The Evidence is in the Design

To better understand the effectiveness of Direct Instruction (DI), the empirical base related to DI's instructional design components (explicit teaching, judicious selection and sequencing of examples) and principles (identifying big ideas, teaching generalizable strategies, providing mediated instruction, integrating skills and concepts, priming background knowledge, and providing ample review) are analyzed. Attention is given to the converging evidence supporting the design characteristics of DI, which has broad applicability across different disciplines, teaching methodologies, and perspectives.

The search for an effective clinical behavior analysis: the nonlinear thinking of Israel goldiamond

This paper has two purposes; the first is to reintroduce Goldiamond's constructional approach to clinical behavior analysis and to the field of behavior analysis as a whole, which, unfortunately, remains largely unaware of his nonlinear functional analysis and its implications. The approach is not simply a set of clinical techniques; instead it describes how basic, applied, and formal analyses may intersect to provide behavior-analytic solutions where the emphasis is on consequential selection. The paper takes the reader through a cumulative series of explorations, discoveries, and insights that hopefully brings the reader into contact with the power and comprehensiveness of Goldiamond's approach, and leads to an investigation of the original works cited. The second purpose is to provide the context of a life of scientific discovery that attempts to elucidate the variables and events that informed one of the most extraordinary scientific journeys in the history of behavior analysis, and expose the reader (especially young ones) to the exciting process of discovery followed by one of the field's most brilliant thinkers. One may perhaps consider this article a tribute to Goldiamond and his work, but the tribute is really to the process of scientific discovery over a professional lifetime.

Causation and complexity: old lessons, new crusades

A body of experimental work performed by Israel Goldiamond and his colleagues over 30 years ago is used to help define the evidential problems raised for inferences concerning the causal efficacy of human thought. This work suggests that matches of public indicator responses of inferred private rules or states to experimenter score sheets may be considered only as weak evidence for causality. Further, the problems of inferring causality raised by Wittgenstein's skeptical challenge, and its implications for investigating the role of human thought in determining human behavior, are briefly described. A selectionist approach, which is currently being used by biobehavioral scientists to investigate the behavioral complexity which concerns Bandura (this issue) and others, is suggested as one way to study the role of private events in human behavior.

Effects of posthypnotic suggestion on perceived egocentric distance

The effects of posthypnotic suggestion on the perception of egocentric distance were evaluated by two methods, one direct and the other indirect. The direct method was the verbal report of the perceived distance of the stimulus. The indirect method used a measure based on apparent concomitant motion of the stimulus with a lateral movement of the head. The indirect method, unlike the direct method, has been shown to be insensitive to cognitive biases. Two highly trained hypnotic observers received posthypnotic suggestions to see a point of light at approximately 2, 4, or 6 ft (61, 122, or 183 cm) from themselves. For each suggested distance the light was physically at 2, 4, or 6 ft. As a control, trails were completed using these same physical distances without the posthypnotic suggestions. Nine experimental trails, one for each combination of suggested distance and physical distance, constituted a trial set. One observer completed three sets, and the other completed two sets. It was found that the posthypnotic suggestions affected the direct but not the indirect measures of the perceived distances of the light.
