Passively Q-Switched Diode-Pumped Continuous-Wave Nd:YAG-Cr(4+):YAG Laser with High Peak Power and High Pulse Energy

Diode-pumped 1 kW Q-switched Nd:YAG rod laser with high peak power and high beam quality

We have demonstrated high-peak-power generation at 1 kW average power by applying an acousto-optic Q switch to a quasi-cw diode-pumped Nd:YAG master oscillator power amplifier. We achieved a maximum peak power of 2.3 MW by driving the Q switch in burst mode. The average repetition rate was 6 kHz. The corresponding beam quality was M2 = 9.

Broadband saturable absorber with cobalt-doped tellurite glasses

A robust solid-state saturable absorber was developed with cobalt-ion-doped tellurite glasses that has a broad saturable-absorption band in the near-infrared. A nonlinear optical absorber was measured by the Z-scan technique. Numerically fitting the Z-scan experimental data yields excited-state absorption cross sections at a 1064-nm laser wavelength of sigma(es) = 1.45 x 10(-20) and sigma(es) = 1.15 x 10(-20) cm2 for 1.0- and 2.5-at. % Co2+-doped glasses, respectively.

Output power and polarization characteristics for a diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG rod laser with a diffusive optical pump cavity

We fabricated and analyzed the output power and polarization characteristics of an efficient diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG rod laser with a diffusive optical cavity. The resonator stability conditions are analyzed graphically in the symmetric and asymmetric configurations for a plane-parallel resonator. On the basis of an analysis of the stability condition and mode size for the r and theta polarizations, we clarify how the stable laser operation is possible for various resonator configurations. In particular, we show that the critical stability region of around g1*g2* = 0 provides a stable resonator in the symmetric resonator, even with a slight asymmetry. Experimentally, the output power and polarization characteristics are confirmed in association with the resonator stability condition.

Saturation Characteristics of Cr(4)+:YAG Crystals and Dye Films for Passive Q Switches

Measurements of the saturated transmission and the undepleted ground-state population density of both Cr(4+):YAG crystals and dye films as saturable absorbers have been experimentally attempted to understand the additional unsaturated losses in a high Q state. The saturated transmission of a saturable absorber is less than its maximum at a high saturation fluence because of the undepleted ground-state population density. Higher saturated transmission and lower undepleted ground-state population density have been observed for Cr(4+):YAG crystals than have been observed for dye films at high optical densities.
