Advances in Silica-Based Large Mode Area and Polarization-Maintaining Photonic Crystal Fiber Research

In recent years, photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have attracted increasing attention. Compared with traditional optical fibers, PCFs exhibit many unique optical properties and superior performance due to their high degree of structural design freedom. Using large-mode area (LMA) fibers with single-mode operation is essential to overcoming emerging problems as the power of fiber lasers scales up, which can effectively reduce the power density and mitigate the influence of nonlinear effects. With a brief introduction of the concept, classification, light transmission mechanism, basic properties, and theoretical analysis methods of PCFs, this paper mainly compiles the worldwide development of large-mode area and polarization-maintaining (PM) PCFs, and finally proposes possible technical routes to realize the single-mode operation of LMA-PCFs and PM-LMA-PCFs. Finally, the future development prospects of the PCFs are discussed.

Recent progress in all-fiber ultrafast high-order mode lasers

Ultrafast high-order mode (HOM) lasers are a relatively new class of ultrafast optics. They play a significant role in the fieldsof scientific research and industrial applications due to the high peak power and unique properties of spatial intensity and polarization distribution. Generation of ultrafast HOM beams in all-fiber systems has become an important research direction. In this paper, all-fiber mode conversion techniques, pulsed HOM laser strategies, and few-mode/multi-mode fiber (FMF/MMF) lasers are reviewed. The main motivation of this review is to highlight recent advances in the field of all-fiber ultrafast HOM lasers, for example, generating different HOM pulses based on fiber mode converters and mode-locking in the FMF/MMF lasers. These results suggest that mode selective coupler can be used as a broad bandwidth mode converter with fast response and HOM can be directly oscillated in the FMF/MMF laser cavity with high stability. In addition, spatiotemporal mode-locking in the FMF/MMF is also involved. It is believed that the development of all-fiber ultrafast HOM lasers will continue to deepen, thus laying a good foundation for future applications.

Efficient low-brightness-pumped Raman amplification of a single high-order Bessel mode in 335-m of 70-µm-diameter silica-core step-index fiber

We experimentally demonstrate Raman amplification of signal pulses in a high-order Bessel mode (LP₀₆) at a wavelength of 1121 nm in a 335-m step-index fiber with a 70-µm diameter, 0.227-NA pure-silica core. This was pumped by 5-ns multimode pulses at 1065 nm from a Yb-doped fiber master oscillation power amplifier. The mode purity of the amplified pulses is well preserved to 23 dB of average-power gain, to 774 W of peak power in 2 ns pulses at a 20 kHz repetition rate, when pumped with a peak power of 942 W. The pump depletion as averaged over the signal pulses reaches 59%. We believe, to the best of our knowledge, that this is the first demonstration of stable mode propagation and Raman amplification of a single Bessel-like higher-order mode in a fiber of hundreds of meters. This shows the potential for efficient power scaling of a single signal mode with low-brightness pumping, comparable with that from continuous-wave multimode diode lasers.

Multimode-pumped Raman amplification of a higher order mode in a large mode area fiber

We report the first demonstration of Raman amplification in a fiber of a single Bessel-like higher order mode using a multimode pump source. We amplify the LP₀₈-mode with a 559-µm² effective mode area at a signal wavelength of 1115 nm in a pure-silica-core step-index fiber. A maximum of 18 dB average power gain is achieved in a 9-m long gain fiber, with output pulse energy of 115 µJ. The Raman pump source comprises a pulsed 1060 nm ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier with V-value ~30, which is matched to the Raman gain fiber. The pump depletion as averaged over the signal pulses reaches 36.7%. The conversion of power from the multimode pump into the signal mode demonstrates the potential for efficient brightness enhancement with low amplification-induced signal mode purity degradation.

Efficient strategy to increase higher order inter-modal stability of a step index multimode fiber

We demonstrate a novel approach to enhance the mode stability through increased effective index difference (Δneff) between the higher-order modes (LP₁₈, LP₀₉ and LP₁₉) of a multimode fiber. Fibers with large diameters have bigger effective mode areas (Aeff) and can be useful for high power lasers and amplifiers. However, a large mode area (LMA) results in an increased number of modes that can be more susceptible to mode coupling. The modal effective index difference (Δneff) strongly correlates with mode stability and this increases as the modal order (m) increases. We report here that the mode spacing between the higher order modes can be further enhanced by introducing doped concentric rings in the core. In our work, we have shown a more than 35% increase in the mode spacing between the higher order modes by optimizing the doping profile of a LMA fiber. The proposed design technique is also scalable and can be applied to improve the mode spacing between different higher order modes and their neighboring antisymmetric modes, as necessary.

