Reconstruction of laser beam wavefronts based on mode analysis

General error analysis of matrix-operation-mode decomposition technique in few-mode fiber laser

The mode decomposition based on matrix operation (MDMO) is one of the fastest mode decomposition (MD) techniques, which is important to the few-mode fiber laser characterization and its applications. In this paper, the general error of the MDMO technique was analyzed, where different influencing factors, such as position deviation of the optical imaging system, coordinate deviation of the image acquisition system, aberrations, and mode distortion were considered. It is found that the MDMO technique based on far-field intensity distribution is less affected by optical imaging system position deviation, coordinate deviation of the image acquisition system, and mode distortion than those based on direct near-field decomposition. But far-field decomposition is more affected by aberration than those based on near-field decomposition. In particular, the numerical results show that the deviation of the coordinate axis direction is an important factor limiting the accuracy of MD. In addition, replacing the ideal eigenmode basis with a distorted eigenmode basis can effectively suppress the decrease in mode decomposition accuracy caused by fiber bending. Moreover, based on detailed numerical analysis results, fitting formulas for estimating the accuracy of the MDMO technique with imperfections are also provided, which provides a comprehensive method for evaluating the accuracy of the MDMO technique in practical engineering operations.

Reference-free quantitative microscopic imaging of coherent arbitrary vectorial light beams

Precise spatial characterization of vectorial beams is crucial for many advanced optical experiments, but challenging when wavefront and polarization features are involved together. Here we propose a reference-free method aimed at extracting the map of the complex-amplitude components of any coherent beam at an optical-microscopy resolution. Our method exploits recent advances in ptychographic imaging approaches. We emphasize its versatility by reconstructing successfully various experimental vectorial beams including polarization and phase vortices, the exit field of a multicore fiber and a speckle pattern.

Modal analysis of structured light with spatial light modulators: a practical tutorial

A quantitative analysis of optical fields is essential, particularly when the light is structured in some desired manner, or when there is perhaps an undesired structure that must be corrected for. A ubiquitous procedure in the optical community is that of optical mode projections-a modal analysis of light-for the unveiling of amplitude and phase information of a light field. When correctly performed, all the salient features of the field can be deduced with high fidelity, including its orbital angular momentum, vectorial properties, wavefront, and Poynting vector. Here, we present a practical tutorial on how to perform an efficient and effective optical modal decomposition, with emphasis on holographic approaches using spatial light modulators, highlighting the care required at each step of the process.

Adaptive phase correction of dynamic multimode beam based on modal decomposition

We propose and demonstrate a method for the adaptive phase correction of dynamic multimode fiber beams. The phase of incident beam is reconstructed in real-time based on the complete modal information, which obtained by using the modal decomposition of correlation filter method. For the proof of principle, both of the modal decomposition and the phase correction are implemented using the same computer-generated hologram, which was encoded into a phase-only spatial light modulator. We demonstrate the phase correction of dynamic multimode beam at a rate of 5 Hz and achieve a 1.73-fold improvement on the average power-in-the-bucket. The experimental results indicate the feasibility of the real-time phase correction for the large mode area fiber laser by adaptive optics.

High-quality tailored-edge cleaving using aberration-corrected Bessel-like beams

We report on the usage of ultrashort laser pulses in the form of aberration-corrected Bessel-like beams for laser cutting of glass with bevels. Our approach foresees inclining the material's entrance surface with respect to the processing optics. The detailed analysis of phase distortions caused by the beam transition through the tilted glass surface allows precompensating for occurring aberrations using digital holography. We verify theoretical considerations by means of pump-probe microscopy and present high-quality edges in nonstrengthened silicate glass.

LED-based visible light communication for color image and audio transmission utilizing orbital angular momentum superposition modes

Twisted light has recently gained enormous interest in communication systems ranging from fiber-optic to radio frequency regimes. Thus far, the light-emitting diode (LED) has not yet been exploited for orbital angular momentum (OAM) encoding to transmit data, which, however, could open up an opportunity towards a new model of secure indoor communication. Here, by multiplexing and demultiplexing red, green and blue (RGB) twisted beams derived from a white light emitting diode, we build a new visible light communication system with RGB colors serving as independent channels and with OAM superposition modes encoding the information. At the sender, by means of theta-modulation, we use a computer-controlled spatial light modulator to generate two-dimensional holographic gratings to encode a large alphabet with 16 different OAM superposition modes in each RGB channel. At the receiver, based on supervised machine learning, we develop a pattern recognition method to identify the characteristic mode patterns recorded by CCD cameras, and therefore, decoding the information. We succeed in demonstrating the transmission of color images and a piece of audio over a 6-meter indoor link with the fidelity over 96%.

Encoding information using Laguerre Gaussian modes over free space turbulence media

We experimentally demonstrate an efficient information transmission technique using Laguerre Gaussian (LG) modes. This technique is based on multiplexing and demultiplexing multiple LG modes with different azimuthal and radial components. At the reception, the initially sent modes encoding the information are extracted with high fidelity using a complete decomposition allowing to identify a particular mode from a set of modes within a unique iteration. Importantly, we investigate the effects of the atmospheric turbulence on the proposed communication system. We believe that the proposed technique is promising for high-bit-rate spatial division multiplexing in optical fiber and free space communication systems.

Ultrafast laser spatial beam shaping based on Zernike polynomials for surface processing

In femtosecond laser machining, spatial beam shaping can be achieved with wavefront modulators. The wavefront modulator displays a pre-calculated phase mask that modulates the laser wavefront to generate a target intensity distribution in the processing plane. Due to the non-perfect optical response of wavefront modulators, the experimental distribution may significantly differ from the target, especially for continuous shapes. We propose an alternative phase mask calculation method that can be adapted to the phase modulator optical performance. From an adjustable number of Zernike polynomials according to this performance, a least square fitting algorithm numerically determines their coefficients to obtain the desired wavefront modulation. We illustrate the technique with an optically addressed liquid-crystal light valve to produce continuous intensity distributions matching a desired ablation profile, without the need of a wavefront sensor. The projection of the experimental laser distribution shows a 5% RMS error compared to the calculated one. Ablation of steel is achieved following user-defined micro-dimples and micro-grooves targets on mold surfaces. The profiles of the microgrooves and the injected polycarbonate closely match the target (RMS below 4%).

All-digital wavefront sensing for structured light beams

We present a new all-digital technique to extract the wavefront of a structured light beam. Our method employs non-homogeneous polarization optics together with dynamic, digital holograms written to a spatial light modulator to measure the phase relationship between orthogonal polarization states in real-time, thereby accessing the wavefront information. Importantly, we show how this can be applied to measuring the wavefront of propagating light fields, over extended distances, without any moving components. We illustrate the versatility of the tool by measuring propagating optical vortices, Bessel, Airy and speckle fields. The comparison of the extracted and programmed wavefronts yields excellent agreement.
