Gradient forces on double-negative particles in optical tweezers using Bessel beams in the ray optics regime

Broadband Variable Meta-Axicons Based on Nano-Aperture Arrays in a Metallic Film

Metasurfaces are two-dimensional metamaterials composed of a carefully designed series of subwavelength meta-atom (antenna or aperture) arrays. These surfaces can manipulate the phase, amplitude and polarization of output light by changing the shapes and orientations of the meta-atoms on a subwavelength scale. Using these properties, we experimentally demonstrate variable meta-axicons composed of rectangular nano-apertures arranged in several concentric rings that can focus left circularly polarized (LCP) light into a real Bessel beam and defocus right circular polarized (RCP) light to form a virtual beam. A desired phase discontinuity in cross-polarized transmitted light is introduced along the interface by controlling the orientations of the nano-apertures. In addition, the meta-axicons can generate Bessel beams of arbitrary orders by suitable design of the phase profile along the surface. The meta-axicons demonstrate broadband optical properties that can switch the wavelength of the incident light from 690 nm to 1050 nm. These variable meta-axicons open a path towards the development of new applications using integrated beam shaping devices.

Computation of radiation pressure force exerted on arbitrary shaped homogeneous particles by high-order Bessel vortex beams using MLFMA

Due to special characteristics of nondiffraction and self reconstruction, the Bessel beams have attracted wide attention in optical trapping and appear to be a dramatic alternative to Gaussian beams. We present in this paper an efficient approach based on the surface integral equations (SIE) to compute the radiation pressure force (RPF) exerted on arbitrary shaped homogeneous particles by high-order Bessel vortex beam (HOBVB). The incident beam is described by vector expressions perfectly satisfy Maxwell's equations. The problem is formulated with the combined tangential formulation (CTF) and solved iteratively with the aid of the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA). Then RPF is computed by vector flux of the Maxwell's stress tensor over a spherical surface tightly enclosing the particle and analytical expression for electromagnetic fields of incident beam in near region are used. The numerical predictions are compared with the results of the rigorous method for spherical particle to validate the accuracy of the approach. Some numerical results on relative large particles of complex shape, such as biconcave cell-like particles with different geometry parameters are given, showing powerful capability of our approach. These results are expected to provide useful insights into the RPF exerted on complex shaped particles by HOBVB.

Analytical approach of ordinary frozen waves for optical trapping and micromanipulation

The optical properties of frozen waves (FWs) are theoretically and numerically investigated using the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT) together with integral localized approximation. These waves are constructed from a suitable superposition of equal-frequency ordinary Bessel beams and are capable of providing almost any desired longitudinal intensity profile along their optical axis, thus being of potential interest in applications in which intensity localization may be used advantageously, such as in optical trapping and micromanipulation systems. In addition, because FWs are composed of nondiffracting beams, they are also capable of overcoming the diffraction effects for longer distances when compared to conventional (ordinary) beams, e.g., Gaussian beams. Expressions for the beam-shape coefficients of FWs are provided, and the GLMT is used to reconstruct their intensity profiles and to predict their optical properties for possible biomedical optics purposes.

Optical force on a large sphere illuminated by Bessel beams: comparisons between ray optics method and generalized Lorenz-Mie theory

Optical forces are calculated for a dielectric spherical particle illuminated by a zero-order Bessel beam based on both the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT) and the ray optics method (ROM). Particles with positive and negative refractive indices are examined. The peculiar characteristics of the Bessel beam allow for analytical expressions for the beam shape coefficients required in the GLMT as well as a decomposition of optical force into the gradient and the scattering forces irrespective of the particle size, which enable respective comparisons for the gradient and scattering forces between the results obtained from the GLMT and the ROM. Our results demonstrate that the discrepancy between the results obtained from the GLMT and the ROM depends on the particle refractive index n_p, the particle size, and, also, the particle location in the beam field. As the particle size increases, the difference between the results from the GLMT and the ROM shows a general tendency of decreasing, as can be expected, but the change may exhibit oscillatory rather than monotonic behavior. A phase diagram is presented that displays the regime for particle size and refractive index where a specified accuracy can be achieved for optical force by the ROM.

Reflection and transmission of normally incident full-vector X waves on planar interfaces

The reflection and transmission of full-vector X waves normally incident on planar half-spaces and slabs are studied. For this purpose, X waves are expanded in terms of weighted vector Bessel beams; this new decomposition and reconstruction method offers a more lucid and intuitive interpretation of the physical phenomena observed upon the reflection or transmission of X waves when compared to the conventional plane-wave decomposition technique. Using the Bessel beam expansion approach, we have characterized changes in the field shape and the intensity distribution of the transmitted and reflected full-vector X waves. We have also identified a novel longitudinal shift, which is observed when a full-vector X wave is transmitted through a dielectric slab under frustrated total reflection condition. The results of our studies presented here are valuable in understanding the behavior of full-vector X waves when they are utilized in practical applications in electromagnetics, optics, and photonics, such as trap and tweezer setups, optical lithography, and immaterial probing.

Spin angular momentum transfer from TEM(00) focused Gaussian beams to negative refractive index spherical particles

We investigate optical torques over absorbent negative refractive index spherical scatterers under the influence of linear and circularly polarized TEM(00) focused Gaussian beams, in the framework of the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory with the integral localized approximation. The fundamental differences between optical torques due to spin angular momentum transfer in positive and negative refractive index optical trapping are outlined, revealing the effect of the Mie scattering coefficients in one of the most fundamental properties in optical trapping systems.

Radiation pressure cross sections and optical forces over negative refractive index spherical particles by ordinary Bessel beams

When impinged by an arbitrary laser beam, lossless and homogeneous negative refractive index (NRI) spherical particles refract and reflect light in an unusual way, giving rise to different scattered and internal fields when compared to their equivalent positive refractive index particles. In the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory, the scattered fields are dependent upon the Mie scattering coefficients, whose values must reflect the metamaterial behavior of an NRI scatterer, thus leading to new optical properties such as force and torque. In this way, this work is devoted to the analysis of both radial and longitudinal optical forces exerted on lossless and simple NRI particles by zero-order Bessel beams, revealing how the force profiles are changed whenever the refractive index becomes negative.

Energy flow characteristics of vector X-Waves

The vector form of X-Waves is obtained as a superposition of transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarized field components. It is shown that the signs of all components of the Poynting vector can be locally changed using carefully chosen complex amplitudes of the transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarization components. Negative energy flux density in the longitudinal direction can be observed in a bounded region around the centroid; in this region the local behavior of the wave field is similar to that of wave field with negative energy flow. This peculiar energy flux phenomenon is of essential importance for electromagnetic and optical traps and tweezers, where the location and momenta of micro-and nanoparticles are manipulated by changing the Poynting vector, and in detection of invisibility cloaks.

Numerical study for selective excitation of Mathieu-Gauss modes in end-pumped solid-state laser systems

This study reports a possible first systematic approach to the selective excitations of all Mathieu-Gauss modes (MGMs) in end-pumped solid-state lasers with a new kind of axicon-based stable laser resonator. The study classifies MGMs into two categories, and explores and verifies the approach to excite each MGM category using numerical simulations. Controlling both the "cavity mode gain" and the "cavity conical asymmetry" of the axicon-based stable laser resonator achieves the proposed selective MGM-excitation approach.
