 cutaneous mass were composed of small triangular (carrot-shaped) neoplastic cells with Flexner-Wintersteiner-type rosette formation. Mass location and histologic and ultrastructural features were suggestive of retinoblastomas. One ocular mass was composed of ribbons and rosettes of neoplastic cells with multiple areas of neuronal differentiation and was diagnosed as a teratoid medulloepithelioma. A cutaneous mass from an electric eel ( Electrophorus electricus) consisted of rosettes and streams of elongate neoplastic cells. The epidermal electroreceptor (ampullary) organ was considered as an origin. Although distant metastases were not observed, neoplasms were generally locally aggressive with postexcision recurrence. There was occasional spread to or de novo occurrence within the contralateral eye.

The immunohistochemical characterization of devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) in the Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii)

Immunohistochemical techniques were used to characterize the disfiguring and debilitating fatal neoplastic disease, devil facial tumor disease (DFTD), which has recently affected a significant proportion of the wild population of Tasmanian Devils (Sarcophilus harrisii). The diagnostic values of a number of immunohistochemical stains were employed to further characterize 50 representative cases. The neoplasms were negative for cytokeratin (0/48), epithelial membrane antigen (0/42), von Willebrand factor (vWF) (0/11), smooth muscle actin (SMA) (0/26), desmin (0/47), glial fibrillary acid protein (0/13), CD16 (0/13), CD57 (0/43), CD3 (0/18), and LSP1 (0/16). DFTD cells were positive for vimentin (50/50), S-100 (41/48), melan A (11/39), neuron specific enolase (35/35), chromogranin A (12/12) and synaptophysin (29/30). The cells were negative for amyloid (0/30) and stained negatively with Singh's silver (0/34) but were weakly argyrophilic (3/40) using Grimelius histochemical stain. These staining characteristics are consistent with cells of neuroectodermal origin.
