Magnetically tunable metasurface comprising InAs and InSb pixels for absorbing terahertz radiation

Metasurface absorber with ultra-thin thickness designed for a terahertz focal plane array detector

Terahertz (THz) refers to electromagnetic waves with frequency from 0.1 to 10 THz, which lies between millimeter waves and infrared light. This paper proposes an ultra-thin metasurface absorber which is perfectly suited to be the signal coupling part of terahertz focal plane array (FPA) detector. The absorptance of the proposed metasurface is higher than 80% from 4.46 to 5.76 THz (25.4%) while the thickness is merely 1.12 µm (0.018 λ). Since the metasurface absorber will be applied to terahertz FPA detector which requires planar array formation, it is divided into meta-atoms. Each meta-atom consists of the same unit cell layout, and air gaps are introduced between adjacent meta-atoms to enhance the thermal isolation, which is crucial for FPA detector to obtain desired imaging results. Due to the symmetrical layout of meta-atoms, absorptance keeps stable for different polarized waves, moreover, good absorptance could also be achieved for incidence angles range of ± 30 °. Spectral measurements show good agreement with the simulation. As a result, features of ultra-thin thickness, polarization insensitivity, and high absorptance make the proposed metasurface absorber well suited to highly efficient coupling of terahertz signals in FPA detector.

Piston-Type Optical Modulator for Dynamic Thermal Radiation Tuning Applications

This study introduces a movable piston-like structure that provides a simple and cost-effective avenue for dynamically tuning thermal radiation. This structure leverages two materials with dissimilar optical responses-graphite and aluminum-to modulate from a state of high reflectance to a state of high absorptance. A cavity is created in the graphite to house an aluminum cylinder, which is displaced to actuate the device. In its raised state, the large aluminum surface area promotes a highly reflective response, while in its lowered state, the expanded graphite surface area and blackbody cavity-like interactions significantly enhance absorptance. By optimizing the area ratio, reflectance tunability of over 30% is achieved for nearly the entire ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelength regions. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis postulates wavelength-dependent effectivenesses as high as 0.70 for this method, indicating that tunabilities approaching 70% can be achieved by exploiting near-ideal absorbers and reflectors. The analog nature of this control method allows for an infinitely variable optical response between the upper and lower bounds of the device. These valuable characteristics would enable this material structure to serve practical applications, such as reducing cost and energy requirements for environmental temperature management operations.

Design and mathematical analysis of a metasurface-based THz bandpass filter with an equivalent circuit model

This paper presents successive studies of single-, double-, and triple-layered metasurface-based bandpass filters along with their equivalent circuit modeling and mathematical analyses. A triple-layered bandpass filter operating in the THz region is reported exhibiting flattop passband response while maintaining transmission of more than 95% over the entire passband starting from the design of a single-layered bandpass filter configuration. A stepwise mathematical analysis is carried out for the single-layered structure and compared with the simulation data, where the two results have been found in good agreement. Thereafter, the study is extended for double- and triple-layer bandpass filters. The triple-layered structure offers a very steep transition between passband and stopband with noise-free background, and thereby offers a potential candidate for 6G communication.
