Impact and vibration detection in composite materials by using intermodal interference in multimode optical fibers

Numerical modeling of fiber specklegram sensors by using finite element method (FEM)

Although experimental advances in the implementation and characterization of fiber speckle sensor have been reported, a suitable model to interpret the speckle-pattern variation under perturbation is desirable but very challenging to be developed due to the various factors influencing the speckle pattern. In this work, a new methodology based on the finite element method (FEM) for modeling and optimizing fiber specklegram sensors (FSSs) is proposed. The numerical method allows computational visualization and quantification, in near field, of changes of a step multi-mode fiber (SMMF) specklegram, due to the application of a uniformly distributed force line (UDFL). In turn, the local modifications of the fiber speckle produce changes in the optical power captured by a step single-mode fiber (SSMF) located just at the output end of the SMMF, causing a filtering effect that explains the operation of the FSSs. For each external force, the stress distribution and the propagations modes supported by the SMMF are calculated numerically by means of FEM. Then, those modes are vectorially superposed to reconstruct each perturbed fiber specklegram. Finally, the performance of the sensing mechanism is evaluated for different radius of the filtering SSMF and force-gauges, what evidences design criteria for these kinds of measuring systems. Results are in agreement with those theoretical and experimental ones previously reported.

Investigation on sensitivity enhancement for optical fiber speckle sensors

We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study on the sensitivity enhancement for multimode fiber (MMF) speckle sensor. Using mode coupling theory, we derive an expression showing that the sensitivity of the MMF speckle sensor depends on the intensity profile of the MMF modes. Particularly, we use our theory to study the influence of the spatial filtering window on the sensitivity, and the experimental results have found a good agreement with the theory. Our results suggest that the sensitivity of an MMF speckle sensor can be greatly enhanced by adjusting the size and location of the spatial filtering window. An 80-fold improvement on sensitivity was achieved in our experiment, as compared with the conventional MMF speckle sensor with the filtering window placed at the center of the speckle field.

Ultrasonic characterization of delamination in aeronautical composites using noncontact laser generation and detection

The characterization of delamination in composite plates with ultrasonic waves generated and detected by lasers is presented. Composite materials have become one of the most important structural materials in the aviation industry because of their excellent mechanical properties, such as high specific stiffness and antifatigue. This paper reports a new application of the laser ultrasonic technique to perform nondestructive detection of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and continuous-fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFCCs) containing artificial internal defects, based on propagation characteristic of ultrasonic waves generated by pulse laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm and pulse duration of 10 ns. A laser interferometer based on two-wave mixing is used to measure ultrasonic wave signals. The main advantage of this technique over conventional ultrasonic testing techniques is the ability to carry out detection without using coupling agents. The research results prove that the laser ultrasonic technique is effective for the detection of internal defects in both CFRP and CFCC composite components, which should promote and expand the application of the technique in the aviation industry.

Specklegram in a grapefruit fiber and its response to external mechanical disturbance in a single-multiple-single mode fiber structure

Specklegram in multimode fiber has successfully been used as a sensor for detecting mechanical disturbance. Speckles in a multimode pure silica grapefruit fiber are observed and compared to that of a step-index multimode fiber, showing different features between them. The sensitivities to external disturbance of two kinds of fiber were measured, based on single-multiple-single mode (SMS) fiber structure. Experimental results show that the grapefruit fiber shows higher sensitivity than does the step-index multimode fiber. The transmission spectrum of the grapefruit fiber was measured as well, showing some oscillation features that are significantly different from that of a step-index multimode fiber. The experiments may provide suggestions to understand the mechanisms of light propagation in grapefruit fibers.

Specklegram in a multiple-mode fiber and its dependence on longitudinal modes of the laser source

A specklegram in a multimode fiber (MMF) has successfully been used as a sensor for detecting external disturbance. Our experiments showed that the sensitivity in the sensor with a multiple longitudinal-mode laser as its source was much higher than that with a single longitudinal-mode laser. In addition, the near-field pattern observations indicated that the coupling between different transverse modes in the MMF is quite weak. Based on the experimental results, a theoretical model for the speckle formation is proposed, taking a bend-caused phase factor into consideration. It is shown in the theoretical analysis that the interferences between different longitudinal modes make a larger contribution to the specklegram signals.

Damage detection in laminar thermoplastic composite materials by means of embedded optical fibers

This paper investigates the possibility of applying optical fibers as sensors for investigating low energy impact damage in laminar thermoplastic composite materials, in real time. Impact toughness testing by a Charpy impact pendulum with different loads was conducted in order to determine the method for comparative measurement of the resulting damage in the material. For that purpose intensity-based optical fibers were built in to specimens of composite materials with Kevlar 129 (the DuPont registered trade-mark for poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)) woven fabric as reinforcement and thermoplastic PVB (poly(vinyl butyral)) as the matrix. In some specimens part of the layers of Kevlar was replaced with metal mesh (50% or 33% of the layers). Experimental testing was conducted in order to observe and analyze the response of the material under multiple low-energy impacts. Light from the light-emitting diode (LED) was launched to the embedded optical fiber and was propagated to the phototransistor-based photo detector. During each impact, the signal level, which is proportional to the light intensity in the optical fiber, drops and then slowly recovers. The obtained signals were analyzed to determine the appropriate method for real time damage monitoring. The major part of the damage occurs during impact. The damage reflects as a local, temporary release of strain in the optical fiber and an increase of the signal level. The obtained results show that intensity-based optical fibers could be used for measuring the damage in laminar thermoplastic composite materials. The acquired optical fiber signals depend on the type of material, but the same set of rules (relatively different, depending on the type of material) could be specified. Using real time measurement of the signal during impact and appropriate analysis enables quantitative evaluation of the impact damage in the material. Existing methods in most cases use just the intensity of the signal before and after the impact, as the measure of damage. This method could be used to monitor the damage in real time, giving warnings before fatal damage occurs.
