Light scattering and absorption by fractal-like carbonaceous chain aggregates: comparison of theories and experiment

Optical properties of chain-like atmospheric aerosol particles

Using the generalized multiparticle Mie-solution method, this study examines the optical properties of chain-like particles under different atmospheric conditions and various arrangements. The structural composition of aerosols exhibits a more pronounced impact on their extinction and absorption cross sections when the incident wavelength is below 600 nm, whereas significant changes are observed in backscattering cross sections for incident wavelengths above 600 nm. As the orientation angle between the incident wave and particle chain increases, the extinction cross sections and absorption cross sections exhibit varying degrees of decline. Furthermore, marine atmospheric aerosol chains demonstrate similar extinction cross sections to those of polluted atmospheric aerosols, and their absorption cross sections closely resemble those of clean atmospheric aerosols. In addition, for a particle chain of fixed length, the greater the disparity in particle sizes within the chain, the larger the difference between the backscattering cross section and that of the chains with equal particle sizes. This research provides theoretical support for assessing the climate effects of aerosols and inverting aerosol properties by LiDAR data.

The Measurement of Atmospheric Black Carbon: A Review

Black Carbon (BC), the second-largest contributor to global warming, has detrimental effects on human health and the environment. However, the accurate quantification of BC poses a significant challenge, impeding the comprehensive assessment of its impacts. Therefore, this paper aims to critically review three quantitative methods for measuring BC: Thermal Optical Analysis (TOA), the Optical Method, and Laser-Induced Incandescence (LII). The determination principles, available commercial instruments, sources of deviation, and correction approaches associated with these techniques are systematically discussed. By synthesizing and comparing the quantitative results reported in previous studies, this paper aims to elucidate the underlying relationships and fundamental disparities among Elemental Carbon (EC), Equivalent Black Carbon (eBC), and Refractory Black Carbon (rBC). Finally, based on the current advancements in BC quantification, recommendations are proposed to guide future research directions.

Retrieval of fractal dimension and size distribution of non-compact soot aggregates from relative intensities of multi-wavelength angular-resolved light scattering

A new technique is developed to retrieve the fractal dimension and size distribution of soot aggregates simultaneously from the relative intensities of multi-wavelength angular-resolved light scattering. Compared with other techniques, the main advantage of this method is its independence of knowing complex refractive index, number density of aggregate, fractal prefactor and primary particle diameter. The forward light scattering procedure of soot aggregate is described by Rayleigh-Debye-Gans polydisperse fractal aggregate (RDG-PFA) scattering theory, and the retrieval process is performed by using the covariance matrix adaption-evolution strategy algorithm (CMA-ES). Three different measurement models, i.e. absolute scattering and transmittance, absolute scattering, relative scattering (RS), are investigated in present research. Numerical experiments have been performed to test the feasibility of the CMA-ES algorithm. Combined with the multi-wavelength RDG-PFA strategy, the retrieval accuracy of soot aggregate size distribution is proved to be more effectively by using the RS model. Satisfactory results under 10% Gaussian measurement noise have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed method.

Single Parameter for Predicting the Morphology of Atmospheric Black Carbon

Black carbon (BC) from fuel combustion is an effective light absorber that contributes significantly to direct climate forcing. The forcing is altered when BC combines with other substances, which modify its mixing state and morphology, making the evaluation of its atmospheric lifetime and climate impact a challenge. To elucidate the associated mechanisms, we exposed BC aerosol to supersaturated vapors of different chemicals to form thin coatings and measured the coating mass required to induce the restructuring of BC aggregates. We found that studied chemicals fall into two distinct groups based on a single dimensionless parameter, χ, which depends on the diameter of BC monomer spheres and the coating material properties, including vapor supersaturation, molar volume, and surface tension. We show that when χ is small (low-volatility chemicals), the highly supersaturated vapor condenses uniformly over aggregates, including convex monomers and concave junctions in between monomers, but when χ is large (intermediate-volatility chemicals), junctions become preferred. The aggregates undergo prompt restructuring when condensation in the junctions dominates over condensation on monomer spheres. For a given monomer diameter, the coating distribution is mostly controlled by vapor supersaturation. The χ factor can be incorporated straightforwardly into atmospheric models to improve simulations of BC aging.

Empirical relationships between optical properties and equivalent diameters of fractal soot aggregates at 550 nm wavelength

Soot aggregates (SAs)-fractal clusters of small, spherical carbonaceous monomers-modulate the incoming visible solar radiation and contribute significantly to climate forcing. Experimentalists and climate modelers typically assume a spherical morphology for SAs when computing their optical properties, causing significant errors. Here, we calculate the optical properties of freshly-generated (fractal dimension Df = 1.8) and aged (Df = 2.6) SAs at 550 nm wavelength using the numerically-exact superposition T-Matrix method. These properties were expressed as functions of equivalent aerosol diameters as measured by contemporary aerosol instruments. This work improves upon previous efforts wherein SA optical properties were computed as a function of monomer number, rendering them unusable in practical applications. Future research will address the sensitivity of variation in refractive index, fractal prefactor, and monomer overlap of SAs on the reported empirical relationships.

