Influence of the number of detectors by laser scattering method for estimation of particle size

Effect of the number of detectors on an inversion problem of a scattering pattern by laser scattering method based on Mie scattering model has been investigated. The influence of the number of detectors is obtained by comparing a given size distribution and a calculated size distribution by computer simulation and experimental method. An observing range of scattering angles is from 0.0007 to 2.5 rad. A non-linear iteration method is used for calculating particle size distribution. The number of detectors is changed from 6 to 81 elements by the computer simulation. The algorithm of the inversion problem is applied with mean diameters of log-normal distribution in a range from 0.546 to 214 μm at standard deviation of 0.27 and 0.68. Experimental results of certified mono-disperse polystyrene latex standards and a poly-disperse aluminum sample are obtained with 21, 41, and 81 elements detector, respectively. All tests are performed under conditions at diluted aqueous suspensions. Narrow size distribution is influenced by the number of detectors compared with wide size distribution. Not the number of physical detectors but the number of useful detectors affects the algorithm of the inversion problem. When the detector elements are over 20, the influence of the number of detectors is decreased.

Particle size and refractive index retrieval from the backscattering spectrum of white light using the Twomey iterative method: simulation and experiment

The Twomey iterative method has been applied to the retrieval of hydrosol microphysical properties. In particular, we focused on the retrieval of single and multimode particle size distributions from both simulated and experimental backscattering spectra in the 400-800 nm wavelength range. Assuming a known refractive index, both single-mode and multimode distributions were successfully retrieved through the introduction of an initial distribution biased toward larger particles. The simulation results were experimentally verified with standard polystyrene particles suspended in water within the diameter range of 0.2-2 microm for both narrow and broad monomodal distributions as well as more complicated multimode distributions. Finally, the technique was extended to the retrieval of an unknown refractive index.

Instrument for long-path spectral extinction measurements in air: application to sizing of airborne particles

A novel instrument that is capable of taking spectral extinction measurements over long optical paths (approximately 1-100 m) in the UV, visible, and IR ranges is described. The instrument is fully automated, and the extinction spectrum is acquired in almost real time (approximately 5-10 s) with a resolution of ~3 nm. Its sensitivity and accuracy were estimated by tests carried out in a clean room that showed that, for optical paths between 50 and 100 m, the extinction coefficient can be detected at levels of ~10(-5) m(-1). Tests carried out on calibrated latex particles showed that, when it was combined with an appropriate inversion method, the technique could be profitably applied to characterize airborne particulate distributions. By carrying out measurements over optical paths of ~100 m, the instrument is also capable of detecting extinction coefficients that are due to aerosol concentrations well below the limits imposed by the European Economic Community for atmospheric pollution (150 mug/m(3)). Scaled over optical paths of ~10 m, the limit imposed for particle emissions from industrial plants (10 mg/m(3)) can also be detected sensitively.

Analysis of particle sizes, concentration, and refractive index in measurement of light transmittance in the forward-scattering-angle range

A simple method for determining the mean size, the concentration, and the refractive index of the monodispersion and the polydispersion of particles has been presented. The method is based on the empirical inversion of measurements of forward-angle light-scattering transmittance. The effects of particle size distribution and optical constants on forward-angle-scattering transmittance have been considered by using Mie theory. The proposed method has been used successfully for single latex spheres in water and polydispersed weakly absorbing particles of Al(2) O(3) and SiO(2) in the flow of the propane-air flame combustion products.

Use of sky brightness measurements from ground for remote sensing of particulate polydispersions

The software code SKYEAD.pack for retrieval of aerosol size distribution and optical thickness from data of direct and diffuse solar radiation is described; measurements are carried out with sky radiometers in the wavelength range 0.369-1.048 µm. The treatment of the radiative transfer problem concerning the optical quantities is mainly based on the IMS (improved multiple and single scattering) method, which uses the delta-M approximation for the truncation of the aerosol phase function and corrects the solution for the first- and second-order scattering. Both linear and nonlinear inversion methods can be used for retrieving the size distribution. Improved calibration methods for both direct and diffuse radiation, the data-analysis procedure, the results from the proposed code, and several connected problems are discussed. The results can be summarized as follows: (a) the SKYRAD.pack code can retrieve the columnar aerosol features with accuracy and efficiency in several environmental situations, provided the input parameters are correctly given; (b) when data of both direct and diffuse solar radiation are used, the detectable radius interval for aerosol particles is approximately from 0.03 to 10 µm; (c) besides the retrieval of the aerosol features, the data-analysis procedure also permits the determination of average values for three input parameters (real and imaginary aerosol refractive index, ground albedo) from the optical data; (d) absolute calibrations for the sky radiometer are not needed, and calibrations for direct and diffuse radiation can be carried out with field data; (e) the nonlinear inversion gives satisfactory results in a larger radius interval, without the unrealistic humps that occur with the linear inversion, but the results strongly depend on the first-guess spectrum; (f) aerosol features retrieved from simulated data showed a better agreement with the given data for the linear inversion than for the nonlinear inversion.
