Optimization of the dynamic wavefront control of a pulsed kilojoule/nanosecond-petawatt laser facility

Complex spatiotemporal coupling distortion pre-compensation with double-compressors for an ultra-intense femtosecond laser

In an ultra-intense femtosecond chirped-pulse amplification laser, the imperfect diffraction wave-fronts of the second and the third gratings of the compressor, where spatio-spectral coupling exists, could introduce a complex spatiotemporal coupling distortion (STCD) and degrade the pulsed beam in both near- and far-fields. Here, we propose a method of double-compressors for pre-compensation. By inserting a scaled down compressor (small compressor) with a deformable retro-reflection mirror into the beam-line, the frequency-dependent wave-front distortion, i.e., the complex STCD, could be removed. We simulate the results in two different ultra-intense femtosecond lasers with 80 and 400 nm bandwidths for comparison, and near ideal focused peak intensities could be obtained in both cases. Meanwhile, the influences of several miss-matching effects, which might appear in engineering, are also analyzed and discussed for applications.

Interferometric adaptive optics testbed for laser pointing, wave-front control and phasing

Implementing the capability to perform fast ignition experiments, as well as, radiography experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) places stringent requirements on the control of each of the beam's pointing, intra-beam phasing and overall wave-front quality. In this article experimental results are presented which were taken on an interferometric adaptive optics testbed that was designed and built to test the capabilities of such a system to control phasing, pointing and higher order beam aberrations. These measurements included quantification of the reduction in Strehl ratio incurred when using the MEMS device to correct for pointing errors in the system. The interferometric adaptive optics system achieved a Strehl ratio of 0.83 when correcting for a piston, tip/tilt error between two adjacent rectangular apertures, the geometry expected for the National ignition Facility. The interferometric adaptive optics system also achieved a Strehl ratio of 0.66 when used to correct for a phase plate aberration of similar magnitude as expected from simulations of the ARC beam line. All of these corrections included measuring both the upstream and downstream aberrations in the testbed and applying the sum of these two measurements in open-loop to the MEMS deformable mirror.

Quadriwave lateral shearing interferometry for quantitative phase microscopy of living cells

Phase imaging with a high-resolution wavefront sensor is considered. This is based on a quadriwave lateral shearing interferometer mounted on a non-modified transmission white-light microscope. The measurement technology is explained both in the scope of wave optics and geometrical optics in order to discuss its implementation on a conventional microscope. In particular we consider the effect of a non spatially coherent source on the phase-image signal-to-noise ratio. Precise measurements of the phase-shift introduced by microscopic beads or giant unilamellar vesicles validate the principle and show the accuracy of the methods. Diffraction limited images of living COS-7 cells are then presented, with a particular focus on the membrane and organelle dynamics.

Temporal wavefront stability of an ultrafast high-power laser beam

We measured the temporal dynamics of wavefront aberrations in a beam produced by a commercial ultrafast high-power laser with a research-prototype real-time Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. Measurements were performed at two different temporal rates for a 7 mm diameter. Results showed that changes in the wavefront aberrations were always lower than 1%. The main contribution to the total root-mean-square (RMS) wavefront error was due to the effects of low order aberrations (defocus and astigmatism), which persisted even after cavity realignment. The potential improvement in the beam quality after correction of the different aberration modes was also shown. Real-time measurements of laser aberrations while modifying cavity parameters might be a useful tool to improve the beam quality.
