Treatment of polarization in laser remote sensing of ocean water

Enhancing underwater optical imaging by using a low-pass polarization filter

Object identification in highly turbid optical media depends mainly on the quality of collected images. Underwater images acquired in a turbid environment are generally of very poor quality. Attenuation and backscattering of light by water, by materials dissolved in the water, and by particulate material are the main causes of the degradation of underwater images. It is therefore essential to improve the quality of such images to facilitate object identification. The focus of this paper is to report the principle and validation of a fast and effective method of improving the quality of underwater images. On the one hand, this method uses a polarimetric imaging optical system to reduce the effect of diffusion on the image acquisition. On the other hand, it is based on an optimized version of the dark channel prior (DCP) method that has received a great deal of attention for image dehazing. Results derived from images obtained in a controlled laboratory water tank environment with different turbidity conditions and images from tests using the proposed method at sea demonstrate an ability to significantly improve visibility and reduce runtime by a factor of about 50 for a 4K image when compared to conventional DCP methods.

Exploring underwater target detection by imaging polarimetry and correlation techniques

Underwater target detection is investigated by combining active polarization imaging and optical correlation-based approaches. Experiments were conducted in a glass tank filled with tap water with diluted milk or seawater and containing targets of arbitrary polarimetric responses. We found that target estimation obtained by imaging with two orthogonal polarization states always improves detection performances when correlation is used as detection criterion. This experimental study illustrates the potential of polarization imaging for underwater target detection and opens interesting perspectives for the development of underwater imaging systems.

Mueller matrix measurements of algae with different shape and size distributions

The full Mueller matrix was measured to obtain the polarization state of the scattered light for a variety of algae with different shapes, wall compositions, sizes, and refractive indices. The experimental setup was a multiple laser Mueller matrix ellipsometer, by which measurements were performed for scattering angles from 16° to 160° sampled at every second degree for wavelengths of 473 nm and 532 nm. Previously, the polarization of light scattered from microalgae was investigated only for a few species, and the Mueller matrix was found to have little variation between the species. In our work a total of 11 algal species were investigated, representing diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophorids, green algae, and a cryptophyte. The selection of species was made to obtain high variability in shape, size, cell wall, and refractive index. As in previous investigations, very small variations were found between species for most of the Mueller matrix elements, but noticeable variations were found for M(11), (M(12)+M(21))/2 and (M(33)+M(44))/2.

Investigation of the effect of scattering agent and scattering albedo on modulated light propagation in water

A recent paper described experiments completed to study the effect of scattering on the propagation of modulated light in laboratory tank water [Appl. Opt.48, 2607 (2009)APOPAI0003-693510.1364/AO.48.002607]. Those measurements were limited to a specific scattering agent (Maalox antacid) with a fixed scattering albedo (0.95). The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of different scattering agents and scattering albedos on modulated light propagation in water. The results show that the scattering albedo affects the number of attenuation lengths that the modulated optical signal propagates without distortion, while the type of scattering agent affects the degree to which the modulation is distorted with increasing attenuation length.

Backscatter suppression for underwater modulating retroreflector links using polarization discrimination

Free space optical links underwater have the potential to enable short range (<100 m) high-bandwidth (megabits per second) data links that have a low probability of detection and interception. The use of a retroreflecting free space optical link in water has the added advantage of allowing much of the weight and power burden of the link to remain at one end. While modulating retroreflectors have been successfully implemented in above-water links, the underwater environment introduces new challenges. The focus of this paper is to address these challenges and to investigate techniques for minimizing their effect on the link performance.

Contribution of water-leaving radiances to multiangle, multispectral polarimetric observations over the open ocean: bio-optical model results for case 1 waters

Multiangle, multispectral photopolarimetry of atmosphere-ocean systems provides the fullest set of remote sensing information possible on the scattering properties of aerosols and on the color of the ocean. Recent studies have shown that inverting such data allows for the potential of separating the retrieval of aerosol properties from ocean color monitoring in the visible part of the spectrum. However, the data in these studies were limited to those principal plane observations where the polarization of water-leaving radiances could be ignored. Examining similar potentials for off-principal plane observations requires the ability to assess realistic variations in both the reflectance for and bidirectionality of polarized water-leaving radiances for such viewing geometries. We provide hydrosol models for use in underwater light scattering computations to study such variations. The model consists of two components whose refractive indices resemble those of detritus-minerallike and planktonlike particles, whose size distributions are constrained by underwater light linear polarization signatures, and whose mixing ratios change as a function of particulate backscattering efficiency. Multiple scattering computations show that these models are capable of reproducing realistic underwater light albedos for wavelengths ranging from 400 to 600 nm, and for chlorophyll a concentrations ranging from 0.03 to 3.0 mg/m(3). Numerical results for spaceborne observations of the reflectance for total and polarized water-leaving radiances are provided as a function of polar angles, and the change in these reflectances with wavelength, chlorophyll a concentration, and hydrosol model are discussed in detail for case 1 (open ocean) waters.

Off-diagonal Mueller matrix elements in backscattering from highly diffusive media

Measurements of a reduced Mueller matrix in backscattering from highly diffusive, dielectric samples are reported as a function of the angle of incidence. It was found that the off-diagonal terms depend greatly on the angle of incidence, increasing to a maximum near grazing incidence. We show that, despite a significant scattering originating in the bulk of such diffusive media, the nontrivial behavior of the off-diagonal Muller matrix is primarily due to surface scattering phenomena. The experimental data can be simply explained by assuming a random orientation of small particles and considering only double scattering in the plane of the surface.

Airborne polarized lidar detection of scattering layers in the ocean

A polarized lidar technique based on measurements of waveforms of the two orthogonal-polarized components of the backscattered light pulse is proposed to retrieve vertical profiles of the seawater scattering coefficient. The physical rationale for the polarized technique is that depolarization of backscattered light originating from a linearly polarized laser beam is caused largely by multiple small-angle scattering from particulate matter in seawater. The magnitude of the small-angle scattering is determined by the scattering coefficient. Therefore information on the vertical distribution of the scattering coefficient can be derived potentially from measurements of the time-depth dependence of depolarization in the backscattered laser pulse. The polarized technique was verified by field measurements conducted in the Middle Atlantic Bight of the western North Atlantic Ocean that were supported by in situ measurements of the beam attenuation coefficient. The airborne polarized lidar measured the time-depth dependence of the backscattered laser pulse in two orthogonal-polarized components. Vertical profiles of the scattering coefficient retrieved from the time-depth depolarization of the backscattered laser pulse were compared with measured profiles of the beam attenuation coefficient. The comparison showed that retrieved profiles of the scattering coefficient clearly reproduce the main features of the measured profiles of the beam attenuation coefficient. Underwater scattering layers were detected at depths of 20-25 m in turbid coastal waters. The improvement in dynamic range afforded by the polarized lidar technique offers a strong potential benefit for airborne lidar bathymetric applications.
