Calibration of the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of surface and bulk of glass

Second harmonic generation under doubly resonant lattice plasmon excitation

Second harmonic generation is enhanced at the surface lattice resonance in plasmonic nanoparticle arrays. We carried out a parametric investigation on two-dimensional lattices composed of gold nanobars where the centrosymmetry is broken at oblique incidence. We study the influence of the periodicity, the incidence angle and the direction of the linear input polarization on the second harmonic generation. Excitation of the surface lattice resonance either at the fundamental or second harmonic wavelength, achieved by varying the incidence angle, enhance the conversion efficiency. As a special case, we demonstrate that both the wavelengths can be simultaneously in resonance for a specific period of the lattice. In this double resonant case, maximum second harmonic power is achieved.

Crystalline heterogeneity in single ferroelectric nanocrystals revealed by polarized nonlinear microscopy

Ferroelectric nanocrystals have considerable interest for applications in nanophotonics, optical memories and bio-imaging. Their crystalline nature at the nanoscale remains however poorly known, mostly because structural investigation tools on single nanocrystals are lacking. In this work we apply polarization resolved second harmonic generation (P-SHG) imaging on isolated Barium Titanate (BaTiO₃) nanocrystals to unravel their crystalline nature, exploiting the sensitivity of polarized SHG to local non-centrosymmetry and nanocrystals surface responses. We evidence crystalline heterogeneities in BaTiO₃ nanocrystals manifested by a centrosymmetric shell around the tetragonal core of the crystals, corroborating hypotheses from previous ensemble structural investigations. This study shows that in contrast to bulk materials, nanocrystals exhibit a complex composition, which is seen to be reproducible among nanocrystals. P-SHG appears furthermore as a powerful methodology that reports structural behaviors in nanoscale dielectrics materials, at the individual nanoparticle scale.

Eye safety implications of high harmonic generation in zinc selenide

Polycrystalline zinc selenide (ZnSe) has been the subject of many nonlinear optics studies for wavelengths under 4.0 µm including sum/difference frequency generation, harmonic generation, and filamentation. In this report, the conversion efficiency of high harmonic generation (HHG) in ZnSe is quantified for mid-infrared wavelengths ranging from 2.7 µm to 8.0 µm. By increasing the fundamental wavelength, we demonstrate that HHG in thick ZnSe targets is limited by the band gap. The high conversion efficiency of mid-infrared to near-infrared light in ZnSe raises concerns of a nonlinear retinal hazard. We contrast the HHG behavior of ZnSe against the observed harmonic generation of calcium fluoride, BK7, and fused silica over the same wavelengths.

Enhancement of bulk second-harmonic generation from silicon nitride films by material composition

We present a comprehensive tensorial characterization of second-harmonic generation from silicon nitride films with varying compositions. The samples were fabricated using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, and the material composition was varied by the reactive gas mixture in the process. We found a six-fold enhancement between the lowest and highest second-order susceptibility, with the highest value of approximately 5 pm/V from the most silicon-rich sample. Moreover, the optical losses were found to be sufficiently small (below 6 dB/cm) for applications. The tensorial results show that all samples retain in-plane isotropy independent of the silicon content, highlighting the controllability of the fabrication process.

On the determination of χ(2) in thin films: a comparison of one-beam second-harmonic generation measurement methodologies

The determination of the second-order susceptibility (χ⁽²⁾) of thin film samples can be a delicate matter since well-established χ⁽²⁾ measurement methodologies such as the Maker fringe technique are best suited for nonlinear materials with large thicknesses typically ranging from tens of microns to several millimeters. Here we compare two different second-harmonic generation setups and the corresponding measurement methodologies that are especially advantageous for thin film χ⁽²⁾ characterization. This exercise allows for cross-checking the χ⁽²⁾ obtained for identical samples and identifying the main sources of error for the respective techniques. The development of photonic integrated circuits makes nonlinear thin films of particular interest, since they can be processed into long waveguides to create efficient nonlinear devices. The investigated samples are ABC-type nanolaminates, which were reported recently by two different research groups. However, the subsequent analysis can be useful for all researchers active in the field of thin film χ⁽²⁾ characterization.

