Controlling pre-tilt angles of liquid crystal using mixed polyimide alignment layer

Quantitative Biosensing Based on a Liquid Crystal Marginally Aligned by the PVA/DMOAP Composite for Optical Signal Amplification

The working principle for a liquid crystal (LC)-based biosensor relies on the disturbance in the orderly aligned LC molecules induced by analytes at the LC-aqueous or LC-solid interface to produce optical signals that can be typically observed under a polarizing optical microscope (POM). Our previous studies demonstrate that such optical response can be enhanced by imposing a weak electric field on LCs so that they are readily tilted from the homeotropic alignment in response to lower concentrations of analytes at the LC-glass interface. In this study, an alternative approach toward signal amplification is proposed by taking advantage of the marginally tilted alignment configuration without applying an electric field. The surface of glass substrates was modified with a binary aligning agent of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and dimethyloctadecyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] ammonium chloride (DMOAP), in which the amount of PVA was fine-tuned so that the interfacing LC molecules were slightly tilted but remained virtually homeotropically aligned to yield no light leakage under the POM in the absence of an analyte. Two nematic LCs, E7 and 5CB, were each sandwiched between two parallel glass substrates coated with the PVA/DMOAP composite for the detection of bovine serum albumin (BSA), a model protein, and cortisol, a small-molecule steroid hormone. Through image analysis of the optical appearance of E7 observed under the POM, a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.5 × 10−8 μg/mL for BSA and that of 3 × 10−6 μg/mL for cortisol were deduced. Both values are significantly lower than that obtained with only DMOAP as the alignment layers, which correspond to signal amplification of more than six orders of magnitude. The new approach for signal amplification reported in this work enables analytes of a wide range of molecular weights to be detected with high sensitivity.

Vertical Alignment of Liquid Crystals on Phenylphenoxymethyl-Substituted Polystyrene—PS Derivatives Structurally Similar to LC Molecules

A series of polystyrene derivatives containing precursors of liquid crystal (LC) molecules, phenylphenoxymethyl-substituted polystyrene (PPHE#; # = 5, 15, 25, 50, 75, and 100)—where # is the molar content of 4-phenylphenol using polymer modification reactions—were prepared in order to examine the effect of the polymer film, which possess similar LC molecular structure on the LC alignment properties. It was found that the Tg values of the PPHE# were higher than 100 °C due to their aromatic structure in the biphenyl-based PHE moiety. The LC cells fabricated with PPHE5 and PPHE15 films exhibited planar LC alignment. Conversely, LC molecules showed a vertical alignment in LC cells made using the polymer films with phenylphenoxymethyl side groups in the range of 25–100 mol %. The polar surface energies on the PPHE# films can be associated with the vertical LC alignment on the PPHE# films. For example, vertical LC alignment was exhibited when the polar surface energy of the polymer films was less than approximately 4.2 mJ/m2. Aligning stability was observed at 200 °C and UV irradiation of 20 J/cm2 for LC cells made using the PPHE100 film. Therefore, it was found that biphenyl, one of the LC precursors, modified polystyrene derivatives and can produce a next-generation vertical LC alignment system.

Nematic Structures under Conical Anchoring at Various Director Tilt Angles Specified by Polymethacrylate Compositions

Dependence of the director tilt angle of nematic liquid crystal (LC) under conical anchoring from the two-component polymer mixture composition has been studied. We varied the ratio of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), which specifies a conical anchoring for the nematic liquid crystal LN-396, and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) assigning a tangential alignment for the same nematic. An oblique incidence light technique to determine a tilt angle has been used. It has been shown that the tilt angle increases from 0∘ to 47.7∘ when PiBMA:PMMA ratio changes in the range 30:70 to 100:0. The specific optical textures viewed under the polarizing microscope and proper orientational structures have been considered for various compositions of the polymer films. An electric field action on the formed orientational structures has been investigated. The obtained results are promising for the application in various electro-optical LC devices with a conical anchoring in which the director tilt angle is a crucial parameter: a controlled diffraction gratings, an electrically operated achromatic rotators of linear light polarization, etc.

