Low-voltage-driven smart glass based on micro-patterned liquid crystal Fresnel lenses

Energy-saving all-weather window based on selective filtering of solar spectral radiation

Passive all-weather windows, capable of selectively transmitting visible and infrared solar radiation, could help in bringing down fossil-fuel energy consumption globally by reducing the carbon footprint of typical air-conditioning systems for buildings and motor vehicles. Here, we report on designing metal-insulator-metal thin-films for application in passive windows, optimized for different climatic conditions. We analyze designs comprising different noble metals as well as their relatively inexpensive alternatives. By finding an optimal choice of materials and thicknesses of the metal and dielectric layers, our lithography-free simple design can provide all-weather solutions for passive windows with desired visible and infrared transmission/blocking capability. Obtained theoretical results agree well with full-wave simulations. Thus, our proposed designs enable developing low-cost, ultra-thin (thickness: 47-85 nm), polarization-independent, angle-insensitive (up to 83 deg), and large-area-compatible passive windows with improved solar-radiation control for different weather/climatic conditions. The figure-of-merit calculation shows that the relatively inexpensive metals used in our passive glasses can outperform industry-standard commercial glasses and previously reported infrared-blocking plasmonic glasses.

Photo-Aligned Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Devices with Novel Electro-Optic Characteristics

This paper examines different applications of ferroelectric liquid crystal devices based on photo-alignment. Successful application of the photo-alignment technique is considered to be a critical breakthrough. A variety of display and photonic devices with azo dye aligned ferroelectric liquid crystals is presented: smart glasses, liquid crystal Pancharatnam–Berry phase optical elements, 2D/3D switchable lenses, and laser therapy devices. Comparison of electro-optical behavior of ferroelectric liquid crystals is described considering the performance of devices. This paper facilitates the optimization of device design, and broadens the possible applications in the display and photonic area.

Positive-negative tunable liquid crystal lenses based on a microstructured transmission line

In this work, a novel technique to create positive-negative tunable liquid crystal lenses is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This structure is based on two main elements, a transmission line acting as a voltage divider and concentric electrodes that distribute the voltage homogeneously across the active area. This proposal avoids all disadvantages of previous techniques, involving much simpler fabrication process (a single lithographic step) and voltage control (one or two sources). In addition, low voltage signals are required. Lenses with switchable positive and negative focal lengths and a simple, low voltage control are demonstrated. Moreover, by using this technique other optical devices could be engineered, e.g. axicons, Powell lenses, cylindrical lenses, Fresnel lenses, beam steerers, optical vortex generators, etc. For this reason, the proposed technique could open new venues of research in optical phase modulation based on liquid crystal materials.

High-efficiency aerial display using a liquid crystal polarization grating, a retroreflector array, and a right-angle prism

An aerial display scheme consisting of an orthogonal circular polarization grating (OCPG), a waveplate, a retroreflector array (RRA), and a right-angle prism (RAP) was developed. Because of the OCPG's functionality, retroreflected light from the RRA is transmitted through the RAP boundary surface by avoiding the total reflection condition. The proposed system can potentially increase optical throughput to 100% by designing the boundary surface incidence angle to be Brewster's angle. The scheme's feasibility was demonstrated experimentally using an OCPG and waveplate that were fabricated from polymer liquid crystal with optical anisotropy using a photoalignment technique. The scheme should be used as a type of aerial display that is compatible with polarization-diffractive elements called Pancharatnam-Berry phase elements.

Variable transmission optical filter based on an actuated origami structure

A variable transmission thin film for visible light is proposed based on a mechanically actuated origami structure coated with metallic nanoparticles. The transmissivity can be tuned continuously from 0 to >90% for unpolarized incident light. Power is only required for switching and is not necessary to maintain the desired transmittance state. The asymmetric metal nanorods create two distinct plasmon resonances. Controlling the orientation of the nanorods with respect to the direction of the incident light changes the optical transmittance. The switching speed is only limited by the mechanical actuation and not by the optical response of the materials. The applicability of the proposed film for smart glass applications is investigated. Good image transmission clarity with minimal distortion is shown.
