Compact low-noise passively mode-locked Er-doped femtosecond all-fiber laser with 2.68 GHz fundamental repetition rate

1.7 µm gain-switched and mode-locked hybrid Tm-Ho codoped fiber laser signal generation and optimization

We propose and experimentally demonstrate 1.7 µm gain-switched and mode-locked hybrid laser signal generation using a modulated pump and the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect. In the laser scheme, a 1.55 µm amplified modulated optical signal was used as a homemade pump. A bidirectional pumping configuration was adopted by splitting the homemade pump. A 1 m long thulium-holmium (Tm-Ho) codoped fiber was used as the gain medium. A fiber Bragg grating was employed as a spectral filter. The mode-locked laser pulse was obtained with a central wavelength of 1724 nm. The repetition rate was 11.81 MHz and the pulse width was 65.27 ps. Additionally, the gain-switched pulse sequences with a repetition rate from 50 kHz to 200 kHz were obtained by the modulated pump. Moreover, the mode-locked pulse train was filtered and modulated by the shape of the gain-switched pulse, and the hybrid pulse train was then obtained. Furthermore, the hybrid laser signals were analyzed and optimized by applying different waveforms of the modulated pump. The experimental results showed that the generated laser pulse driven by the sinusoidal signal has a better SNR (49.39 dB).

Vector soliton dynamics in a high-repetition-rate fiber laser

The existence of vector solitons that arise from the birefringence nature of optical fibers has been increasingly of interest for the stability of mode-locked fiber lasers, particularly for those operating in the high-fundamental-repetition-rate regime, where a large amount of fiber birefringence is required to restore the phase relation between the orthogonally polarized vector solitons, resulting in stable mode-locking free of polarization rotation. These vector solitons can exhibit diverse time-varying polarization dynamics, which prevent industrial and scientific applications requiring stable and uniform pulse trains at high fundamental repetition rates. This pressing issue, however, has so far been rarely studied. To this end, here we theoretically and experimentally dissect the formation of vector solitons in a GHz-repetition-rate fiber laser and investigate effective methods for suppressing roundtrip-to-roundtrip polarization dynamics. Our numerical model can predict both dynamic and stable regimes of high-repetition-rate mode-locking by varying the amount of fiber birefringence, resulting in the polarization rotation vector soliton (PRVS) and linearly polarized soliton (LPS), respectively. These dynamic behaviors are further studied by using an analytical approach. Interestingly, our theoretical results indicate a cavity-induced locking effect, which can be a complementary soliton trapping mechanism for the co-propagating solitons. Finally, these theoretical predications are experimentally verified, and we obtain both PRVS and LPS by adjusting the intracavity fiber birefringence.

Stable 5-GHz fundamental repetition rate passively SESAM mode-locked Er-doped silica fiber lasers

A stable passively mode-locked Er-doped silica fiber laser with a fundamental repetition rate of up to 5 GHz is demonstrated, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest repetition rate for 1.5 μm semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked Er-doped silica fiber (EDF) lasers. A segment of commercially available EDF with a net gain coefficient of 1 dB/cm is employed as gain medium. The compact Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity features a fiber mirror, namely multiple-layer dielectric films (DFs) directly coated on end facet of a passive fiber ferrule, enabling a short cavity length of 2 cm configured. The mode-locked oscillator operates at 1561.0 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 62.1 dB, whose average power is boosted to 27 mW by a single-mode Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and spectral bandwidth is broadened form 0.69 nm to 1.16 nm with a pulse width of 3.86 ps. The fiber laser shows excellent spectral stability without conspicuous wavelength drifting for 3 hours. Moreover, the basic guidelines of selecting SESAM for high repetition rate passively mode-locked fiber lasers is given.

Ultrafast Fiber Lasers: An Expanding Versatile Toolbox

Ultrafast fiber lasers have gained rapid advances in last decades for their intrinsic merits such as potential of all-fiber format, excellent beam quality, superior power scalability, and high single-pass gain, which opened widespread applications in high-field science, laser machining, precision metrology, optical communication, microscopy and spectroscopy, and modern ophthalmology, to name a few. Performance of an ultrafast fiber laser is well defined by the laser parameters including repetition rate, spectral bandwidth, pulse duration, pulse energy, wavelength tuning range, and average power. During past years, these parameters have been pushed to an unprecedented level. In this paper, we review these enabling technologies and explicitly show that the nonlinear interaction between ultrafast pulses and optical fibers plays the essential role. As a result of rapid development in both active and passive fibers, the toolbox of ultrafast fiber lasers will continue to expand and provide solutions to scientific and industrial problems.