Effect of Position and Structure of the Terminal Moieties in the Side Group on the Liquid Crystal Alignment Behavior of Polystyrene Derivatives

We synthesized a series of polystyrene derivatives containing various side groups, such as the 4-(tert-butyl)-phenoxymethyl, 3-(tert-butyl)-phenoxymethyl, 2-(tert-butyl)-phenoxymethyl, 4-cumyl-phenoxymethyl, and 4-trityl-phenoxymethyl groups, through a polymer modification reaction to examine the liquid crystal (LC) alignment of these derivatives. In general, the vertical LC alignment on polymer films can be affected by the position and structure of the terminal moiety of the polymer side group. For example, the LC cells fabricated with 4-(tert-butyl)-phenoxymethyl-substituted polystyrene having a tert-butyl moiety as a para-type attachment to the phenoxy groups of the polystyrene derivatives exhibited vertical LC alignment, whereas the LC cells prepared from 3-(tert-butyl)- and 2-(tert-butyl)-phenoxymethyl-substituted polystyrene films exhibited planar LC alignment. In addition, the LC cells fabricated from 4-cumyl- and 4-trityl-phenoxymethyl-substituted polystyrene films with additional phenyl rings in the side groups exhibited planar LC alignment, in contrast to the LC alignment of the (tert-butyl)-phenoxymethyl-substituted polystyrene series. The vertical LC orientation was well correlated with the surface energy of these polymer films. For example, vertical LC orientation, which mainly originates due to the nonpolar tertiary carbon moiety having bulky groups, was observed when the surface energy of the polymer was lower than 36.6 mJ/m2.

Vertical Orientation of Liquid Crystal on Polystyrene Substituted with n-alkylbenzoate-p-oxymethyl Pendant Group as a Liquid Crystal Precursor

We synthesized a series of polystyrene derivatives modified with precursors of liquid crystal (LC) molecules via polymer modification reactions. Thereafter, the orientation of the LC molecules on the polymer films, which possess part of the corresponding LC molecular structure, was investigated systematically. The precursors and the corresponding derivatives used in this study include ethyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (homopolymer P2BO and copolymer P2BO#, where # indicates the molar fraction of ethylbenzoate-p-oxymethyl in the side chain (# = 20, 40, 60, and 80)), n-butyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (P4BO), n-hexyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (P6BO), and n-octyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (P8BO). A stable and uniform vertical orientation of LC molecules was observed in LC cells fabricated with P2BO#, with 40 mol% or more ethylbenzoate-p-oxymethyl side groups. In addition, the LC molecules were oriented vertically in LC cells fabricated with homopolymers of P2BO, P4BO, P6BO, and P8BO. The water contact angle on the polymer films can be associated with the vertical orientation of the LC molecules in the LC cells fabricated with the polymer films. For example, vertical LC orientation was observed when the water contact angle of the polymer films was greater than ~86°. Good orientation stability was observed at 150 °C and with 20 J/cm2 of UV irradiation for LC cells fabricated with the P2BO film.

Vertical Orientation of Liquid Crystal on Comb-Like 4-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl)phenoxymethyl-substituted Polystyrene Containing Liquid Crystal Precursor

We synthesized a series of polystyrene derivatives modified with precursors of liquid crystal (LC) molecules, including 4-(trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl)phenol (homopolymer PECH and copolymer PECH#; # = 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 60, and 80, where # indicates the molar fraction of 4-(trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl)phenoxymethyl in the side chain), 4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)phenol (PPCH), 4-(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)phenol (PBCH), and 4-(trans-4-amylcyclohexyl)phenol (PAmCH) via polymer modification reactions in order to investigate the orientation of LC molecules on polymer films exhibiting part of the LC molecular structure. A stable and uniform vertical orientation of LC molecules was observed in LC cells fabricated with PECH#, having 15 mol% or more of 4-(trans-4-ethylcyclohexyl)phenoxymethyl side groups. In addition, the vertical orientation of LC molecules was observed in LC cells fabricated with homopolymers of PECH, PPCH, PBCH, and PAmCH. The water contact angle on the polymer films could be associated with the vertical orientation of the LC molecules in the LC cells fabricated with polymer films. For example, a vertical LC orientation was observed when the water contact angle of the polymer films was higher than ~81°. Good orientation stability was observed at 200 °C and 15 mW/cm2 of UV irradiation for LC cells fabricated with PECH films.

