Temperature self-compensation strain sensor based on cascaded concave-lens-like long-period fiber gratings

Solid rocket motor propellant health monitoring based on oxide-doped curved long-period fiber grating

A kind of curved long-period fiber grating(CLPFG) engraved by CO2 laser based on oxide-doped fiber was designed to monitor the structural integrity of propellant. The mechanical damage characteristics of the propellant were analyzed. The sensor model is constructed and the refractive index modulation characteristics of the CLPFG are analyzed. The strain coupling characteristics and the strain transfer efficiency of the interface between the CLPFG and the propellant are clarified. Propellant modules with implanted CLPFG were fabricated. The novel grating sensor has been effectively coated and structurally packaged. Conducted experiments on strain and temperature of propellant modules. The large strain measurement of propellant from 0 με to 24000 με is realized. Solved the thorny problem of large strain measurement for propellants. In addition, the temperature discrimination measurement in the temperature range of 30 ℃ to 250 ℃ can be realized. Sensor exhibit extremely high stability characteristics and has good compatibility with propellants. The sensor implantation and extraction structure has been designed to improve the survival rate of the sensor inside the solid rocket motors (SRM). Sensors can accurately measure the mechanical and thermal state parameters of propellants, providing effective data support for the health management of SRM.

Temperature-insensitive curvature sensor based on Bragg gratings written in strongly coupled multicore fiber

A novel temperature-insensitive optical curvature sensor has been proposed and demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by inscribing fiber Bragg gratings with short lengths into a piece of strongly coupled multicore fiber (SCMCF) and spliced to the conventional single-mode fiber. Due to the two supermodes being supported by the SCMCF, two resonance peaks, along with a deep notch between them, were observed in the reflection spectrum. The experimental results show that the depth of the notch changes with the curvature with a sensitivity up to 15.9dB/m^-1 in a lower curvature range. Besides, thanks to the unique property of the proposed sensor, the notch depth barely changes with temperature. Based on the intensity demodulation of the notch depth, the temperature-insensitive curvature sensor is achieved with the cross sensitivity between the temperature, and the curvature is as low as 0.001m^-1/^∘C.

Spectral Characteristics of Square-Wave-Modulated Type II Long-Period Fiber Gratings Inscribed by a Femtosecond Laser

We study here the spectral characteristics of square-wave-modulated type II long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) inscribed by a femtosecond laser. Both theoretical and experimental results indicate that higher-order harmonics refractive index (RI) modulation commonly exists together with the fundamental harmonic RI modulation in such LPFGs, and the duty cycle of a square wave has a great influence on the number and amplitudes of higher-order harmonics. A linear increase in the duty cycle in a series of square wave pulses will induce another LPFG with a minor difference in periods, which is useful for expanding the bandwidth of LPFGs. We also propose a method to reduce insertion loss by fabricating type II LPFGs without higher-order harmonic resonances. This work intensifies our comprehension of type II fiber gratings with which novel optical fiber sensors can be fabricated.