Comparative validation of single-shot optical techniques for laparoscopic 3-D surface reconstruction

Intra-operative imaging techniques for obtaining the shape and morphology of soft-tissue surfaces in vivo are a key enabling technology for advanced surgical systems. Different optical techniques for 3-D surface reconstruction in laparoscopy have been proposed, however, so far no quantitative and comparative validation has been performed. Furthermore, robustness of the methods to clinically important factors like smoke or bleeding has not yet been assessed. To address these issues, we have formed a joint international initiative with the aim of validating different state-of-the-art passive and active reconstruction methods in a comparative manner. In this comprehensive in vitro study, we investigated reconstruction accuracy using different organs with various shape and texture and also tested reconstruction robustness with respect to a number of factors like the pose of the endoscope as well as the amount of blood or smoke present in the scene. The study suggests complementary advantages of the different techniques with respect to accuracy, robustness, point density, hardware complexity and computation time. While reconstruction accuracy under ideal conditions was generally high, robustness is a remaining issue to be addressed. Future work should include sensor fusion and in vivo validation studies in a specific clinical context. To trigger further research in surface reconstruction, stereoscopic data of the study will be made publically available at www.open-CAS.com upon publication of the paper.

Soot superaggregates from flaming wildfires and their direct radiative forcing

Wildfires contribute significantly to global soot emissions, yet their aerosol formation mechanisms and resulting particle properties are poorly understood and parameterized in climate models. The conventional view holds that soot is formed via the cluster-dilute aggregation mechanism in wildfires and emitted as aggregates with fractal dimension D_f ≈ 1.8 mobility diameter D_m ≤ 1 μm, and aerodynamic diameter D_a ≤ 300 nm. Here we report the ubiquitous presence of soot superaggregates (SAs) in the outflow from a major wildfire in India. SAs are porous, low-density aggregates of cluster-dilute aggregates with characteristic D_f ≈ 2.6, D_m > 1 μm, and D_a ≤ 300 nm that form via the cluster-dense aggregation mechanism. We present additional observations of soot SAs in wildfire smoke-laden air masses over Northern California, New Mexico, and Mexico City. We estimate that SAs contribute, per unit optical depth, up to 35% less atmospheric warming than freshly-emitted (D_f ≈ 1.8) aggregates, and ≈90% more warming than the volume-equivalent spherical soot particles simulated in climate models.

Characterizing elemental, equivalent black, and refractory black carbon aerosol particles: a review of techniques, their limitations and uncertainties

Elemental-, equivalent black- and refractory black-carbon are terms that have been defined in order to dissect the more general term, black carbon, into its component parts related to its specific chemical and optical properties and its impact on climate and health. Recent publications have attempted to clarify the meaning of these terms with respect to their environmental impact, particularly on climate. Here, we focus on the measurement aspects, reviewing the most commonly implemented techniques for the direct and indirect derivation of black carbon properties, their strengths, limitations, and uncertainties, and provide a non-exhaustive bibliography where the reader can find more detailed information. This review paper is designed as a guide for those wishing to learn about the current state of black carbon measurement instrumentation, how calibration is carried out, when one instrument may have the advantage over another, and where new techniques are needed to fill important knowledge gaps.

Pinhole-type two-dimensional ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering on the micrometer scale

A pinhole-type two-dimensional ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering set-up at a so-called medium-length beamline at SPring-8 is reported. A long sample-to-detector distance, 160.5 m, can be used at this beamline and a small-angle resolution of 0.25 µm(-1) was thereby achieved at an X-ray energy of 8 keV.

Technique to improve the accuracy of the retrieval of aerosol size-distribution

A technique to improve the accuracy of the retrieval of aerosol size-distribution is introduced. This technique includes a wavelength-selecting method and a "function model." The wavelength-selecting method is used to select the suitable wavelengths for the retrieval of aerosol size-distribution, and the function model is used to express the aerosol size-distributions with a fewer parameters. By using this technique, the accuracy of the retrieval of aerosol size-distribution can be improved.

Low fractal dimension cluster-dilute soot aggregates from a premixed flame

Using a novel morphology segregation technique, we observed minority populations ( approximately 3%) of submicron-sized, cluster-dilute fractal-like aggregates, formed in the soot-formation window (fuel-to-air equivalence ratio of 2.0-3.5) of a premixed flame, to have mass fractal dimensions between 1.2 and 1.51. Our observations disagree with previous observations of a universal mass fractal dimension of approximately 1.8 for fractal-like aerosol aggregates formed in the dilute-limit via three-dimensional diffusion-limited cluster aggregation processes. A hypothesis is presented to explain this observation. Subject to verification of this hypothesis, it may be possible to control the fractal dimension and associated properties of aggregates in the cluster-dilute limit through application of a static electric field during the aggregation process.
