Optical Phenomena in Mesoscale Dielectric Particles

During the last decade, new unusual physical phenomena have been discovered in studying the optics of dielectric mesoscale particles of an arbitrary three-dimensional shape with the Mie size parameter near 10 (q~10). The paper provides a brief overview of these phenomena from optics to terahertz, plasmonic and acoustic ranges. The different particle configurations (isolated, regular or Janus) are discussed, and the possible applications of such mesoscale structures are briefly reviewed herein in relation to the field enhancement, nanoparticle manipulation and super-resolution imaging. The number of interesting applications indicates the appearance of a new promising scientific direction in optics, terahertz and acoustic ranges, and plasmonics. This paper presents the authors’ approach to these problems.

Low-Power Light Guiding and Localization in Optoplasmonic Chains Obtained by Directed Self-Assembly

Optoplasmonic structures contain plasmonic components embedded in a defined photonic environment to create synergistic interactions between photonic and plasmonic components. Here, we show that chains of optical microspheres containing gold nanoparticles in their evanescent field combine the light guiding properties of a microsphere chain with the light localizing properties of a plasmonic nanoantenna. We implement these materials through template guided self-assembly and investigate their fundamental electromagnetic working principles through combination of electromagnetic simulations and experimental characterization. We demonstrate that optoplasmonic chains implemented by directed self-assembly achieve a significant reduction in guiding losses when compared with conventional plasmonic waveguides and, at the same time, retain the light localizing properties of plasmonic antennas at pre-defined locations. The results reinforce the potential of optoplasmonic structures for realizing low-loss optical interconnects with high bandwidth.

Optical super-resolution imaging by high-index microspheres embedded in elastomers

We demonstrated feasibility of super-resolution imaging through high-index microspheres embedded in transparent elastomers. We performed imaging, with resolution improvement by a factor of two, by using implanted barium titanate glass microspheres (diameters ∼30-150  μm and refractive index ∼1.9-2.1) in a thin film of polydimethylsiloxane elastomer placed over the specimen. Microsphere-assisted imaging technique is a promising candidate for applications in cancer research. As a proof-of-principle, we used microsphere-assisted imaging technique for the observation of radiation-induced γ-H2AX foci formation in U87 human glioblastoma cells irradiated by clinical proton beams.

Formation of polarized beams in chains of dielectric spheres and cylinders

Using numerical modeling, it is shown that chains of dielectric spheres and cylinders act as polarizers. The mechanism is based on gradual filtering of periodically focused modes with a certain polarization propagating with minimal losses due to Brewster angles conditions, whereas orthogonally polarized modes are strongly attenuated. It is shown that chains of cylinders filter linearly polarized beams, whereas chains of spheres filter radially polarized beams. In the geometrical optics limit, we show that in a range of sphere refractive indices 1.68-1.80 a degree of radial polarization in excess of 0.9 can be obtained in 10-sphere-long chains.

Periodically focused modes in chains of dielectric spheres

We show that, theoretically, Brewster angle conditions for transverse magnetic polarized rays can be periodically reproduced in chains of spheres with index n = [Formula: see text] giving rise to lossless periodically focused modes with 2D period, where D is the sphere diameter. Using ray tracing for a spherical emitter with the diameter D we show that chains of spheres work as filters of such modes at 1.72 < n < 1.85. This leads to tapering of the focused beams combined with the reduction of their attenuation along the chain. Experimentally, the "beam tapering" effect was observed in chains of 300 μm sapphire spheres with index ∼1.77 in visible.

Collective phenomena in photonic, plasmonic and hybrid structures

Preface to a focus issue of invited articles that review recent progress in studying the fundamental physics of collective phenomena associated with coupling of confined photonic, plasmonic, electronic and phononic states and in exploiting these phenomena to engineer novel devices for light generation, optical sensing, and information processing.
