Dynamic holography for optical interconnections. I. Noise floor of low-cross-talk holographic switches

Small phase pattern 2D beam steering and a single LCOS design of 40 1 × 12 stacked wavelength selective switches

Two-dimensional beam steering by small, square, phase patterns as small as 50 × 50 pixels on a phase-only liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) device is experimentally verified as suitable for the application of wavelength selective switches (WSSs), in terms of the diffraction efficiency and steering accuracy. This enables a proposed highly functional and versatile stacked switch architecture, where 40 independent 1 × 12 WSSs can be realised on a single 4k LCOS device. They can be configured to support a 1 × N WSSs with N≤144, or an N × N wavelength crossconnect with N≤12.

Effects of aliasing on the fidelity of a two dimensional array of foci generated with a kinoform

This paper investigates, through simulation and experiment, the behavior of two dimensional foci arrays generated via phase-only holography where an iterative algorithm was used to produce the kinoforms. Specifically, we studied how aliasing of the signal on a spatial light modulator affects the quality of the foci array as the density and size of the array are varied. This study provides a reference for applications where it is important to understand how the fidelity and overall quality of the foci array changes as the number of foci increases and as the spacing between foci decreases.

Multicasting optical interconnects using liquid crystal over silicon devices

This work presents the characteristics and expected capabilities of an optical interconnect that uses a diffractive liquid crystal over silicon (LCOS) device as a routing element. Such an interconnect may be used in a neighborhood's optical network to distribute high definition television, thus avoiding an electronic or optical transmitter for each user. The optimal characteristics of the LCOS device are calculated in terms of pixel number and silicon area and found to be feasible with today's technology. Finally, its performance in terms of optical efficiency and number of output ports is evaluated and found suitable for a neighborhood with hundreds of households.

Dynamic holography using pixelated light modulators

Dynamic holography using spatial light modulators is a very flexible technique that offers various new applications compared to static holography. We give an overview on the technical background of dynamic holography focusing on pixelated spatial light modulators and their technical restrictions, and we present a selection of the numerous applications of dynamic holography.

Active optical interconnect based on liquid-crystal grating

We propose a transparent plate of a liquid-crystal grating to be used as a light guide for optical interconnection. To this end, we are empowering the connection itself with active functions, such as switching, wavelength division, power adjustment, etc. In experiments, we built a grating based on in-plane switching. It contains vertically-aligned nematic liquid-crystal molecules between a glass plate with a high refractive index (light guide) and another glass plate with a pair of interdigitated electrodes. Entering a TM wave from an edge of the light guide, we have demonstrated that the activation of diffraction and intensity adjustment for the guided light are both possible. Because a TE wave is barely diffracted, the device also exhibits polarization division capability.

Dynamic holography for optical interconnections. II. Routing holograms with predictable location and intensity of each diffraction order

An analysis of dynamic phase-only holograms, described by fractional notation and recorded onto a pixelated spatial light modulator (SLM) in a reconfigurable optical beam-steering switch, is presented. The phase quantization and arrangement of the phase states and the SLM pixelation and dead-space effects are decoupled, expressed analytically, and simulated numerically. The phase analysis with a skip-rotate rule reveals the location and intensity of each diffraction order at the digital replay stage. The optical reconstruction of the holograms recorded onto SLM's with rectangular pixel apertures entails sinc-squared scaling, which further reduces the intensity of each diffraction order. With these two factors taken into account, the highest values of the nonuniform first-order diffraction efficiencies are expected to be 33%, 66%, and 77% for two-, four-, and and eight-level one-dimensional holograms with a 90% linear pixel fill factor. The variation of the first-order diffraction efficiency and the relative replay intensities were verified to within 1 dB by performing the optical reconstruction of binary phase-only holograms recorded onto a ferroelectric liquid crystal on a silicon SLM.
