Frequency-Shifted Optical Feedback Measurement Technologies Using a Solid-State Microchip Laser

Since its first application toward displacement measurements in the early-1960s, laser feedback interferometry has become a fast-developing precision measurement modality with many kinds of lasers. By employing the frequency-shifted optical feedback, microchip laser feedback interferometry has been widely researched due to its advantages of high sensitivity, simple structure, and easy alignment. More recently, the laser confocal feedback tomography has been proposed, which combines the high sensitivity of laser frequency-shifted feedback effect and the axial positioning ability of confocal microscopy. In this paper, the principles of a laser frequency-shifted optical feedback interferometer and laser confocal feedback tomography are briefly introduced. Then we describe their applications in various kinds of metrology regarding displacement measurement, vibration measurement, physical quantities measurement, imaging, profilometry, microstructure measurement, and so on. Finally, the existing challenges and promising future directions are discussed.

Displacement measurement using a laser feedback grating interferometer

A novel laser feedback grating interferometer (LFGI) with a phase-generated carrier demodulation technique is proposed in this paper. Laser feedback grating interference occurs when light emitted from a laser is diffracted by the double-diffraction system and re-enters the laser active cavity, thus generating a modulation of the lasing field. In order to improve the displacement measurement resolution, phase modulation is introduced by an electro-optic modulator in the external cavity of the LFGI. Detection of the displacement can be easily achieved by the time-domain orthogonal demodulation, which does not involve any complicated calculation and is insensitive to the sampling error. Experimental results show that the proposed system has a general nanometer-level resolution. It provides a potential displacement sensor with high resolution, simple mechanical structure, and good reliability.

Note: High-performance HeNe laser feedback interferometer with birefringence feedback cavity scanned by piezoelectric transducer

We demonstrate a high-performance HeNe laser feedback interferometer (HLFI) based on a birefringence feedback cavity scanned by a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The PZT scanning technique leads to a significant improvement in the HLFI's anti-jamming capability. The null drift under general laboratory conditions is approximately ±32 nm, corresponding to ±2 pulses. The phase difference between the two measurement signals does not vary when the feedback cavity length changes. This ensures a large measurement range for the HLFI. The HLFI presented here features a large measurement range (>1 m), nanometer-scale resolution (15.82 nm), a compact configuration, and low cost.

Stability near threshold in a semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback: a bifurcation analysis of the Lang-Kobayashi equations

Through the use of analytical and numerical techniques, we investigate the interaction between the trivial off-state and the continuous-wave (CW) operation of a semiconductor laser subject to conventional optical feedback. More specifically, using numerical continuation tools, the stability and bifurcations of the CW states, or external-cavity modes (ECMs), are analyzed in dependence on the parameters of feedback phase, feedback strength, pump current, and the linewidth enhancement factor. In this way, curves of codimension-one Hopf bifurcations are shown to destabilize the off-state and lead to stable ECM operation. Moreover, self-intersections of these Hopf curves in codimension-two Hopf-Hopf bifurcation points are seen to give rise to curves of codimension-one torus bifurcations (Hopf bifurcations of the ECMs), and degenerate-Hopf points to the birth of saddle-node bifurcations of the ECMs, as parameters are varied. These codimension-two points are shown to come together at a codimension-three degenerate Hopf-Hopf point (a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation of the ECMs): a limiting point for which a stable off-state can exist.
