Absorption and wavelength modulation spectroscopy of NO2 using a tunable, external cavity continuous wave quantum cascade laser

Long-wave infrared pulsed external-cavity QCL spectrometer using a hollow waveguide gas cell

A spectrometer built using an external cavity pulsed quantum cascade laser is described. The spectrometer has a tuning range from 10 - 13 µm (1,000 - 769 cm-1) and is designed to target volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which often exhibit water-free molecular absorption within the region. The spectrometer utilizes a hollow silica waveguide gas cell which has an internal volume of a few millilitres, a fast response time (∼1 s), and is advantageous when only low sample volumes, similar to the cell volume, are available. Propane is used as a test gas because it is easy to handle, and its spectral profile is comparable to VOCs of interest. Its absorption in the region is primarily within the ν21 band which spans from 10.55 - 11.16 µm (948 - 896 cm-1). Spectral measurements at a range of concentrations show good linearity and an Allan deviation of absorbance values recorded over a 100-minute period indicates a minimum detectable absorbance of 3.5×10-5 at an integration time of 75 s.

Sensitive Spectroscopy of Acetone Using a Widely Tunable External-Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser

We employed a single-mode, widely tunable (~300 cm⁻¹) external-cavity quantum cascade laser operating around 8 µm for broadband direct absorption spectroscopy and wavelength modulation spectroscopy where a modulation frequency of 50 kHz was employed with high modulation amplitudes of up to 10 GHz. Using a compact multipass cell, we measured the entire molecular absorption band of acetone at ~7.4 µm with a spectral resolution of ~1 cm⁻¹. In addition, to demonstrate the high modulation dynamic range of the laser, we performed direct absorption (DAS) and second harmonic wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS-2f) of the Q-branch peak of acetone molecular absorption band (HWHM ~10 GHz) near 1365 cm⁻¹. With WMS-2f, a minimum detection limit of 15 ppbv in less than 10 s is achieved, which yields a noise equivalent absorption sensitivity of 1.9 × 10⁻⁸ cm⁻¹ Hz^−1/2.

External cavity tunable quantum cascade lasers and their applications to trace gas monitoring

Since the first quantum cascade laser (QCL) was demonstrated approximately 16 years ago, we have witnessed an explosion of interesting developments in QCL technology and QCL-based trace gas sensors. QCLs operate in the mid-IR region (3-24 μm) and can directly access the rotational vibrational bands of most molecular species and, therefore, are ideally suited for trace gas detection with high specificity and sensitivity. These sensors have applications in a wide range of fields, including environmental monitoring, atmospheric chemistry, medical diagnostics, homeland security, detection of explosive compounds, and industrial process control, to name a few. Tunable external cavity (EC)-QCLs in particular offer narrow linewidths, wide ranges of tunability, and stable power outputs, which open up new possibilities for sensor development. These features allow for the simultaneous detection of multiple species and the study of large molecules, free radicals, ions, and reaction kinetics. In this article, we review the current status of EC-QCLs and sensor developments based on them and speculate on possible future developments.

Automated broad tuning of difference frequency sources for spectroscopic studies

Transmission spectroscopy over large spectral ranges (>100 cm(-1)) generally requires a reference measurement to be taken separately from the sample scan. The ratio of the two measurements (i.e., the transmittance) is therefore susceptible to baseline changes that occur between the recording of the two spectra. The origins of relatively strong baseline changes (≫1%) of a difference-frequency-generation-based laser spectrometer (tuning range 2900-3144 cm(-1), 150 μW average power) were investigated and a method for minimizing them by improving reproducibility and reducing measurement time is presented. The new method was tested for a gas mixture and the sensitivity for broad absorption features was determined as 5×10(-3) minimum measurable absorbance for a total scan duration of 70 min.

Enhancement of trace gas detection by integrating wavelength modulated spectra across multiple lines

We describe and demonstrate a technique that enhances the sensitivity of a spectrometer for trace gas detection by employing wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and integrating the absolute value of the recorded spectra across multiple lines of the species. The sensitivity is further enhanced by conducting WMS with large modulation depths. This technique is demonstrated using a continuously tunable external cavity CW quantum cascade laser to record the second harmonic wavelength modulated spectra of NO(2) across the peak of the R-branch from 1629.5 to 1633.9 cm(-1). By integrating the absolute value of the resulting spectra, the detection sensitivity of NO(2) is improved by a factor of 40 compared to the sensitivity achieved using single-line WMS with the same apparatus. By using this technique, we achieve a sensitivity of approximately 6 parts in 10(9) (ppb) using a short-path cell (a 1 m absorption cell with two passes).

Detection of benzene and toluene gases using a midinfrared continuous-wave external cavity quantum cascade laser at atmospheric pressure

We demonstrate the application of a commercially available widely tunable continuous-wave external cavity quantum cascade laser as a spectroscopic source for the simultaneous detection of multiple gases. We measured broad absorption features of benzene and toluene between 1012 and 1063 cm(-1) (9.88 and 9.41 microm) at atmospheric pressure using an astigmatic Herriott multipass cell. Our results show experimental detection limits of 0.26 and 0.41 ppm for benzene and toluene, respectively, with a 100 m path length for these two gases.

Enhanced sensitivity for the detection of trace gases using multiple line integrated absorption spectroscopy

We describe a technique that enhances the sensitivity of a spectrometer for trace gas detection employing an external cavity continuously tunable CW quantum cascade laser and integrating the absorption spectra across multiple lines of the species. We demonstrate the power of this method by continuously recording the absorption spectra of NO2 across the R branch from 1628.8 to 1634.5 cm(-1). By integrating the resulting spectra, the detection sensitivity of NO2 is improved by a factor of 15 compared to the sensitivity achieved using single line laser absorption spectroscopy with the same apparatus. This procedure offers much shorter data acquisition times for the real-time monitoring of trace gas species compared to adding repeated scans of the spectra to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