Bulk second-harmonic generation from thermally evaporated indium selenide thin films

We investigate bulk second-order nonlinear optical properties of amorphous indium selenide thin films fabricated by thermal evaporation. Such films are shown to exhibit strong and photostable second-harmonic generation (SHG). We report strong thickness dependence of the second-harmonic signals as characterized by the Maker-fringe method. The absolute value of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor of the film is addressed by analyzing the interference of SHG signals from the film and the glass substrate. The value of the joint non-diagonal component of the susceptibility is found to be 4 pm/V, which is comparable to that of widely used second-order nonlinear materials.

Recognition of multipolar second-order nonlinearities in thin-film samples

We use two-beam second-harmonic generation to address thin films of silicon nitride (SiN). This technique is able to distinguish between the dipolar and higher-multipolar (magnetic and quadrupolar) contributions to the nonlinearity, as earlier shown for bulk samples. Our results for the SiN films exhibit strong multipolar signatures. Nevertheless, the results can be fully explained by the strong dipolar response of SiN once multiple reflections of the fundamental and second-harmonic fields within the film are properly taken into account. The results show that the recognition of multipolar nonlinearities requires extreme care for samples typically used for the characterization of new materials.

Atomic layer deposited second-order nonlinear optical metamaterial for back-end integration with CMOS-compatible nanophotonic circuitry

We report the fabrication of artificial unidimensional crystals exhibiting an effective bulk second-order nonlinearity. The crystals are created by cycling atomic layer deposition of three dielectric materials such that the resulting metamaterial is noncentrosymmetric in the direction of the deposition. Characterization of the structures by second-harmonic generation Maker-fringe measurements shows that the main component of their nonlinear susceptibility tensor is about 5 pm/V, which is comparable to well-established materials and more than an order of magnitude greater than reported for a similar crystal [Appl. Phys. Lett.107, 121903 (2015)APPLAB0003-695110.1063/1.4931492]. Our demonstration opens new possibilities for second-order nonlinear effects on CMOS-compatible nanophotonic platforms.

Second-harmonic response of multilayer nanocomposites of silver-decorated nanoparticles and silica

We perform a detailed characterisation of the second-order nonlinear optical response of nanocomposites consisting of alternating layers of silver-decorated silica glass nanoparticles and pure silica glass. The samples are fabricated using aerosol techniques and electron-beam dielectric coating, resulting in a bulk-like material with symmetry-breaking induced by the porosity of the alternating layers. The second-order nonlinear response increases with the number of layers. Further, by determining the components of the second-order susceptibility tensor of the samples, we show that the structural properties of the samples are well maintained as the sample thickness is increased. Our results form an important baseline for any further optimization of these types of structures, which can be fabricated using very straightforward methods.

Efficient surface second-harmonic generation in slot micro/nano-fibers

We propose to use slot micro/nano-fiber (SMNF) to enhance the second-harmonic generation based on surface dipole nonlinearity. The slot structure is simple and promising to manufacture with high accuracy and reliability by mature micromachining techniques. Light field can be enhanced and confined, and the surface area can be increased in the sub-wavelength low-refractive-index air slot. The maximum conversion efficiency of the SMNFs in our calculations is about 25 times of that in circular micro/nano-fibers. It is promising to provide a competing platform for a new class of fiber-based ultra-tiny light sources spanning the UV- to the mid-infrared spectrum.

Effects of laser polarization and interface orientation in harmonic generation microscopy

We present systematic experimental investigations on the effects of laser polarization and interface orientation in second and third harmonic generation microscopy. We find that the laser polarization has no measurable effect on signal strength and resolution in third harmonic microscopy, while the second harmonic strongly depends upon the polarization direction of the driving laser. Moreover, we observe a strong effect of the interface orientation with respect to the laser beam direction-both in second and third harmonic generation. This affects the signal strength, as well as the obtained transversal and longitudinal resolution in microscopic imaging. As an (on the first glance) surprising feature, also surfaces parallel to the optical axis of the laser beam yield strong harmonic signal. This enables applications of harmonic microscopy in specific geometries. As an example we monitor the flow of immiscible microfluids in lateral cut by third harmonic microscopy.
