Detecting topological index of randomly scattered V-point singularities using Stokes correlations

Topological defects in vector fields constitute polarization singularities that have numerous applications in classical and quantum optics. These beams are inhomogeneously polarized and are shown to self-heal under symmetric amplitude perturbations. Polarization singular beams are characterized using a singularity index that can be detected using Stokes polarimetry or other interferometric and diffraction approaches. However, the information about the singularity index is lost when these beams travel through random scattering media; this results in a spatially fluctuating polarization pattern known as polarization speckle. This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a new method to detect the topological index of these randomly scattered V-point singularities using higher-order Stokes correlations in a lensless condition. A detailed theoretical basis is developed, and the performance of the technique is demonstrated by retrieving the signature of polarization singularities with Poincaré-Hopf index |η|=1 and |η|=2. We also demonstrate that by studying the intensity-intensity correlations of the polarization speckle, it is possible to differentiate between different vector beams having the same magnitude as the Poincaré-Hopf index.

Relationship between Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect and spectral degree of polarization in light scattering from a collection of particles of $\mathcal {L}$ types

We consider the vectorial extension of the recently developed matrix theory for the correlation between intensity fluctuations (CIF) of the scattered field generated by a collection of particles of $\mathcal {L}$ types [Y. Ding and D. M. Zhao, Opt. Express 30 46460, 2022]. In the spherical polar coordinate system, we establish a closed-form relation that connects the normalized CIF of the electromagnetic scattered field with the pair-potential matrix (PPM), the pair-structure matrix (PSM), and the spectral degree of polarization $\mathcal {P}$ of the incident field. Based on this, we pay much attention to the dependence of the normalized CIF of the scattered field on $\mathcal {P}$. It is found that the normalized CIF can be monotonically increasing or be nonmonotonic with $\mathcal {P}$ in the region [0, 1], determined by the polar angle θ and the azimuthal angle ϕ. Also, the distributions of the normalized CIF with $\mathcal {P}$ at polar angles and azimuthal angles are greatly different. These findings are explained mathematically as well as physically, and may be of interest to some related fields, especially where the CIF of the electromagnetic scattered field plays important roles.

Autocorrelation functions and power spectral densities of the Stokes parameters in a polarization speckle pattern

The concept of ensemble-average polarization and coherence has been applied to studying fluctuating Stokes parameters in a polarization speckle observed when coherent light is passed through a birefringent polarization scrambler. With the aid of the ensemble-average van Cittert-Zernike theorem for the propagation of ensemble-average polar-coherence, we invesitgate the autocorrelation functions and power spectra of the Stokes parameters to expose the dependence of the polarization-related scale-size distributions on the optical geometries in which the polarization speckle arises. A generalized concept of the Stokes ensemble-average coherence areas is introduced to deal with the polarization-related average areas associated with polarization speckle.

On-axis phase-shifting correlation holography with un-polarized light

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an on-axis phase-shifting correlation holography technique with un-polarized light. The randomness of the un-polarized light is exploited to evaluate the higher-order polarization correlation and to consequently apply it in the reconstruction of the hologram from the randomness. A detailed theoretical analysis is developed and verified by numerical simulations and followed by experimental demonstrations. To validate the application of the proposed technique, imaging of different helical phase objects with randomness is presented. A good affinity is found between simulation and experimental results, which validates the accuracy of the proposed technique.

Polarization-resolved scintillations in Young's experiment

The conventional scintillation, or intensity fluctuation, that occurs in random electromagnetic beams is just one member of a broader class of four interconnected, polarization-resolved scintillations. We examine these generalized scintillations, called Stokes scintillations, that occur when two stochastic electromagnetic beams are made to interfere in Young's experiment. We find that the magnitude of the conventional scintillation can be decreased, within certain limits, at the expense of an increase of one or more of the other Stokes scintillations. For certain applications however, it may be beneficial to suppress the latter.

Unscrambling OAM mode using digital phase-shifting in the Stokes fluctuations correlation

In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, non-interferometric and highly stable technique to unscramble the incident orbital angular momentum (OAM) state and quantitatively measure the phase structure from the non-imaged random light. A new theoretical basis is developed and also verified by numerical simulation and experimental demonstration. We also quantitatively investigate the OAM modes of the incident light using orthogonal projection.

Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect in spatiotemporal domain

Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) effect has broad applications in optics and other branches of physics, and traditionally this effect is considered in pure spatial or temporal domain. Here we investigate the spatiotemporal HBT effect, extending this phenomenon from spatial or temporal to spatiotemporal domain. By assuming the Gaussian statistics of partially coherent spatiotemporal pulsed sources, we find the generalized analytical results for spatiotemporal HBT effect in the compact form, with the help of the matrix-optics method, which can consider the HBT effect in spatial and temporal domain simultaneously. Furthermore, for Gaussian Schell-model pulsed beams (GSMPBs) used as a spatiotemporal correlated source, we have obtained the generalized expression to calculate spatiotemporal HBT effect, which is useful for up to three-dimensional cases in any second-order linear dispersive medium. By taking a simple two-dimensional case and using air as an example of a linear dispersive medium, we numerically illustrate the properties of the spatiotemporal HBT effect by adjusting the spatial and temporal parameters of the GSMPB source, and reveal the influence of both the spatial and temporal parameters on the spatiotemporal HBT effect. This work paves the path towards the detailed study of HBT effect for a source containing spatiotemporal information with Gaussian statistics.

Spatial superbunching of light. Model sources

Sources that exhibit superbunching in the spatial domain are discussed. A few model sources are presented with the pertaining probabilistic treatment. Schemes for the experimental realization of similar sources are suggested, and the results of simulated tests are given.
