Propagation of Airy beams in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis

Interference enhancement effect in a single Airyprime beam propagating in free space

An analytical expression of a single Airyprime beam propagating in free space is derived. Upon propagation in free space, a single Airyprime beam in arbitrary transverse direction is the coherent superposition of the Airyprime and the Airy-related modes, which results in the interference enhancement effect under the appropriate condition. The Airy-related mode is the conventional propagating Airy mode with an additional π/2 phase shift and a weight coefficient of half the normalized propagation distance. Due to the peak light intensity in the initial plane being set to be 1, the strength of interference enhancement effect is characterized by the maximum light intensity. The maximum light intensity of a single Airyprime beam propagating in free space is independent of the scaling factor and is only decided by the exponential decay factor. When the exponential decay factor is above the saturated value, the interference enhancement effect disappears. When the exponential decay factor decreases from the saturated value, the maximum light intensity of a single propagating Airyprime beam increases, and the position of maximum light intensity is getting farther away. With the increase of the scaling factor, the position of maximum light intensity of a single propagating Airyprime beam is extended. The intensity distribution and the transverse Poynting vector of a single propagating Airyprime beam are demonstrated in different observation planes of free space. The flow direction of transverse energy flux effectively supports the interference enhancement effect of a single propagating Airyprime beam. The Airyprime beam is experimentally generated, and the interference enhancement effect is experimentally confirmed. The interference enhancement effect is conducive to the practical application of a single Airyprime beam.

Generation of finite energy Airyprime beams by Airy transformation

In this paper, the lone generation of a new kind of beam named finite energy Airyprime (FEA) beam through the Airy transformation of the coherent superposition of four different elegant Hermite-Gaussian modes is reported for the first time. Analytical expressions of the centroid, the r.m.s beam width, the divergence angle, and the beam propagation factor of the FEA beam are derived in the output plane of Airy transformation, respectively. The effects of the Airy control parameters on the intensity distribution, the centroid, the r.m.s beam width, and the beam propagation factor are examined in detail through numerical examples. Unlike the Airy beam, the FEA beam upon free space propagation will be associated with an additional Airy mode, and the beam pattern of the FEA beams propagating in free space will evolve into a solid beam spot with two tails along two transverse directions, as well as the the intensity of main lobe of the FEA beam decays much slowly during free space propagation. Further, an experiment setup is established to generate the FEA beam via Airy transformation of four mixed elegant Hermite-Gaussian modes. The propagation characteristics such as the intensity distribution, the r.m.s beam width and the beam propagation factor are measured. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions. Our study affords an effective and novel approach to generate the FEA beam, and is beneficial to expand the potential application of the FEA beam.

Propagation Characteristics of Circular Airy Vortex Beams in a Uniaxial Crystal along the Optical Axis

Circular airy vortex beams (CAVBs) have attracted much attention due to their “abruptly autofocusing” effect, phase singularity, and their potential applications in optical micromanipulation, communication, etc. In this paper, we numerically investigated the propagation properties of circular airy beams (CABs) imposed with different optical vortices (OVs) along the optical axis of a uniaxial crystal for the first time. Like other common beams, a left-hand circular polarized (LHCP) CAVB, propagating along the optical axis in a uniaxial crystal, can excite a right-hand circular polarized (RHCP) component superimposed with an on-axis vortex of topological charge (TC) number of 2. When the incident beam is an LHCP CAB imposed with an on-axis vortex of TC number of l = 1, both of the two components have an axisymmetric intensity distribution during propagation and form hollow beams near the focal plane because of the phase singularity. The phase pattern shows that the LHCP component carries an on-axis vortex of TC number of l = 1, while the RHCP component carries an on-axis vortex of TC number of l = 3. With a larger TC number (l = 3), the RHCP component has a larger hollow region in the focal plane compared to the LHCP component. We also studied cases of CABs imposed with one and two off-axis OVs. The off-axis OV makes the CAVB’s profile remain asymmetric throughout the propagation. As the propagation distance increases, the off-axis OVs move near the center of the beam and overlap, resulting in a special intensity and phase distribution near the focal plane.