Bending effect characterization of individual higher-order modes in few-mode fibers

We propose an approach to directly measure the bending effect on individual modes in few-mode fibers using a wavelength-scanning spatially and spectrally resolved imaging technique. By collecting a fiber output beam profile with a scanning wavelength at different bending diameters and analyzing the peaks of its Fourier transformation, we have distinguished higher-order modes (HOMs) of the fiber and investigated their group delay, beam profile, bend loss, and mode splitting individually. We have experimentally verified with a multilayer core fiber at 1-8 cm bending diameters that its HOMs experience more loss compared to lower-order modes, but delay at approximately the same speed as the bending diameter decreases. Mode splitting of the LP₁₁ mode at a small bending diameter due to bending-induced birefringence is also observed and discussed. This method provides an efficient tool to study the bending effect on individual HOMs in fibers and could be extended to studying fiber stretching and twisting.

Raman amplification of pure side-seeded higher-order modes in hydrogen-filled hollow-core PCF

We use Raman amplification in hydrogen-filled hollow-core kagomé photonic crystal fiber to generate high energy pulses in pure single higher-order modes. The desired higher-order mode at the Stokes frequency is precisely seeded by injecting a pulse of light from the side, using a prism to select the required modal propagation constant. An intense pump pulse in the fundamental mode transfers its energy to the Stokes seed pulse with measured gains exceeding 60 dB and output pulse energies as high as 8 µJ. A pressure gradient is used to suppress stimulated Raman scattering into the fundamental mode at the Stokes frequency. The growth of the Stokes pulse energy is experimentally and theoretically investigated for six different higher-order modes. The technique has significant advantages over the use of spatial light modulators to synthesize higher-order mode patterns, since it is very difficult to perfectly match the actual eigenmode of the fiber core, especially for higher-order modes with complex multi-lobed transverse field profiles.

Large mode area waveguides with polarization functions by volume ultrafast laser photoinscription of fused silica

We present optical designs allowing large mode area light guiding by ultrafast laser photoinscription of bulk fused silica. If usual concepts are based on large core and depressed cladding, evanescently coupled multicore waveguides with coherent mode superposition can be effective solutions, where the introduction of nanostructured defects determines additional polarization functions.

Cross-correlated imaging of single-mode photonic crystal rod fiber with distributed mode filtering

Photonic crystal bandgap fibers employing distributed mode filtering design provide near diffraction-limited light outputs, a critical property of fiber-based high-power lasers. Microstructure of the fibers is tailored to achieve single-mode operation at specific wavelength by resonant mode coupling of higher-order modes. We analyze the modal regimes of the fibers having a mode field diameter of 60 µm by the cross-correlated (C(2)) imaging method in different wavelength ranges and evaluate the sensitivity of the modal content to various input-coupling conditions. As a result, we experimentally identify regimes of resonant coupling between higher-order core modes and cladding band. We demonstrate a passive fiber design in which the higher-order modal content inside the single-mode guiding regime is suppressed by at least 20 dB even for significantly misaligned input-coupling configurations.

Large mode area fibers with asymmetric bend compensation

Fibers with asymmetrical bend compensation offer to completely remove the tradeoff between mode area and single-modedness, with potentially huge impact on high-power amplification. These fibers would be difficult to fabricate, but are the only fundamental-mode strategy that can remove the bend-distortion limitations on mode-area scaling. Here, we show that even imperfect fibers can achieve essentially complete HOM suppression for areas of 2000 square microns or larger. Ultimate performance limits due to finite cladding size and fabrication imperfections are calculated.

Fiber laser with combined feedback of core and cladding modes assisted by an intracavity long-period grating

We present a fiber laser made in a single piece of conventional doped-core fiber that operates by combined feedback of the fundamental core mode LP((0,1)) and the high-order cladding mode LP((0,10)). The laser is an all-fiber structure that uses two fiber Bragg gratings and a long-period grating to select the modes circulating in the cavity; the laser emits at the coupling wavelength between the core mode LP((0,1)) and the counterpropagating cladding mode LP((0,10)) in the Bragg gratings. This work demonstrates the feasibility of high-order mode fiber lasers assisted by long-period gratings.

Single-Mode ytterbium-doped Large-Mode-Area photonic bandgap rod fiber amplifier

Enabling Single-Mode (SM) operation in Large-Mode-Area (LMA) fiber amplifiers and lasers is critical, since a SM output ensures high beam quality and excellent pointing stability. In this paper, we demonstrate and test a new design approach for achieving SM LMA rod fibers by using a photonic bandgap structure. The structure allows resonant coupling of higher-order modes from the core and acts as a spatially Distributed Mode Filter (DMF). With this approach, we demonstrate passive SM performance in an only ~50 cm long and straight ytterbium-doped rod fiber. The amplifier has a mode field diameter of ~59 µm at 1064 nm and exhibits a pump absorption of 27 dB/m at 976 nm.
