Gauging diffraction patterns: field of view and bandwidth estimation in lensless holography

The purpose of this work is to provide a theoretically grounded assessment on the field of view and bandwidth of a lensless holographic setup. Indeed, while previous works have presented results with super-resolution and field-of-view extrapolation, there are no well-established rules to determine them. We show that the theoretical field of view can be large with a spatial-frequency bandwidth only limited by the wavelength, leading to an unthinkable number of degrees of freedom. To keep a realistic field of view and bandwidth, we propose several practical bounds based on a few setup properties, namely, the noise level and spatiotemporal coherence of the source.

Punching holes in light: recent progress in single-shot coded-aperture optical imaging

Single-shot coded-aperture optical imaging physically captures a code-aperture-modulated optical signal in one exposure and then recovers the scene via computational image reconstruction. Recent years have witnessed dazzling advances in various modalities in this hybrid imaging scheme in concomitant technical improvement and widespread applications in physical, chemical and biological sciences. This review comprehensively surveys state-of-the-art single-shot coded-aperture optical imaging. Based on the detected photon tags, this field is divided into six categories: planar imaging, depth imaging, light-field imaging, temporal imaging, spectral imaging, and polarization imaging. In each category, we start with a general description of the available techniques and design principles, then provide two representative examples of active-encoding and passive-encoding approaches, with a particular emphasis on their methodology and applications as well as their advantages and challenges. Finally, we envision prospects for further technical advancement in this field.

Comparative analysis of imaging configurations and objectives for Fourier microscopy

Fourier microscopy is becoming an increasingly important tool for the analysis of optical nanostructures and quantum emitters. However, achieving quantitative Fourier space measurements requires a thorough understanding of the impact of aberrations introduced by optical microscopes that have been optimized for conventional real-space imaging. Here we present a detailed framework for analyzing the performance of microscope objectives for several common Fourier imaging configurations. To this end, we model objectives from Nikon, Olympus, and Zeiss using parameters that were inferred from patent literature and confirmed, where possible, by physical disassembly. We then examine the aberrations most relevant to Fourier microscopy, including the alignment tolerances of apodization factors for different objective classes, the effect of magnification on the modulation transfer function, and vignetting-induced reductions of the effective numerical aperture for wide-field measurements. Based on this analysis, we identify an optimal objective class and imaging configuration for Fourier microscopy. In addition, the Zemax files for the objectives and setups used in this analysis have been made publicly available as a resource for future studies.

Improved layer-based method for rapid hologram generation and real-time interactive holographic display applications

Layer-based method has been proposed as an efficient approach to calculate holograms for holographic image display. This paper further improves its calculation speed and depth cues quality by introducing three different techniques, an improved coding scheme, a multilayer depth- fused 3D method and a fraction method. As a result the total computation time is reduced more than 4 times, and holographic images with accommodation cue are calculated in real time to interactions with the displayed image in a proof-of-concept setting of head-mounted holographic displays.