Transformation of a Hermite-Gaussian beam by an Airy transform optical system

Analytical expression of the Airy transform of an arbitrary Hermite-Gaussian beam is derived. The optical field in the x-direction of the Airy transform of Hermite-Gaussian beams with transverse mode number m is the sum of the zero-order derivative to mth-order derivative of the Airy function with different weight coefficients. The analytical expressions of the centre of gravity and the beam spot size of an arbitrary Hermite-Gaussian beam passing through an Airy transform optical system are also presented, which are very concise. Because the Airy transform of a Hermite-Gaussian beam has the same evolution law in the two transverse directions, only the effects of the control parameter α and the transverse mode number m on the normalized intensity distribution, the centre of gravity, and the beam spot size in the x-direction are theoretically investigated, respectively. The Airy transform of Hermite-Gaussian beams is also realized in the experiment. The influence of the control parameters on the normalized intensity distribution, the centre of gravity, and the beam spot size is experimentally investigated, respectively. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical simulation results. When Hermite-Gaussian beams pass through an Airy transform optical system, the number of lobes may change, and the importance of lobes with the same status in the input plane may become different. By using the Airy transform of Hermite-Gaussian beams, the practical applications of Hermite-Gaussian beams can be extended.

Airy transform of Laguerre-Gaussian beams

Airy transform of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams is investigated. As typical examples, the analytic expressions for the Airy transform of LG₀₁, LG₀₂, LG₁₁, and LG₁₂ modes are derived, which are special optical beams including the Airy and Airyprime functions. Based on these analytical expressions, the Airy transform of LG₀₁, LG₀₂, LG₁₁, and LG₁₂ modes are numerically and experimentally investigated, respectively. The effects of the control parameters α and β on the normalized intensity distribution of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam passing through Airy transform optical systems are investigated, respectively. It is found that the signs of the control parameters only affect the location of the beam spot, while the sizes of the control parameters will affect the characteristics of the beam spot. When the absolute values of the control parameters α and β decrease, the number of the side lobes in the beam spot, the beam spot size, and the Airy feature decrease, while the Laguerre-Gaussian characteristic is strengthened. By altering the control parameters α and β, the performance of these special optical beams is diversified. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical simulations. The Airy transform of other Laguerre-Gaussian beams can be investigated in the same way. The properties of the Airy transform of Laguerre-Gaussian beams are well demonstrated. This research provides another approach to obtain special optical beams and expands the application of Laguerre-Gaussian beams.

Variable transformation of singular cylindrical vector beams using anisotropic crystals

We demonstrated and investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, the transformation of cylindrical vector beams with an embedded phase singularity under the condition of focusing perpendicularly to the axis of the anisotropic calcite crystal. Theoretical and numerical analysis, performed on the basis of decomposing the light field into a set of plane waves for an anisotropic medium, allowed us to study the dependence of the structural transformation of the initial laser beam on the polarisation and phase state in detail. The proposed approach allows one to perform the visual recognition of cylindrically-polarised vector beams of various orders and can be used for the demultiplexing of information channels in the case of polarisation-division multiplexing. The experimentally-obtained results agree with the theoretical findings and demonstrate the reliability of the approach.

Spin-orbital coupling of quadratic-power-exponent-phase vortex beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal

Recent studies have shown that quadratic-power-exponent-phase (QPEP) vortex and modified QPEP vortex have some novel properties and potential applications in optical manipulation, orbital angular momentum (OAM) communication, OAM multicasting and so on. In these applications, there may be potential need of processing these kinds of beams by using uniaxial crystals. In this paper, the analytical propagation equations of Gaussian QPEP vortex and modified QPEP vortex propagating in uniaxial crystals are derived and the evolution of the angular momentum via spin-orbital coupling during the propagation is investigated. This may be meaningful for guiding and promoting the applications of the QPEP vortex and modified QPEP vortex.

Propagation of Cosh-Airy and Cos-Airy Beams in Parabolic Potential

The analytical expressions of one-dimensional cosh-Airy and cos-Airy beams in the parabolic potential are derived in the general and the phase transition points. The expression in the phase transition point shows a symmetric Gaussian intensity profile and is independent of any Airy features, which is completely different from that in the general point. The intensity, the center of gravity, and the effective beam size of the cosh-Airy and cos-Airy beams in the parabolic potential are periodic and have the same period. The effects of the transverse displacement, the cosh factor, and the cosine factor on these periodic behaviors are also investigated. The direction of self-acceleration reverses every half-period. The phase transition point is also the inversion point of the intensity distribution, which indicates that the intensity distributions before and after the phase transition point are mirror symmetrical. The periodic behaviors of the normalized intensity, the center of gravity, and the effective beam size of the cosh-Airy and cos-Airy beams in the parabolic potential are attractive and well displayed. The results obtained here may have potential applications in particle manipulation, signal processing, and so on.

Propagation of the radially polarized Airy vortex beams in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis

We introduce the radially polarized Airy vortex beams (RPAiVBs) and analytically study their propagation in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis. We mainly discuss the effects of the vortex and the ratio of the extraordinary index (n_e) to the ordinary index (n_o) on the propagation properties of the RPAiVBs involving the intensity distributions, the maximum intensity, the radiation forces, the trajectory, and the velocity. The RPAiVBs evolve into the beams produced by the x direction electric field (RPAiXVB) and the y direction electric field (RPAiYVB). It is shown that with the increase in the order of the vortex, the maximum intensity and the radiation forces of the RPAiVBs are greatly enhanced; besides, the intensity focusing position of the RPAiVBs is farther. Furthermore, with the ratio of n_e to n_o increasing, the trajectory of the RPAiXVBs is farther from x=0  mm, and the acceleration is bigger in the x-z plane, but they are opposite in the y-z plane.

