Not-lithographic fabrication of micro-structured fiber Bragg gratings evanescent wave sensors

New Hybrid PVC/PVP Polymer Blend Modified with Er2O3 Nanoparticles for Optoelectronic Applications

Polymer blend hybrid nanocomposites are of great importance for future optoelectronic applications. This paper presents the preparation of new polymer blend hybrid nanocomposites based on PVC/PVP modified with Er₂O₃ nanoparticles. A low-cost solution casting method has been used to prepare the polymer nanocomposites at 0.0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.6 wt% of Er₂O₃. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) measurements have all been used to examine the impact of a varying wt% of Er₂O₃ on the structural and optical characteristics of PVP/PVC polymer blends. The PVC/PVP polymer blend and Er₂O₃ nanoparticles showed a strong interaction, which was validated by XRD, FTIR, and Raman spectrum investigations. The SEM micrographs showed a remarkable complexation among the components of the polymer nanocomposites. The activation energies for thermal decomposition of PVC/PVP doped with different Er₂O₃ concentrations were less than that of the pure polymer film. The linear and nonlinear refractive indexes, dispersion energy, optical susceptibility and the energy gap values were found to be Er₂O₃ concentration-dependent. With an increase in Er₂O₃ concentration to 0.1 and 0.3 wt%, the dispersion energy and nonlinear refractive index improved, and thereafter decreased when the concentration was further increased to 0.6For the film doped with 0.1 wt% Er₂O₃, the optical band gap (E_opt) of the composite film enhanced by about 13%. The optical absorption measurements revealed clear improvements with the addition of erbium oxide. Higher refractive index values of PVC/PVP/Er₂O₃ films qualify the polymer blend as a cladding for electro-optic modulators. Our results indicated that the PVC/PVP/Er₂O₃ polymer films could be suitable for optoelectronic space applications.

One-dimensional photonic crystals with cylindrical geometry

A one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) consisting of a stack of alternate TiO(2) and Al(2)O(3) layers is deposited on the side wall of a glass rod by Atomic Layer Deposition. The stack is designed to sustain TE-polarized Bloch Surface Waves (BSW) in the visible spectrum at wavelengths shorter than 650 nm. Experimental evidence of light coupling and guiding capabilities of the 1DPC is provided together with a possible application for fluorescence-based remote sensors.

40 Gb/s optical subassembly module for a multi-channel bidirectional optical link

A 40 Gb/s bidirectional optical link using four-channel optical subassembly (OSA) modules and two different wavelengths for the up- and down-link is demonstrated. Widely separated wavelengths of 850 nm and 1060 nm are used to reduce the optical crosstalk between the up- and down-link signals. Due to the integration capabilities of silicon, the OSA is implemented, all based on silicon: V-grooved silicon substrates to embed fibers and silicon optical benches (SiOBs) to mount optical components. The SiOBs are separately prepared for array chips of photodiodes (PDs), vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), and monitoring PDs, which are serially configured on an optical fiber array for direct coupling to the transmission fibers. The separation of the up- and down-link wavelengths is implemented using a wavelength-filtering 45° mirror which is formed in the fiber under the VCSEL. To guide the light signal to the PD another 45° mirror is formed at the end of the fiber. The fabricated bidirectional OSA module shows good performances with a clear eye-diagram and a BER of less than 10(-12) at a data rate of 10 Gb/s for each of the channels with input powers of -8 dBm and -6.5 dBm for the up-link and the down-link, respectively. The measured inter-channel crosstalk of the bidirectional 40 Gb/s optical link is about -22.6 dB, while the full-duplex operation mode demonstrates negligible crosstalk between the up- and down-link.

Phase-shifted Bragg microstructured optical fiber gratings utilizing infiltrated ferrofluids

Results are presented on the efficient spectral manipulation of uniform and chirped Bragg reflectors inscribed in microstructured optical fibers utilizing short lengths of ferrofluids infiltrated in their capillaries. The infiltrated ferrofluidic defects can generate either parasitic reflection notch features in uniform Bragg reflectors of up to 80% visibility and ~0.1 nm spectral shift or tunability of the bandwidth and strength reflection up to 100% when introduced into chirped gratings. Spectra are presented for different spatial positions and optical characteristics of the ferrofluidic section.

Highly sensitive miniature photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor based on mode field excitation

A highly sensitive miniature photonic crystal fiber refractive index sensor based on field mode excitation is presented. The sensor is fabricated by melting one end of a photonic crystal fiber into a rounded tip and splicing and collapsing the other end with a single-mode fiber. The rounded tip is able to induce cladding mode excitation, which resulted in an additional phase delay. Linear response of 262.28 nm/refractive index unit in the refractive index range of 1.337 to 1.395 is obtained for the physical length of a 953 μm sensor. The sensor is also shown to be insensitive to environmental temperature.

Optical detection of volatile organic compounds using selective tensile effects of a polymer-coated fiber Bragg grating

We demonstrated a novel selective chemical sensing approach by incorporating a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-coated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) structure for optically detecting various volatile organic compounds (VOC's). When the proposed structure is exposed to a nonpolar solvent, a tensile stress is induced between the coated PDMS and the optical fiber by a VOC-dependent swelling effect of the PDMS, which results in a Bragg wavelength shift dependent on the concentration and the type of VOC's. Because of no need of an etching process of a fiber cladding, the proposed PDMS-coated FBG can be used as a simple, convenient, and durable chemical sensing element with a high sensitivity, compared with conventional FBG sensors requiring an evanescent wave coupling.

Hybrid fiber grating cavity for multi-parametric sensing

We propose an all-fiber hybrid cavity involving two unbalanced uniform fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) written at both sides of a tilted FBG (TFBG) to form an all-fiber interferometer. This configuration provides a wavelength gated reflection signal with interference fringes depending on the cavity features modulated by spectral dips associated to the wavelength dependent optical losses due to cladding mode coupling occurring along the TFBG. Such a robust structure preserves the advantages of uniform FBGs in terms of interrogation methods and allows the possibility of simultaneous physical and chemical sensing.
