Advanced control of an acousto-optic filter performance through arbitrary RF signals

The proposed study consists of using the capabilities of an arbitrary waveform generator to create a specific radio frequency (RF) signal to be applied to an acousto-optic tunable filter based on quasicollinear interaction. By controlling the duration and shape of the acoustic pulse, the filter transmission function can be changed in terms of selectivity and side-lobe levels. The measurement results show good agreement with the simulation model based on the fast Fourier transform. In particular, the Hamming window has been found to be a good option for suppressing side lobes in the transmission function, even when using high acoustic powers.

Hyperspectral Imaging for Clinical Applications

Measuring morphological and biochemical features of tissue is crucial for disease diagnosis and surgical guidance, providing clinically significant information related to pathophysiology. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) techniques obtain both spatial and spectral features of tissue without labeling molecules such as fluorescent dyes, which provides rich information for improved disease diagnosis and treatment. Recent advances in HSI systems have demonstrated its potential for clinical applications, especially in disease diagnosis and image-guided surgery. This review summarizes the basic principle of HSI and optical systems, deep-learning-based image analysis, and clinical applications of HSI to provide insight into this rapidly growing field of research. In addition, the challenges facing the clinical implementation of HSI techniques are discussed.

Noncritical acousto-optic Bragg phase matching: analysis of orthorhombic and monoclinic crystal systems

Anisotropic acousto-optic diffraction in crystals is the fundamental phenomenon that is used to design acousto-optic tunable filters. Noncritical and quasicollinear phase-matching geometries of Bragg acousto-optic diffraction are compared for acoustic symmetry planes in four crystal systems (tetragonal, trigonal, orthorhombic, and monoclinic). The results for uniaxial crystals are reviewed and generalized for biaxial crystals. It is shown that cubic frequency dependence on the Bragg angle exists in two symmetry planes of orthorhombic crystals and conditionally exists in the symmetry plane of monoclinic crystals. It is also shown that there are two points in the symmetry plane of monoclinic crystals where noncritical phase matching takes place in quasicollinear diffraction geometry that can be used to design high-resolution tunable filters. Phase-matching configurations in α-iodic acid and potassium gadolinium tungstate crystals are analyzed.
