Optical sizing of nanoparticles in thin films of nonabsorbing nanocolloids

Alternative and simple method to determine the refractive index of human dentin

Determining a substance's refractive index (RI) is of great importance in a wide variety of disciplines, such as chemistry, biomedicine, engineering, and optics, to name just a few. This work utilizes critical-angle reflectometry to measure the refractive index of dentin, a biological tissue characterized by its high RI and complex structure. We fabricated a hollow semicircular prism and filled it with bromonaphthalene (1-B), allowing us to measure RIs up to 1.65. We used 5 tooth samples with exposed dentin and a laser diode beam (λ = 650 nm) incident on interface 1-B/Dentine; the reflectance curve was measured from 60° to 75°. The critical angle is determined, and dentin RI is calculated. The real part of the calculated dentine's RI coincided well with those determined by other more expensive and specialized techniques with high technical support.

Experiment and theory of the complex refractive index of dense colloidal media

The complex refractive index is analyzed by measuring its scattering attenuation μ s, group index n g, and group velocity dispersion (GVD) for 100 nm diameter silica nanoparticles dispersed in water. The experiments were performed for wavelengths between 410 nm and 930 nm. The experimental results were compared with different mixing models for the complex refractive index of colloidal suspensions. The group index linearly scaled with the volume fraction both in experiment and for all tested models. It was found that the GVD has a nonlinear dependence on volume fraction in agreement with the coupled dipole model of Parola et al. [J. Chem. Phys.141, 124902 (2014)JCPSA60021-960610.1063/1.4895961] The scattering attenuation is in good agreement with both the coupled dipole model and the low frequency quasi-crystalline approximation [J. Electromagn. Waves Appl.2, 757 (1988)JEWAE50920-507110.1163/156939388X00053] that take particle correlations into account. With an iterative fitting procedure of all the data based on both the coupled dipole model and the quasi-crystalline approximation, the refractive index, porosity, and size of the nanoparticles were determined. We determined that the coupled dipole model is in best agreement with the data.

Extinction Coefficient Modulation of MoO3 Films Doped with Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From an Effective Medium Theory Description

This work focused on the application of the effective medium theory to describe the extinction coefficient (Qext) in molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) doped with different kinds of plasmonic nanoparticles, such as silver (Ag), gold (Au), and copper (Cu). Usually, in studies of these materials, it is normal to analyze the transmission or absorption spectra. However, the effect of this type or size of nanoparticles on the spectra is not as remarkable as the effect that is found by analyzing the Qext of MoO3. It was shown that the β-phase of MoO3 enhanced the intensity response of the Qext when compared to the α-phase of MoO3. With a nanoparticle size of 5 nm, the Ag-doped MoO3 was the configuration that presents the best response in Qext. On the other hand, Cu nanoparticles with a radius of 20 nm embedded in MoO3 was the configuration that presented intensities in Qext similar to the cases of Au and Ag nanoparticles. Therefore, implementing the effective medium theory can serve as a guide for experimental researchers for the application of these materials as an absorbing layer in photovoltaic cells.

Effective medium theory to the description of plasmonic resonances: Role of Au and Ti nanoparticles embedded in MoO3 thin films

The growing interest in functional transition metal oxides for efficient energy consumption or in the bio-sensing process; indicates that is necessary to develop a new theoretical method that describes experiments. This article presents a new theoretical methodology to characterize molybdenum trioxide (MoO₃) thin films doped with resonant gold – nanoparticles (Au – NPs) and non-resonant titanium – nanoparticles (Ti – NPs). The modulation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and the implications in the MoO₃ transmittance spectrum is described by applying an effective medium theory. The transmittance modulation was modified by variating three parameters, the radius of the NPs, the concentration of the NPs as well as the variation of the MoO₃ thin films thickness. It was found that the nanoparticles concentration is the most important parameter in the transmittance modulation. Additionally, the orthorhombic and monoclinic structure of MoO₃ was studied, from which it was obtained that the monoclinic structure of the MoO₃ doped with Au – NPs favors the reduction in the transmittance values in the visible region which is associated with the increase of the SPR signal. Similar analyses are performed for non-resonant nanoparticles such as Ti, where it was found that optical modulation is not as marked as the case of gold nanoparticles.
