Photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition and surface statistics of VO2 monitored by elastic light scattering

Fractal and Polarization Properties of Light Scattering Using Microcrystalline Pharmaceutical Aggregates

Fractal and polarization analysis of diffusively scattered light is applied to determine the complex relationship between fractal dimension of structural morphology and concentration of chemically active ingredients in two pharmaceutical mixture systems including a series of binary mixtures of acetaminophen in lactose and three multicomponent blends with a proprietary active ingredient. A robust approach is proposed to identify and filter out multiple- and single-scattering components of scattering indicatrix. The fractal dimension extracted from scattering field reveals complex structural details of the sample, showing strong dependence on low-dose drug concentration in the blend. Low-angle diffraction shows optical "halo" patterns near the angle of specular reflection caused by light refraction in microcrystalline aggregates. Angular measurements of diffuse reflection demonstrate noticeable dependence of Brewster's angle on drug concentration. It is shown that the acetaminophen microcrystals produce scattered light depolarization due to their optical birefringence. The light scattering measurement protocol developed for diffusively scattered light by microcrystalline pharmaceutical compositions provides a novel approach for the pattern recognition, analysis and classification of materials with a low concentration of active chemical ingredients.

Photoinduced surface plasmon switching at VO2/Au interface

Angle-resolved reflection, light scattering and ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy combined with a surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance technique in attenuated total reflection geometry was used to investigate the light-induced plasmonic switching in a photorefractive VO₂/Au hybrid structure. Measurements of SPP scattering and reflection shows that the optically-induced formation of metallic state in a vanadium dioxide layer deposited on a gold film significantly alters the electromagnetic field enhancement and SPP propagation length at the VO₂/Au interface. The ultrafast optical manipulation of SPP resonance is shown on a picosecond timescale. Obtained results demonstrate high potential of photorefractive vanadium oxides as efficient plasmonic modulating materials for ultrafast optoelectronic devices.

Mott transition in chain structure of strained VO2 films revealed by coherent phonons

The characteristic of strongly correlated materials is the Mott transition between metal and insulator (MIT or IMT) in the same crystalline structure, indicating the presence of a gap formed by the Coulomb interaction between carriers. The physics of the transition needs to be revealed. Using VO₂, as a model material, we observe the emergence of a metallic chain in the intermediate insulating monoclinic structure (M2 phase) of epitaxial strained films, proving the Mott transition involving the breakdown of the critical Coulomb interaction. It is revealed by measuring the temperature dynamics of coherent optical phonons with separated vibrational modes originated from two substructures in M2: one is the charge-density-wave, formed by electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction, and the other is the equally spaced insulator-chain with electron-electron (e-e) correlations.

Nonlinear Optical Materials for the Smart Filtering of Optical Radiation

The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Photoheat-induced Schottky nanojunction and indirect Mott transition in VO₂: photocurrent analysis

In order to elucidate a mechanism of the insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) for a Mott insulator VO2 (3d(1)), we present Schottky nanojunctions and the structural phase transition (SPT) by simultaneous nanolevel measurements of photocurrent and Raman scattering in microlevel devices. The Schottky nanojunction with the monoclinic metallic phase between the monoclinic insulating phases is formed by the photoheat-induced IMT not accompanied with the SPT. The temperature dependence of the Schottky junction reveals that the Mott insulator has an electronic structure of an indirect subband between the main Hubbard d bands. The IMT as reverse process of the Mott transition occurs by temperature-induced excitation of bound charges in the indirect semiconductor band, most likely formed by impurities such as oxygen deficiency. The metal band (3d(1)) for the Mott insulator is screened (trapped) by the indirect band (impurities).