Beam Propagation Factor of a Cosh-Airy Beam

Based on the second-order moments, the analytical expression of the beam propagation factor of a cosh-Airy beam has been derived. The beam propagation factor was determined by the decay factor and the cosh parameter. Because the beam propagation factors in the x- and y-directions of the cosh-Airy beam have the same form, only the beam propagation factor in the x- direction was selected as the object of numerical calculation and analysis. The effects of the decay factor and the cosh parameter on the beam propagation factor were investigated. When the decay factor was greater than 1, the beam propagation factor first increased and then decreased with the increase of the cosh parameter, and finally, tended to a minimum value. Under the condition that the decay factor was less than 1, the beam propagation factor always increased with the increase of the cosh parameter. As the decay factor increased, the beam propagation factor decreased and tended to a minimum value. Finally, the effects of the decay factor and the cosh parameter on the squares of the beam waist and the divergence were analyzed in more detail.

Evolution properties of the radially polarized multi-Gaussian Schell-model beam in uniaxial crystals

The evolution properties of the normalized intensity distribution, the spectral degree of coherence (SDOC), and the spectral degree of polarization (SDOP) of the radially polarized multi-Gaussian Schell-model (MGSM) beam in uniaxial crystals are illustrated. Numerical results show that the intensity distribution of the radially polarized MGSM beam gradually evolves from a doughnut shape into an elliptical symmetric flattop shape and retains its elliptical flattop shape on further propagation in anisotropic crystals. The evolution behavior of the SDOC and SDOP for the radially polarized MGSM beam is quite different from that of the linearly polarized one. In addition, the influences of the spatial coherence length δ₀, beam index M, and the ratio of the extraordinary refractive index to the ordinary refractive index n_e/n_o of the uniaxial crystals on the evolution properties of the normalized intensity distribution, the SDOC, and the SDOP of the radially polarized MGSM beam are discussed in detail.

Paraxial propagation dynamics of the radially polarized Airy beams in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis

We study the paraxial propagation of the radially polarized Airy beams (RPAiBs) in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis analytically and numerically. The propagation trajectory, the intensity and the radiation forces of the RPAiBs are investigated and the properties are elucidated by numerical examples in this paper. Results show that the RPAiBs evolve into the beams produced by the x-direction electric field (RPAiXBs) and the y-direction electric field (PRAiYBs) which are totally different in uniaxial crystals. During the propagation, the intensity of the RPAiXBs transfers from the side lobe in the x-direction to the main lobe and finally returns to the side lobe in the x-direction again, but that of the RPAiYBs transfers from the side lobe in the y-direction to the main lobe and flows to the side lobe in the x-direction at last. The effect of the intensity focusing for the RPAiXBs can be modulated by the ratio of the extraordinary index (ne) to the ordinary index (no) in anisotropic medium, which contributes to the intensity focusing of the RPAiBs in a short distance a lot. We can adjust the intensity distribution especially the focusing position, the propagation trajectory and the radiation forces distributions of the RPAiXBs through choosing an appropriate value of the ratio of ne to no to meet the actual usage accordingly.

Complex Gaussian representations of partially coherent beams with nonconventional degrees of coherence

We adopt the recently introduced complex Gaussian function to expand the partially coherent beams with nonconventional degrees of coherence, and derive detailed representations of Hermite-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam, elliptical Laguerre-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam, and multi-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam. Complex Gaussian representation of a partially coherent beam provides a convenient way for treating its propagation. As an application example, we explore the self-splitting properties of a Hermite-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal with the help of the complex Gaussian representation, and it is found that the uniaxial crystal can be used to control the splitting properties.

Polarization-dependent effects of an Airy beam due to the spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the polarization-dependent effects when a circularly polarized Airy beam propagates in an inhomogeneous medium. It shows that there are some interesting polarization-dependent phenomena induced by the spin-orbit coupling: the circularly polarized Airy beam will follow a polarization-dependent trajectory in an inhomogeneous medium, and there are the polarization-dependent self-acceleration of the Airy beam in the linear-index inhomogeneous medium and the polarization-dependent rotation of the Airy beam in the quadratic-index inhomogeneous medium. These polarization-dependent phenomena are different from the manifestation of the "traditional" spin Hall effect of a light beam, which just displays the polarization-dependent transverse deflection of the beam.