Vertical Alignment of Nematic Liquid Crystals Based on Spontaneous Alignment Layer Formation between Silver Nanowire Networks and Nonionic Amphiphiles

The vertical arrangement of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) in displays can be generally achieved by introducing a polyimide material onto indium tin oxide electrodes. However, this method requires multiple coating and deposition processes as well as high curing temperature, restricting the potential applicability to flexible displays. Thus, we herein propose the facile approach for homeotropic alignment of nematic LCs based on spontaneous alignment layer formation between silver nanowire networks and nonionic amphiphiles. The silver nanowires as transparent electrode materials were spin-coated on glass substrate and 4-(4-heptylphenyl)benzoic acids as nonionic amphiphiles were doped into the LC medium. The nonionic amphiphiles were spontaneously bonded to the polyvinylpyrrolidone capping layer of silver nanowire networks through polar interactions, creating the self-assembled alignment layer of nonionic amphiphiles on silver nanowire electrodes. In addition, the alkyl chains of the amphiphiles interacted with the LC molecules, leading to stable directional LC alignment along vertical direction. The electro-optical characteristics of the manufactured LC cell were comparable to those of conventional device including polyimide layer and indium tin oxide electrode. Overall, the combination of silver nanowire electrode and nonionic amphiphiles presents a new way to achieve the vertical alignment of nematic LCs without polyimide layer.

Multiplicity of shape selection in functionally graded liquid crystalline polymers

The synergy of through-thickness gradation in the orientation of the molecular director and the extent of polymerization is shown to offer a framework for controlling shape selection in integral polymer films.

Depth map sensor based on optical doped lens with multi-walled carbon nanotubes of liquid crystal

In this paper, we present a novel design concept for determining the depth map of three-dimensional (3D) scenes based on an electrically controlled liquid crystal (LC) lens. The advantages of the proposed method are that it does not need any mechanical movements and a large amount of computations to acquire a depth map of a 3D scene in a relatively short amount of time. The tunable-focus LC lens doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes is to become a key optical component for determining a depth map system. Sequenced two-dimensional images of slightly different perspectives are recorded in a short time, and the depth map of the 3D scene, according to a proposed depth estimation method and a focusing evaluation function, can be acquired in a simple way. This new method to acquire a depth map based on a doped LC lens maximizes the use of the proposed LC lens. The proposed system is novel in its compact, simple, and fast features, so we believe the proposed method can open a new creative dimension in image analysis and imaging systems and can also overcome the limitations of the conventional imaging mode.

Tunable Surface Wettability of ZnO Nanoparticle Arrays for Controlling the Alignment of Liquid Crystals

The control of the liquid crystal (LC) alignment is very important for both academic research and practical applications. LC molecules aligned on the ZnO nanoparticle arrays (ZnO NPAs) are demonstrated and the pretilt angles of LCs can be controlled by using ZnO NPAs with different surface wettability. The wettability of ZnO NPAs fabricated by the solution-based hydrothermal method can be controlled by changing the annealing temperature of the as-prepared ZnO NPAs. The measurements of the energy-dispersive spectra and photoluminescence have shown that the chemical properties of ZnO NPAs have been changed with the annealing temperature. Our results show that the pretilt angle of LCs can be tuned continuously from ∼0 to ∼90° as the contact angle of water on ZnO NPAs changes from 33 to 108°.

