Real-time measurement of internal stress of dental tissue using holography

Stress analysis of horizontal mid-root fracture managed with different intraradicular fixation protocols: A 3D-finite element study

The current study evaluated the stress distribution in a maxillary central incisor with mid-root fracture after splinting with different intra-radicular posts using 3D-finite element analysis (FEA). Five 3D-FEA models were constructed. Model 1 was an intact tooth with no fracture, Model 2: A tooth with a horizontal mid-root fracture, with no treatment. Model 3: Same as model 2, and intraradicular splinting using fiber post. Model 4: Same as model 2 and intra-radicular splinting using Protaper Gold file F3. Model 5: Same as model 2, and with intraradicular splinting with Ribbond. The FEA of all models was done to obtain the maximum Von-Mises stress in the root canal space, the dentin, the periodontal ligament, and the bone. The highest Von Mises stresses for the root canal space and the dentin were found in Model 3, followed by models 4, 5, and 2, and least in Model 1. The Von Mises stress of the periodontal ligament was the least in model 1. The Von Mises stress of bone was higher in all experimental models than in the baseline model. The results suggest that in cases where intra-radicular splinting is indicated, fiber posts and Ribbond are better alternatives to endodontic files due to the lower stresses exerted.

Role of the beam profile and sample geometry in the bonded-disk method on the shrinkage kinetics of two dental resins

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the time evolution of the two dimensional axial shrinkage field for two dental resins in the bonded disk geometry and further test the bonded-disk method.

METHODS

An interferometric technique employing a camera was used to image the 2D axial shrinkage field when polymerizing dental resins in real time both during and after light exposure. Four different beam profiles from two light curing units and three sample geometries were utilized to investigate their roles on the 2D axial shrinkage field.

RESULTS

The 2D axial shrinkage field correlates qualitatively with the beam profile shortly after the start of light exposure but takes on distinct shapes caused by the rigidity of the coverslip, beam profile, and the resin viscoelasticity.

SIGNIFICANCE

Using the conventional bonded disk geometry and uniform beam profile from a light curing unit, the axial 2D shrinkage field was uniform to within 4% in the central part of bonded disk samples.

Single-beam, dual-view digital holographic interferometry for biomechanical strain measurements of biological objects

We describe a method for dual-view biomechanical strain measurements of highly asymmetrical biological objects, like teeth or bones. By using a spherical mirror, we were able to simultaneously record a digital hologram of the object itself and the mirror image of its (otherwise invisible) rear side. A single laser beam was sufficient to illuminate both sides of the object, and to provide a reference beam. As a result, the system was mechanically very stable, enabling long exposure times (up to 2 min) without the need for vibration isolation. The setup is simple to construct and adjust, and can be used to interferometrically observe any object that is smaller than the mirror diameter. Parallel data processing on a CUDA-enabled (compute unified device architecture) graphics card was used to reconstruct digital holograms and to further correct image distortion. We used the setup to measure the deformation of a tooth due to mastication forces. The finite-element method was used to compare experimental results and theoretical predictions.

[Three dimensional mathematical model of tooth for finite element analysis]

INTRODUCTION

The mathematical model of the abutment tooth is the starting point of the finite element analysis of stress and deformation of dental structures. The simplest and easiest way is to form a model according to the literature data of dimensions and morphological characteristics of teeth. Our method is based on forming 3D models using standard geometrical forms (objects) in programmes for solid modeling.

OBJECTIVE

Forming the mathematical model of abutment of the second upper premolar for finite element analysis of stress and deformation of dental structures.

METHODS

The abutment tooth has a form of a complex geometric object. It is suitable for modeling in programs for solid modeling SolidWorks. After analysing the literature data about the morphological characteristics of teeth, we started the modeling dividing the tooth (complex geometric body) into simple geometric bodies (cylinder, cone, pyramid,...). Connecting simple geometric bodies together or substricting bodies from the basic body, we formed complex geometric body, tooth. The model is then transferred into Abaqus, a computational programme for finite element analysis. Transferring the data was done by standard file format for transferring 3D models ACIS SAT.

RESULTS

Using the programme for solid modeling SolidWorks, we developed three models of abutment of the second maxillary premolar: the model of the intact abutment, the model of the endodontically treated tooth with two remaining cavity walls and the model of the endodontically treated tooth with two remaining walls and inserted post.

CONCLUSION

Mathematical models of the abutment made according to the literature data are very similar with the real abutment and the simplifications are minimal. These models enable calculations of stress and deformation of the dental structures. The finite element analysis provides useful information in understanding biomechanical problems and gives guidance for clinical research.