Electro-optical coupling of a circular Airy beam in a uniaxial crystal

This paper investigates theoretically and numerically on the electro-optical coupling (EOC) for a circular Airy beam (CAB) propagating along the optical axis of a uniaxial crystal after deducing the wave coupling equations of EOC. For a circularly polarized incident CAB, EOC can be used to generate vortex beam by coupling the incident left-handed component into the right-handed vortex component with a vortex topological charge of 2. What's more, EOC plays important role in enhancing or suppressing the abrupt autofocusing, the most important property of CABs, for both left-handed and right-handed components. Near the focal plane, EOC can result in electrically controllable optical "needle" and "cage", which shall be interesting in micromanipulation. In addition, EOC can influence or even forbid the exchange between spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbit angular momentum (OAM). For a linearly polarized incident CAB, its two Cartesian field components of the beam cannot only couple their powers to each other, but also lead to the changes of the intensity pattern and polarization distributions. The polarization state becomes spatially inhomogeneous, and possesses vortex phase with a topological charge of 2 during propagation. EOC presents a new way to control an Airy beam fast and efficiently.

Propagation dynamics of a circular Airy beam in a uniaxial crystal

This paper investigates theoretically and numerically the propagation characteristics of a circular Airy beam (CAB) in a uniaxial crystal in detail. The beam loses its boundary cylindrical symmetry during propagation because of the medium anisotropy, although it propagates along the optical axis. This effect of anisotropy on the propagating beam becomes increasingly evident with the increase of the propagation distance. Another main influential factor of the propagation characteristics is the ratio of the extraordinary refractive index to the ordinary refractive index (n_e/n_o). The more the value deviates from 1, the worse the symmetry of the beam intensity distribution becomes. The polarization becomes notably complicated, but possesses a vortex state with a topological charge of 2 during propagation. The abruptly autofocusing characteristic, the most important property of CABs, also appears when the crystal length is long enough, which is greatly different from that characteristic in isotropic media. This work is helpful for the design of optical devices based on uniaxial crystals for beams with some special wavefronts.

Twist phase-induced changes of the statistical properties of a stochastic electromagnetic beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal

With the help of a tensor method, an analytical formula is derived for the cross-spectral density matrix of a twisted electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beam (i.e., EGSM beam with twist phase) propagating in a uniaxial crystal orthogonal to the optical axis. The twist phase-induced changes of the statistical properties, such as the spectral density, the degree of polarization and the degree of coherence, of an EGSM beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal are illustrated numerically. It is found that the distributions of the spectral density, the degree of polarization and the degree of coherence of a twisted EGSM beam in a uniaxial crystal all exhibit non-circular symmetries, which are quite different from those of a twisted EGSM beam in isotropic medium or in free space. One may use uniaxial crystal to determine whether an EGSM beam carries twist phase or not.

Evolution properties of a Laguerre-Gaussian correlated Schell-model beam propagating in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis

Analytical expressions for the cross-spectral density function and the second-order moments of a Laguerre-Gaussian correlated Schell-model (LGCSM) beam propagating in uniaxial crystals orthogonal to the optical axis are derived. Based on the formulas derived, we study the propagation properties, such as beam irradiance, beam diameters, and the spectral degree of coherence, of a LGCSM beam inside uniaxial crystals in detail. The effect of the initial beam parameters (mode order and spatial coherence length) and the parameters of the uniaxial crystals on the evolution properties of a LGCSM beam is revealed through numerical examples. The uniaxial crystals provide one way to modulate the properties of a LGCSM beam.

Second-order moments of an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam in a uniaxial crystal

We derive the analytical expressions for the second-order moments of an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beam propagating in a uniaxial crystal. With the help of the derived formulas, we study the evolution properties of the propagation factor, the effective radius of curvature and the Rayleigh range of an EGSM beam in a uniaxial crystal. It is found that the evolution properties of an EGSM beam in a uniaxial crystal are much different from its evolution properties in free space and are closely determined by the initial beam parameters and the parameters of the uniaxial crystal. The uniaxial crystal provides one way for modulating the properties of an EGSM beam.

Voigt Airy surface magneto plasmons

We present a basic theory on Airy surface magneto plasmons (SMPs) at the interface between a dielectric layer and a metal layer (or a doped semiconductor layer) under an external static magnetic field in the Voigt configuration. It is shown that, in the paraxial approximation, the Airy SMPs can propagate along the surface without violating the nondiffracting characteristics, while the ballistic trajectory of the Airy SMPs can be tuned by the applied magnetic field. In addition, the self-deflection-tuning property of the Airy SMPs depends on the direction of the external magnetic field applied, owing to the nonreciprocal effect.