Effects of silica nanoparticles on electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystals

We control the pretilt angle of liquid crystals (LCs) by simultaneously doping silica nanoparticles (SNs) and reactive monomers into the LC cell. Application of AC high voltage (ACHV) to the cell compels the lifting force and the facilitation of polar groups to move the SNs and monomers toward the substrate surface. Polymer networks and SNs are stabilized at the substrate surface after UV exposure, sustaining the LCs at high pretilt angles. The deposited SNs on the substrate surface increases the anchoring energy of the substrate; the dispersed SNs in the cell decrease the relaxation constant of LCs. Therefore, the response time of the high-pretilted-polymer-stabilized LC cell is decreased. The method enables the control of the LC pretilt angle over a broad range. The slow response time of the polymer-stabilized LC cell from high monomer dose can also be prevented following the addition of SNs.

Bifurcation properties of nematic liquid crystals exposed to an electric field: switchability, bistability, and multistability

Bistable liquid crystal displays (LCDs) offer the potential for considerable power savings compared with conventional (monostable) LCDs. The existence of two (or more) stable field-free states that are optically distinct means that contrast can be maintained in a display without an externally applied electric field. An applied field is required only to switch the device from one state to the other, as needed. In this paper we examine the basic physical principles involved in generating multiple stable states and the switching between these states. We consider a two-dimensional geometry in which variable surface anchoring conditions are used to control the steady-state solutions and explore how different anchoring conditions can influence the number and type of solutions and whether or not switching is possible between the states. We find a wide range of possible behaviors, including bistability, tristability, and tetrastability, and investigate how the solution landscape changes as the boundary conditions are tuned.

Polarization-independent liquid crystal lens based on axially symmetric photoalignment

A polarization-independent liquid crystal lens that is based on axially symmetric photoalignment is demonstrated. This liquid crystal lens is fabricated by combining radially and azimuthally aligned liquid crystal films with gradient alignments. The configurations of liquid crystals on the substrates are confirmed both optically and using a scanning electron microscope. The focal length of the polarization-independent liquid crystal lens can be controlled by applying various voltages. The device is simple to fabricate, and very convenient to use. It therefore has great practical potential.

Nanoparticle-doped polyimide for controlling the pretilt angle of liquid crystals devices

The pretilt angles of liquid crystal molecules can be controlled by using conventional polyimide (PI) alignment material doped with different concentrations of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsequioxanes (POSS) nanoparticles, which have been observed to spontaneously induce vertical alignment. The addition of POSS in the homogenous PI changes the surface energy of the alignment layer and generates a variable pretilt angle. Experimental results demonstrate that the pretilt angle thetap is a function of the POSS concentration, and can be tuned continuously over the range of 0 degrees <thetap<90 degrees. The polar anchoring energy of POSS/PI alignment layer is almost constant regardless of the POSS concentration. This technique is very simple and is compatible with methods familiar in the current LCD industry.

Multiple alignment modes for nematic liquid crystals doped with alkylthiol-capped gold nanoparticles

The ability of alkylthiol capped gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) to tune, alter, and reverse the alignment of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) has been investigated in detail. Adjusting the concentration of the suspended Au NPs in the nematic LC host, optimizing the sample preparation protocol, or providing different sample substrates (untreated glass slides, rubbed polyimide-coated LC test cell, or ITO-coated glass slides) results in several LC alignment scenarios (modes) including vertical alignment, planar alignment, and a thermally controlled alignment switch between these two alignment modes. The latter thermal switch between planar and homeotropic alignment was observed particularly for lower concentrations (i.e., around 1 to 2 wt %) of suspended NPs in the size regime of 1.5-2 nm and was found to be concentration-dependent and thermally reversible. Different scenarios are discussed that could explain these induced alignment modes. In one scenario, the NP-induced alignment is related to the temperature-dependent change of the order parameter, S, of the nematic phase (ordering in the bulk). In the second scenario, a change of the ordering of the nematic molecules around the NPs that reside at the interfaces is described. We also started to test spin coating as an alternative way of preparing nematic thin films with well-separated Au NPs on the substrate and found this to be a possible method for manufacturing of future NP-doped LC devices, as this method produced evenly distributed NPs on glass substrates. Together the presented findings continue to pave the way for LC display-related applications of Au NP-doped nematic LCs and provide insights for N-LC sensor applications.
