Highly efficient diode-stack, end-pumped Nd:YAG slab laser with symmetrized beam quality

Beam shaping system based on a prism array for improving the throughput of a dispersive spectrometer

A beam shaping system (BSS) for improving the throughput of a dispersive spectrometer is presented by employing two anamorphic lenses and a prism array to segment the beam. The BSS was designed based on the inverse method of beam shaping for laser diode bars and the means of an optical slicer. In an experiment, a BSS was set up so that the incident light of a neon lamp with a circular spot from an input fiber was transformed into an elliptical spot coupled into a slit of a spectrometer without a change of divergence. Spectral measurement results demonstrate that the throughput of the dispersive spectrometer was doubled without loss of spectral resolution. The BSS can be combined with the existing dispersive spectrometer to improve the luminous flux and signal-to-noise ratio.

High efficiency, diode pumped Nd:YAG ceramics slab laser with 230 W continuous-wave output power

Diode pumped zig-zag slab lasers are widely adopted for continuous-wave high power or pulsed high energy applications. Recently [J. Eur. Opt. Soc.-Rapid 6, 11041 (2011)] we started to investigate a new thin slab format in which pumping radiation input is obtained through the thin lateral faces (edge pumping) and the beam propagation takes place bouncing on these same lateral faces ("edge zig-zag"). We report on the optimized operation of a ceramic Nd:YAG laser, based on this geometry, extracting 230 W at a 43% output power to diode power conversion efficiency. Thorough investigation of the thermal lens effect allows us to analyze the optical cavity and thus to define the main aspects limiting the present laser configuration.

Bright diode laser light source

A simplified multiwavelength prototype of an axially symmetric diode laser device based on stacks made of single emitters has been made, and the performance of the device has been demonstrated experimentally. The results verify that kilowatt-level light power can be focused into a circular spot with a 1/e2 diameter of 360 microm, a focal length of 100 mm, and a numerical aperture of 0.24, thus producing an average power density in excess of 10 kW/mm2 and a brightness of 6x10(10) W m-2 sr-1. The experiments also predict that it will be possible to increase these values to more than 60 kW/mm2 and 3x10(11) W m-2 sr-1.

Compact scalable diode-pumped Nd:YAG ceramic slab laser

We describe our preliminary studies of the use of neodymium-doped slab-shaped ceramic YAG media in the construction of compact, rugged, high-power diode-pumped solid-state lasers. A maximum extraction of more than 160 W at a 20% slope efficiency level, with a narrow transverse direction beam-parameter product of the order of 4 mm mrad(-1) is experimentally obtained from an extremely simple and compact (overall dimensions 160 mm x 100 mm x 60 mm) laser head in a quasi-continuous-wave regime. Experimental data together with finite-elements method simulations indicate that power extraction can be scaled up at least to 900 W cw with this laser head geometry.
