Integrated Photonics on Glass: A Review of the Ion-Exchange Technology Achievements

Ion-exchange on glass is one of the major technological platforms that are available to manufacture low-cost, high performance Planar Lightwave Circuits (PLC). In this paper, the principle of ion-exchanged waveguide realization is presented. Then a review of the main achievements observed over the last 30 years will be given. The focus is first made on devices for telecommunications (passive and active ones) before the application of ion-exchanged waveguides to sensors is addressed.

Towards a photonic mid-infrared nulling interferometer in chalcogenide glass

Nulling interferometry enables astronomers to advance beyond the resolving power of ground-based telescopes with the goal of directly detecting exo-planets. By diminishing the overwhelming emission of the host star through destructive interference, radiation from young companions can be observed. The atmospheric transmission window centered around 4 μm wavelength is of particular interest because it has a favorable contrast between star and planet as well as a reduced atmospheric disturbance. For robustness and high stability, it is desirable to employ integrated devices based on optical waveguide technology. Their development is hindered at this wavelength range due to the lack of suitable host materials and compatible fabrication techniques to create low-loss photonic devices. This paper details our work on femtosecond laser direct-written optical waveguides and key components for an on-chip nulling interferometer inside gallium lanthanum sulphur glass. By combining cumulative heating fabrication with the multiscan technique, single-mode optical waveguides with propagation losses as low as 0.22 ± 0.02 dB/cm at 4 μm and polarization-dependent losses of < 0.1 dB/cm were realized. Furthermore, S-bends with negligible bending loss and broadband Y-splitters with 50/50 power division across a 600 nm wavelength window (3.6 - 4.2 μm) and low losses of < 0.5 dB are demonstrated. Directional couplers with an equal splitting ratio complement these main building blocks to create a future compact nulling interferometer with a total projected intrinsic loss of < 1 dB, a value that is sufficient to perform future on-sky experiments in relatively short observation runs on ground-based telescopes.

Midinfrared broadband achromatic astronomical beam combiner for nulling interferometry

Integrated optic beam combiners offer many advantages over conventional bulk optic implementations for astronomical imaging. To our knowledge, integrated optic beam combiners have only been demonstrated at operating wavelengths below 4 μm. Operation in the midinfrared wavelength region, however, is highly desirable. In this paper, a theoretical design technique based on three coupled waveguides is developed to achieve fully achromatic, broadband, polarization-insensitive, lossless beam combining. This design may make it possible to achieve the very deep broadband nulls needed for exoplanet searching.

Performance of astronomical beam combiner prototypes fabricated by hybrid sol-gel technology

Integrated optics coaxial two, three and four telescope beam combiners have been fabricated by hybrid sol-gel technology for astronomical applications. Temporal and spectral analyses of the output interferometric signal have been performed, and their results are in mutual good agreement. The results of the characterization method employed are cross-checked using contrast measurements obtained independently, demonstrating that the chromatic differential dispersion is the main contributer to contrast reduction. The mean visibility of the fabricated devices is always higher than 95 %, obtained using a source with spectral bandwidth of 50 nm. These results show the capability of hybrid sol-gel technology for fast prototyping of complex chip designs used in astronomical applications.

An infrared integrated optic astronomical beam combiner for stellar interferometry at 3-4 microm

Integrated-optic, astronomical, two-beam and three-beam, interferometric combiners have been designed and fabricated for operation in the L band (3 microm--4 microm) for the first time. The devices have been realized in titanium-indiffused, x-cut lithium niobate substrates, and on-chip electro-optic fringe scanning has been demonstrated. White light fringes were produced in the laboratory using the two-beam combiner integrated with an on-chip Y-splitter.

Hybrid sol-gel planar optics for astronomy

Hybrid sol-gel planar optics devices for astronomy are produced for the first time. This material system can operate from the visible (0.5 microm) up to the edge of astronomical J-band (1.4 microm). The design, fabrication and characterization results of a coaxial three beam combiner are given as an example. Fringe contrasts above 94% are obtained with a source with spectral bandwidth of 50 nm. These results demonstrate that hybrid sol-gel technology can produce devices with high quality, opening the possibility of rapid prototyping of new designs and concepts for astronomical applications.

All-guided stellar interferometer with an integrated optics recombiner

We report laboratory tests of an all-guided stellar interferometer used for optical aperture synthesis. In anticipation of use of the interferometer in space missions, this research is focused especially on compactness of the recombining device. The coherent transport and delay lines are implemented with polarization-maintaining fiber. Beam recombination is achieved by means of an integrated optics component. This two-arm interferometer operates at 670-nm mean wavelength and allows for a 24-cm correction for the differential air path.
