Performance of a laser microsatellite network with an optical preamplifier

Ultra-High Capacity Optical Satellite Communication System Using PDM-256-QAM and Optical Angular Momentum Beams

Twisted light beams such as optical angular momentum (OAM) with numerous possible orthogonal states have drawn the prodigious contemplation of researchers. OAM multiplexing is a futuristic multi-access technique that has not been scrutinized for optical satellite communication (OSC) systems thus far, and it opens up a new window for ultra-high-capacity systems. This paper presents the 4.8 Tbps (5 wavelengths × 3 OAM beams × 320 Gbps) ultra-high capacity OSC system by incorporating polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 256-Quadrature amplitude modulation (256-QAM) and OAM beams. To realize OAM multiplexing, Laguerre Gaussian (LG) transverse mode profiles such as LG00, LG140, and LG400 were used in the proposed study. The effects of the receiver's digital signal processing (DSP) module were also investigated, and performance improvement was observed using DSP for its potential to compensate for the effects of dispersion, phase errors, and nonlinear effects using the blind phase search (BPS), Viterbi phase estimation (VPE), and the constant modulus algorithm (CMA). The results revealed that the proposed OAM-OSC system successfully covered the 22,000 km OSC link distance and, out of three OAM beams, fundamental mode LG00 offered excellent performance. Further, a detailed comparison of the proposed system and reported state-of-the-art schemes was performed.

Impact of pointing errors on performance of an intersatellite microwave photonics link with an optical preamplifier under dual-tone modulation

The intersatellite microwave photonics link with an optical preamplifier is affected by third-order intermodulation distortion under dual-tone modulation and pointing errors due to beam wander, which would greatly degrade the link performance. An exact analytical expression for signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) is derived considering the signal fade caused by the pointing errors of transceiver. It is shown that, given the desired SNDR and the rms random pointing jitter, an optimum modulation index of Mach-Zehnder modulator exists that minimizes laser output power. Moreover, an optimized model for laser output power and modulation index is established. The effects of the optical preamplifier gain and noise figure on the optimum link performance are also examined. Numerical results show that the minimum laser output power required to achieve the desired SNDR is more sensitive to the preamplifier noise figure. For an SNDR of 20 dB, doubling the preamplifier noise figure results in an 8.95 dB increase in minimum laser output power at the rms pointing jitter of 0.5 μrad.

Optimization of an analog intersatellite microwave photonics link with an optical preamplifier

An exact analytical expression of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for an intersatellite microwave photonics link with an optical preamplifier is derived considering the signal fade caused by the pointing errors of the transceiver, and an optimized model for laser output power and direct current (DC) bias phase shift of the Mach-Zehnder modulator is established. It is shown that, given the desired SNR and the root mean square (rms) random pointing jitter, an optimal DC bias phase shift exists that minimizes laser output power. The effects of the optical preamplifier parameters on the minimum laser output power and optimal DC bias phase shift are also examined. Numerical results show that the preamplifier noise figure determines the minimum laser output power needed to achieve the desired SNR but affects the optimal DC bias phase shift little. For a SNR of 20 dB, doubling the preamplifier noise figure results in a 6.36 dB increase in minimum laser output power for rms pointing jitter of 0.4 μrad.

Maximum fiber coupling efficiency and optimum beam size in the presence of random angular jitter for free-space laser systems and their applications

Free-space laser communication systems use optical-fiber-based technology such as optical amplifiers, receivers, and high-speed modulators. In these systems using single-mode fibers, the fiber coupling efficiency is one of the most significant issues to be solved. Optimum relationships between a focused optical beam and mode field size of the optical fiber in the presence of random angular jitter are discussed in relation to fiber-coupled optical systems. Maximum fiber coupling efficiency is analytically derived with the optimum Airy disk radius normalized by the mode field radius as a function of random angular jitter. The fade level of fiber-coupled signals at desired fade probability is investigated. It is shown that the average bit error ratio significantly degrades with the random angular jitter normalized by the mode field radius larger than about 0.3 when the Airy disk size is optimally selected.
