Magnetic-field tuning whispering gallery mode based on hollow microbubble resonator with Terfenol-D-fixed

Simultaneous measurement of bidirectional magnetic field and temperature with a dual-channel sensor based on the whispering gallery mode

What we believe is a novel dual-channel whispering gallery mode (WGM) sensor for concurrently measuring bidirectional magnetic field and temperature is proposed and demonstrated. Two sensing microcavities [magnetic fluid (MF)-infiltrated capillary and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated microbottle, respectively, referred as Channel 1 (CH1) and Channel 2 (CH2)] are integrated into a silica capillary to facilitate the dual-channel design. Resonant wavelengths corresponding to CH1 and CH2 mainly depend on the change in the magneto-induced refractive index and the change in the thermo-induced parameter (volume and refractive index) of the employed functional materials, respectively. The MF-infiltrated capillary enables bidirectional magnetic field sensing with maximum sensitivities of 46 pm/mT and -3 pm/mT, respectively. The PDMS-coated structure can realize the temperature measurement with a maximum sensitivity of 79.7 pm/°C. The current work possesses the advantage of bidirectionally magnetic tunability besides the temperature response, which is expected to be used in field such as vector magnetic fields and temperature dual-parameter sensing.

Highly sensitive magnetic field sensors based on Fe2O3 nanorods grown on the surface of a tapered few mode fiber

A magnetic field (MF) sensor with a stable structure and high sensitivity has been proposed and experimentally verified. We used the water bath method to produce a layer of Fe2O3 nanorods on a tapered few mode fiber (FMF) surface to form a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The experiment found that the nanostructure produced on the surface of FMF were particularly stable and firm. Under the action of an external MF, the magnetic permeability of a Fe2O3 nanorod will change, leading to a change in its refractive index, resulting in a linear shift in the resonance wavelength of MZI. The experimental results showed that the MF sensitivity of MZI reached -0.5348 nm/mT in 10 mT∼80 mT. In addition, MZI has a certain sensitivity to environmental humidity and temperature. A long-period fiber grating and a fiber Bragg grating are cascaded with MZI to achieve a simultaneous measurement of three quantities and eliminate their cross-sensitivity.

AC field modulated DC magnetic field sensor based on optical whispering gallery mode microcapillary resonator

A sensitive DC magnetic field sensor is constructed by measuring the signal-to-noise ratio of an AC-modulated magnetic field at a particular frequency from an optical whispering gallery mode microcapillary resonator. The sensing element consists of an optical whispering gallery mode microcapillary resonator bonded to a magnetostrictive material that enables it to respond to external magnetic fields. A DC magnetic field sensitivity of 0.1703dB/Oe and a linear detection range from 4.8Oe to 65.7Oe are realized under an AC modulation field of 168.1kHz in the unshielded environment at room temperature. To our best knowledge, this sensitivity is about 2.3 times of the maximum sensitivity of other DC magnetic field sensors based on magnetic fluid or magnetostrictive material integrated fiber systems that use the dissipative sensing scheme. Furthermore, the sensor can operate at a stable temperature in the range of [-11∼45]°C, as long as the modulation frequency of the AC-modulation field is adjusted according to the ambient temperature. This sensor provides us with a novel DC magnetic field sensing scheme, which may play a role in industrial fields related to current and position detection in the future.

Optical Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microbubble Sensors

Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microbubble resonators are ideal optical sensors due to their high quality factor, small mode volume, high optical energy density, and geometry/design/structure (i.e., hollow microfluidic channels). When used in combination with microfluidic technologies, WGM microbubble resonators can be applied in chemical and biological sensing due to strong light–matter interactions. The detection of ultra-low concentrations over a large dynamic range is possible due to their high sensitivity, which has significance for environmental monitoring and applications in life-science. Furthermore, WGM microbubble resonators have also been widely used for physical sensing, such as to detect changes in temperature, stress, pressure, flow rate, magnetic field and ultrasound. In this article, we systematically review and summarize the sensing mechanisms, fabrication and packing methods, and various applications of optofluidic WGM microbubble resonators. The challenges of rapid production and practical applications of WGM microbubble resonators are also discussed.

Magnetic Field Sensing Based on Whispering Gallery Mode with Nanostructured Magnetic Fluid-Infiltrated Photonic Crystal Fiber

A kind of novel and compact magnetic field sensor has been proposed and investigated experimentally. The proposed sensor consists of a tapered single mode fiber coupled with a nanostructured magnetic fluid-infiltrated photonic crystal fiber, which is easy to be fabricated. The response of magnetic fluid to magnetic field is used to measure the intensity of magnetic field via whispering gallery mode. The magnetic field-dependent shift in resonance wavelength is observed. The maximum magnetic field intensity sensitivity is 53 pm/mT. The sensor sensitivity is inversely proportional to the thickness of the photonic crystal fiber cladding.

Highly sensitive Mach-Zehnder interferometric micromagnetic field sensor based on 3D printing technology

A two-photon 3D printed polymer magnetic sensing device based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed. One arm of the MZI contains a hollow cavity and two connecting open channels that can be filled with magnetic fluids (MFs) and sealed by the UV curable adhesive, forming a magneto-optical component of the interferometer. As the magnetic field changes, the refractive index (RI) of the MF changes, and the effective RI of the guiding mode of the waveguide changes accordingly, which results in a change in the phase of the MZI. The interferometric spectra can be used to evaluate the sensing sensitivity. The MZI structure with a hollow length of 40 µm is fabricated, and the microstructure is encapsulated with MF, demonstrating a highly sensitive magnetic field device. The experimental results show that the magnetic field sensitivity of the fabricated magnetic field device is -1.675nm/Oe. For a spectrometer with a resolution of 1 pm, the minimal detectable magnetic field resolution of the sensor is up to 59.7 nT with good stability.
