Ultracompact polarization rotator in an asymmetric single dielectric loaded rib waveguide

Simulation of a High-Performance Polarization Beam Splitter Assisted by Two-Dimensional Metamaterials

It is challenging to simultaneously consider device dimension, polarization extinction ratio (PER), insertion loss (IL), and operable bandwidth (BW) to design a polarization beam splitter (PBS) that is extensively used in photonic integrated circuits. The function of a PBS is to separate polarizations of light, doubling the transmission bandwidth in optical communication systems. In this work, we report a high-performance PBS comprising two-dimensional subwavelength grating metamaterials (2D SWGMs) between slot waveguides. The 2D SWGMs exhibited biaxial permittivity by tailoring the material anisotropy. The proposed PBS showed PERs of 26.8 and 26.4 dB for TE and TM modes, respectively, and ILs of ~0.25 dB for both modes, with an unprecedented small footprint of 1.35 μm × 2.75 μm working at the wavelength λ = 1550 nm. Moreover, the present structure attained satisfactory PERs of >20 dB and ILs of <0.5 dB within an ultrabroad BW of 200 nm.

Broadband TE-pass slot waveguide polarizer using an asymmetrical directional coupler

A compact TE-pass polarizer for silicon-based slot waveguides is numerically proposed based on a directional coupler where an asymmetrical slot waveguide (ASW) and hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) are involved. The input section is linearly tapered to an ASW to markedly enlarge the modal birefringence. Beneficially, only the TM mode can be coupled into the adjacent HPW and attenuated while the injected TE mode just passes through the slot waveguide without coupling by properly choosing the dimensions. As a consequence, an efficient TE-pass polarizer can be implemented. From the simulation results, the proposed polarizer has an extinction ratio (ER) of 45 dB and insertion loss (IL) of 0.44 dB at 1.55 μm, and its bandwidth exceeds 130 nm with the ER>30  dB and IL<1  dB. In addition, fabrication tolerances to the key structural parameters are analyzed and field evolution along the propagation distance is also demonstrated.

8.13 μm in length and CMOS compatible polarization beam splitter based on an asymmetrical directional coupler

A compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed based on an asymmetrical directional coupler consisting of a wide waveguide and a dielectric loaded narrow waveguide. Given that TE and TM polarizations are the dominant mode in the wide and narrow waveguides, respectively, a perfect phase-matching condition in the TM mode but a huge phase mismatching in the TE mode can be achieved. Therefore, the TE mode is almost uncoupled regardless of device length but the TM mode can only completely couple to the cross port at an appropriate coupling length. An ultrashort (∼8.13  μm long) PBS is designed based on a silicon-on-insulator nanowire with a loading refractive index of 2.0 and a gap width of 200 nm. Numerical simulations show that the proposed PBS has a broad bandwidth (∼100  nm) with large extinction ratio (>10  dB) and low insertion loss (<0.61  dB). The fabrication-error tolerance of the PBS is also discussed.
