Sparse-wavelength angle-multiplexed volume holographic memory system: analysis and advances

Sensor for monitoring the vibration of a laser beam based on holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal films

A continuous multiple exposure diffraction grating (CMEDG) is fabricated holographically on polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films using two-beam interference with multiple exposures. The grating is fabricated by exposing a PDLC film to 18 repeated exposure/non-exposure cycles with an angular step of ~10°/10° while it revolves a circle on a rotation stage. The structure of the sample thus formed is analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and shows arc-ripples around the center. From the diffraction patterns of the formed grating obtained using a normally incident laser beam, some or all of the 18 recorded arc beams can be reconstructed, as determined by the probing location. Thus, it can be applied for use as a beam-vibration sensor for a laser.

Investigation of multiple holographic recording in azo-dye-doped nematic liquid-crystal film

We report multiple holographic recording and optical address recognition schemes in Methyl Red-doped liquid-crystal film without an applied electric field. Ten gratings are recorded at a single location of a 5 mm2 area by using optical multiplexing methods, and the diffraction efficiencies are studied for multiplexed gratings. Diffraction behavior of angular and peristrophic multiplexed gratings is discussed, and two methods that involve recording angles and peristrophic rotation angles are presented for optical recognition.

Holographic image storage and multiple hologram storage in a planar Methyl Red-doped liquid crystal film

Holographic images are recorded and the diffraction characteristic of the hologram is investigated in a planar Methyl Red-doped liquid crystal film without an external electric field. Multiple holograms are stored in this film with no external electric field, and peristrophic multiplexing, angular multiplexing, and spatial multiplexing are demonstrated to be suited for the implementation of azo-dye doped liquid crystal films among the multiplexing techniques. The diffraction efficiency is theoretically studied for multiple storage. Optical reconstruction for peristrophic multiplexed holograms and angular multiplexed holograms is discussed, which involves the peristrophic rotation angles and the recording angles, respectively.

Real-time edge-enhanced optical correlation with a cerium-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate photorefractive crystal

The nonlinear diffraction property of a volume grating written by two-wave mixing in a cerium-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate crystal is applied in a coherent image processing system to obtain real-time image edge enhancement as well as edge-enhanced optical correlation. The theoretical analysis of the correlator is given, and the experimental results of optical correlation are presented, which are compared with the computer-simulated results.

Combination of free-space and guided-wave optical interconnects for angularly multiplexed multiwavelength holographic memory

We propose and test experimentally a new scheme to implement spatially multiplexed multiwavelength holographic memory. An electro-optically modulated phase grating array on LiNbO(3) substrate is used as a guided-wave interconnect to activate the reconfigurable reference beam. The object beam is provided by free-space interconnect. An electro-optic modulation efficiency of 18 +/- 2.5% is achieved with an applied voltage of 100 V. The reference beams with different diffraction angles can implement the angle-multiplexing holographic recording. We believe this is the first report of the implementation of guided-wave electro-optic interconnect together with free-space interconnect in holographic memory applications.
