Effects of typical liquid-crystal retarder errors on optimized Stokes polarimeters

Optimizing near-infrared polariscopic imaging for the living human eye

Hardware architectures and image interpretation can be simplified by partial polarimetry. Mueller matrix (MM) polarimetry allows the investigation of partial polarimeter designs for a given scientific task. In this work, we use MM measurements to solve for a fixed polarization illumination and analyzer state that maximize polariscopic image contrast of the human eye. The eye MM image acquisition takes place over 15 seconds which motivates the development of a partial polarimeter that has snapshot operation. Within the eye, the birefringent cornea produces spatially-varying patterns of retardance exceeding half of a wave with a fast-axis varying from linear, to circular, and elliptical states in between. Our closed-form polariscopic pairs are a general solution that maximizes contrast between two non-depolarizing pure retarder MMs. For these MMs, there is a family of polariscopic pairs that maximize contrast. This range of solutions creates an opportunity to use the distance from optimal as a criteria to adjust polarimetric hardware architecture. We demonstrate our optimization approach by performing both Mueller and polariscopic imaging of an in vivo human eye at 947 nm using a dual-rotating-retarder polarimeter. Polariscopic images are simulated from Mueller measurements of 19 other human subjects to test the robustness of this optimal solution.

Optimized configuration for liquid crystal Stokes polarimeters in the presence of fast-axis orientation errors

We present an optimal configuration for Stokes polarimeters based on liquid crystal variable retarders, with the minimum number of measurements. Due to the inherent variations of the director orientation of the liquid crystal molecules, we propose a configuration that minimizes the sensibility of the polarimeter to fast-axis variations. For the optimization we consider a scheme that maximizes the volume of a tetrahedron inscribed in the Poincare sphere, to address additive and Poisson noise, with one of the vertices invariant to changes in the axis positions. We provide numerical simulations, considering misalignment errors, to analyze the robustness of the configuration. The results show that the proposed configuration helps to maintain the volume enclosed by the tetrahedron with high tolerance to fast-axis orientation errors. The condition number will remain below 3.07 for common misalignment errors and below 1.88 for more controlled liquid crystals. This optimization will improve the performance of liquid crystals polarimeters, with a more robust configuration that also considers misalignment errors, beyond additive and Poisson noise.

Improved polarimetric analysis of human skin through stitching: advantages, limitations, and applications in dermatology

Polarimetry is a powerful tool for the analysis of the optical properties of materials and systems, such as human skin. However, in many polarimetric setups, the field of view is limited to a few square centimeters. In these cases, it is possible to resort to stitching techniques, which involve combining multiple Mueller matrix measurements obtained from different overlapping regions of the sample. In this paper, we propose a stitching technique for polarimetric data and discuss its advantages and limitations. We also describe the potential of image stitching for improving the accuracy and robustness ofin vivopolarimetry in the presence of random patient movement. We conducted our research using a diverse set of samples which included porcine skin, human skin from arms and fingers, cold cuts of chicken and gelatine, alongside synthetically created sample data. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique for the application in dermatology. Each additionalin vivomeasurement enhances the field of view by approximately one third, thereby considerably augmenting the total observation area. We show that stitching enables for the polarimetric assessment of large skin patches which is useful for the diagnosis of inflammatory skin diseases.

Optimization of polarization parameters for an LCVR polarization spectrometer under non-oversampling

The spectral polarization measurement can obtain not only the spectral information of the target but also its polarization information, which can improve the detection and identification of the measured target. In the polarization spectrometer based on a liquid crystal variable retarder (LCVR) and acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF), the LCVR is a core device for achieving fast and high-precision polarization detection. The AOTF is a new, to the best of our knowledge, filter device for spectral tuning. To reduce the sensitivity of an LCVR-based Stokes polarization spectrometer system to errors and Gaussian noise, and to maintain the advantage of fast electrical tuning of the system for spectral polarization detection, the phase retardation and azimuth angle of the polarization device LCVR is calculated and analyzed optimally under the minimum number of samples N=4 of the Stokes vector measurement method in this paper. The optimization algorithm considers the constraints, such as the number of types of LCVR phase retardation and the number of adjustments, and the azimuth and phase retardation to be optimized are searched for optimality step by step. The simulation results show that the number of adjustments of the phase retardation δ of LCVRs is only three times when four Stokes parameters are obtained. The LCVRs' number of species is four kinds (2×2). The condition number of the optimized measurement matrix is 1.742, which converges to the ideal condition number, the optimal azimuth angle (θ 1,θ 2) is (18.9°, 41.9°), and the optimal phase retardation δ is (179.9°, 156.6°, 0.4°, 46.3°). Its corresponding tetrahedral volume is closer to the ideal value. The optimized system is less sensitive to errors and Gaussian noise.
