Optical triple-in digital logic using nonlinear optical four-wave mixing

A new programmable optical processor is proposed for implementing triple-in combinatorial digital logic that uses four-wave mixing. Binary-coded decimal-to-octal decoding is experimentally demonstrated by use of a photorefractive BaTiO(3) crystal. The result confirms the feasibility of the proposed system.

Discrete correlators using multiple imaging for digital optical computing

New optical discrete correlators based on multiple-imaging systems with a simple structure and good stability are proposed. The systems are composed of lenses for image duplication and optical shutters for kernel specification. As a result, large throughput can be attained with an incoherent configuration. The throughput of the system is estimated, and several logic operations are demonstrated to verify the usefulness of the proposed systems for digital optical computing. The proposed system will be especially useful for constructing a compact and stable optical computing system.

M input radix p optical logic operations in a photorefractive BaTiO(3) crystal

A generalized coding algorithm for multiple inputs multiple-valued logic operations is proposed. This algorithm can reduce the unused pixels generated in the encoding process of the odd number of inputs. Using circle-type coded patterns and the correlation property in a photorefractive BaTiO(3) crystal, m input radix p logic operations are made possible. Detailed descriptions and advantages of the proposed method are presented and its effectiveness is demonstrated in the case of a three-input binary system. Uses for the proposed method, including binary half-adder/subtractor and binary multiplier, are given.

Polarization-based optical logic using laser-excited gratings

We present a novel way of performing optical logic. The proposed logic device is based on the polarization switching observed in the first-order diffraction from a laser-excited grating in a dye-doped solid.

Parallel digital and symbolic optical computation via optical phase conjugation

The use of the optical phase conjugation (OPC) process for parallel digital and symbolic optical computing is described. Using spatially encoded logic and symbolic variables, various OPC-based parallel ultrafast optical logic, symbolic as well as interconnect processors are detailed. The proposed devices are experimentally verified using picosecond pulses from a mode-locked Nd(3+):YAG laser. Based on these processors, an OPC-based ultrafast optical computing architecture is proposed.
