Channel analysis for single photon underwater free space quantum key distribution

Experimental study on underwater continuous-variable quantum key distribution with discrete modulation

We experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of an underwater continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system based on four-state protocol, which is promising to guarantee the unconditionally secure underwater wireless optical communication. CV-QKD parameter estimation is performed after transmitting quantum coherent signal from Alice to Bob through a water tank. The secure key rate under collective attack of the demonstrated CV-QKD system is estimated as 22.9 kbits/s at a channel loss of 12.4 dB. In addition, the performance is also investigated with various water types and the maximum underwater transmission distance of the demonstrated CV-QKD system is estimated as 148.7 m in the pure sea water.

In-lab demonstration of coherent one-way protocol over free space with turbulence simulation

Over the last decade, free-space quantum key distribution (QKD), a secure key sharing protocol, has risen in popularity due the adaptable nature of free-space networking and the near-term potential to share quantum-secure encryption keys over a global scale. While the literature has primarily focused on polarization based-protocols for free-space transmission, there are benefits to implementing other protocols, particularly when operating at fast clock-rates, such as in the GHz. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a time-bin QKD system, implementing the coherent one-way (COW) at 1 GHz clock frequency, utilizing a free-space channel and receiver. We demonstrate the receiver's robustness to atmospheric turbulence, maintaining an operational visibility of 92%, by utilizing a lab-based turbulence simulator. With a fixed channel loss of 16 dB, discounting turbulence, we obtain secret key rate (SKR) of 6.4 kbps, 3.4 kbps, and 270 bps for three increasing levels of turbulence. Our results highlight that turbulence must be better accounted for in free-space QKD modelling due to the additional induced loss.

Experimental underwater quantum key distribution

In recent years, the feasibility of quantum key distribution (QKD) in a water channel has been verified by theory and experiment. Here, we present an experimental investigation of QKD and decoy-state QKD based on the BB84 protocol. The experiment was carried out in a 10 m water tank. The attenuation coefficient of tap water is 0.08/m, which is close to Jerlov Type II seawater. We measured the probability-of-detection matrix of polarization states, and the average fidelity of the four polarization states is up to 98.39%. For the 10 m underwater QKD experiment, 20 MHz optical pulses are generated by modulating the laser diode (LD) and attenuated to an average of 0.1 photons per pulse. The security key rate can reach 563.41 kbits/s and the quantum bit error rate (QBER) is 0.36%. Two decoy states (one of which is the vacuum state) was used in the 10 m underwater decoy-state QKD experiment, and the average QBER of signal state is 0.95%, the security key rate reaches 711.29 kbits/s. According to the parameters of the decoy-state experiment, the maximum secure transmission distance of the underwater decoy-state QKD is predicted to be 19.2 m, while it can be increased to 237.1 m in Jerlov Type I seawater with a lower dark count single photon detector (SPD).

Monte Carlo-Based Performance Analysis for Underwater Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution

There is a growing interest in the security of underwater communication with the increasing demand for undersea exploration. In view of the complex composition and special optical properties of seawater, this paper deals with a performance analysis for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) over an underwater link. In particular, we focus on analyzing the channel transmittance and detection efficiency based on Monte Carlo simulation for different water types, link distances and transceiver parameters. A comparison between the transmittance obtained by simple Beer’s law and Monte Carlo simulation reveals that the transmittance of underwater link may be severely underestimated in the previous underwater CVQKD research. The effect of the receiver aperture and field of view (FOV) on detection efficiency under different water types is further evaluated based on Monte Carlo. Simulation results show that the transmission distance of the underwater CVQKD system obtained by Monte Carlo simulation in pure sea water, clear ocean water and coastal ocean water is larger than that obtained by Beer’s law, while the key rate of the system in all types of water is smaller than that obtained by Beer’s law because the size and FOV of the receiver aperture are taken into account. By considering the practical system parameters, this paper establishes a comprehensive model for evaluating the security of underwater CVQKD systems with different system configurations.

Security Analysis of Discrete-Modulated Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution over Seawater Channel

We investigate the optical absorption and scattering properties of four different kinds of seawater as the quantum channel. The models of discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) in free-space seawater channel are briefly described, and the performance of the four-state protocol and the eight-state protocol in asymptotic and finite-size cases is analyzed in detail. Simulation results illustrate that the more complex is the seawater composition, the worse is the performance of the protocol. For different types of seawater channels, we can improve the performance of the protocol by selecting different optimal modulation variances and controlling the extra noise on the channel. Besides, we can find that the performance of the eight-state protocol is better than that of the four-state protocol, and there is little difference between homodyne detection and heterodyne detection. Although the secret key rate of the protocol that we propose is still relatively low and the maximum transmission distance is only a few hundred meters, the research on CV-QKD over the seawater channel is of great significance, which provides a new idea for the construction of global secure communication network.

Characterization of an underwater channel for quantum communications in the Ottawa River

We examine the propagation of optical beams possessing different polarization states and spatial modes through the Ottawa River in Canada. A Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor is used to record the distorted beam's wavefront. The turbulence in the underwater channel is analysed, and associated Zernike coefficients are obtained in real-time. Finally, we explore the feasibility of transmitting polarization states as well as spatial modes through the underwater channel for applications in quantum cryptography.

Experimental investigation of quantum key distribution over a water channel

Quantum key distribution (QKD) has undergone significant development in recent decades, particularly with respect to free-space (air) and optical fiber channels. Here, we report a proof-of-principle experiment for the BB84 protocol QKD over a water channel. First, we demonstrate again the polarization preservation properties of the water channel in optical transmission according to the measured Mueller matrix, which is close to the unit matrix. The reason for the polarization preservation, revealed by Monte Carlo simulation, is that almost all the received photons are unscattered. Then, we performed the first polarization encoding BB84 protocol QKD over a 2.37 m water channel. The results show that QKD can be performed with a low quantum bit error rate, less than 3.5%, with different attenuation coefficients.

Theoretical study of a submarine to submarine quantum key distribution systems

Due to the absorption of water, communication between two parties submersed below the water is normally performed with acoustic waves. However, with the need for higher data rates, the use of RF or optical frequencies is needed. Currently, optical wavelengths have been demonstrated for classical communication over short distances. For these short distances, if a large amount of data needs to be transmitted securely, it is not feasible for both parties to return to the surface to communicate. Additionally, it can be assumed that a third party (Eve) is located in the channel trying to gather information. The solution is to use quantum key distribution (QKD) to generate the secure key, allowing the parties to continuously encrypt and transmit the data. It is assumed the BB84 protocol using pairs of polarization entangled photons generated from a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) source of Type-II. By using entangled photons, Eve is not able to gain information without being detected. In this work, horizontal oceanic channel is studied for various distances ranging from 10 m to 100 m, depth ranging from 100 m to 200 m, and surface chlorophyll-a concentrations at a wavelength of 532 nm. The secure key rates are calculated, assuming that a low-density parity check (LDPC) error correction code is used for information reconciliation. The maximum secure key rate and optimal number of average entangled photons transmitted are then studied for the various channels.
