Design and experimental verification for optical module of optical vector-matrix multiplier

Optical computing is a new method to implement signal processing functions. The multiplication between a vector and a matrix is an important arithmetic algorithm in the signal processing domain. The optical vector-matrix multiplier (OVMM) is an optoelectronic system to carry out this operation, which consists of an electronic module and an optical module. In this paper, we propose an optical module for OVMM. To eliminate the cross talk and make full use of the optical elements, an elaborately designed structure that involves spherical lenses and cylindrical lenses is utilized in this optical system. The optical design software package ZEMAX is used to optimize the parameters and simulate the whole system. Finally, experimental data is obtained through experiments to evaluate the overall performance of the system. The results of both simulation and experiment indicate that the system constructed can implement the multiplication between a matrix with dimensions of 16 by 16 and a vector with a dimension of 16 successfully.

Coherence-multiplexed acousto-optic correlator for signal processing: theory and applications

A method of multichannel processing to compute correlation products simultaneously is introduced. The signals that process are encoded on a single light beam through the use of an electro-optic modulators that induce optical delays greater than the coherence length of light. The coherence-modulated light beam thus obtained is then spatially and temporally modulated through an acousto-optic Bragg cell. The potential number of channels is estimated to be approximately 5-10. The method can be combined with other existing systems, such as time-, space-, or frequency-multiplexed correlators, to increase the channel number. The method also applies to high-resolution spectral analysis.

Integration of a curved hybrid waveguide lens and photodetector array in a GaAs waveguide

For the first time, we believe, the integration of a waveguide lens and a photodetector array in GaAs for operation at a 1.3-microm wavelength is reported. The waveguide lens is a newly devised curved hybrid Fresnel/Bragg chirp grating lens fabricated by the ion-million technique. Desirable performance characteristics, including high throughput efficiency, freedom from coma (up to +/-4 deg off axis), and a near-diffraction-limited focal-spot size, have been demonstrated with this curved hybrid lens. The 10-element photodetector array of the InGaAs photoconducting type shows a measured gain-bandwidth product that is higher than 1 GHz at high frequency, while at a lower frequency the gain is in the range of several thousands. The curved-hybrid-lens-photodetector array combination realized in the GaAs 5 x 13 mm(2) in size has produced a well-resolved element spacing of 10 microm with cross talk that is lower than -14 dB. This lens-photodetector array combination constitutes a basc structure for the realization of monolit ic acousto-optic and electro-optic circuits such as integrated-optic rf spectrum analyzers and multiport switches.

Integrated acoustooptic circuits and applications

The recent development of titanium-indiffusion proton-exchange (TIPE) microlenses and lens arrays has made possible the construction of a variety of single- and multichannel integrated acoustooptic (AO) and acoustooptic-electrooptic (EO) circuits in LiNbO(3) channel-planar waveguides 0.1x1.0x2.0 cm(3) in size. These hybrid AO and AO-EO circuits can be fabricated through compatible and well-established technologies. The most recent realization of ion-milled microlenses and lens arrays together with the recent development of gigahertz AO Bragg modulators and EO Bragg modulator arrays have also paved the way for construction of similar but monolithic AO and AO-EO GaAs/GaAlAs waveguides of comparable size. Both types of integrated AO and AO-EO circuits suggest versatile applications in communications signal processing, and computing. Efficient and simultaneous excitation of the channel waveguide array using an ion-milled planar microlens array has facilitated the demonstration of some of these applications.

Fast digital optical multiplication using an array of binary symmetric logic counters

Because of the lack of fast, accurate, and large dynamic range analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), optical implementation of the digital multiplication through analog convolution (DMAC) algorithm yields a slow digital multiplier. By replacing both the optical adder and ADC arrays by an optical combinatorial logic counter array, a new optical fast digital multiplication method is proposed. Compared to the existing optical DMAC scheme, the new method promises both higher processing speed and accuracy. A comparison of this and some of the other optical and electronic fast digital multiplication schemes is also presented.

Integrated optic matrix-vector multiplier using multifrequency acoustooptic Bragg diffraction

An integrated optic numerical processor performing matrix-vector multiplication in an analog representation is proposed. Parallel processing of a number of numerical products is made in the same area of a substrate by means of multiple Bragg diffraction of multiwavelength optical signals due to multifrequency surface acoustic waves. The wavelength interval of multiplexed optical signals can be 0.77 nm for the optical beamwidth of 3 mm and the acoustic frequency of 1 GHz. Preliminary demonstrations of matrix-vector multiplication are presented with a waveguide type Ti:LiNbO(3) acoustooptic deflector. An alternative processor using one optical wavelength is also described.
