Narrow linewidth laser system realized by linewidth transfer using a fiber-based frequency comb for the magneto-optical trapping of strontium

Phase-Sensitive Vector Terahertz Electrometry from Precision Spectroscopy of Molecular Ions

This article proposes a new method for sensing THz waves that can allow electric field measurements traceable to the International System of Units and to the fundamental physical constants by using the comparison between precision measurements with cold trapped HD+ ions and accurate predictions of molecular ion theory. The approach exploits the lightshifts induced on the two-photon rovibrational transition at 55.9 THz by a THz wave around 1.3 THz, which is off-resonantly coupled to the HD+ fundamental rotational transition. First, the direction and the magnitude of the static magnetic field applied to the ion trap is calibrated using Zeeman spectroscopy of HD+. Then, a set of lightshifts are converted into the amplitudes and the phases of the THz electric field components in an orthogonal laboratory frame by exploiting the sensitivity of the lightshifts to the intensity, the polarization and the detuning of the THz wave to the HD+ energy levels. The THz electric field measurement uncertainties are estimated for quantum projection noise-limited molecular ion frequency measurements with the current accuracy of molecular ion theory. The method has the potential to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of electric field metrology and may be extended to THz magnetic fields and to optical fields.

Sub-kHz-linewidth VECSELs for cold atom experiments

We report and characterize sub-kHz linewidth operation of an AlGaInP-based VECSEL system suitable for addressing the narrow cooling transition of neutral strontium atoms at 689 nm. When frequency-stabilized to a standard air-spaced Fabry-Perot cavity (finesse 1000) via the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique, it delivers output power >150 mW in a circularly-symmetric single transverse mode with low frequency and intensity noise. The optical field was reconstructed from the frequency noise error signal via autocorrelation and the Wiener-Khintchine theorem, leading to an estimated linewidth of (125 ± 2) Hz. Optical beat note measurements were performed against a commercial locked laser system and a second, almost identical, VECSEL system resulting in linewidths of 200 Hz and 160 Hz FWHM, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a VECSEL compatible with the narrowest of lines (few hundred Hz) used for cooling and trapping atoms and ions.

Characterization and applications of auto-locked vacuum-sealed diode lasers for precision metrology

We demonstrate the performance characteristics of a new class of vacuum-sealed, autolocking diode laser systems and their applications to precision metrology. The laser is based on adaptations of a design that uses optical feedback from an interference filter and it includes a vacuum-sealed cavity, an interchangeable base-plate, and an autolocking digital controller. A change of the base-plate allows operation at desired wavelengths in the visible and near infrared spectral range, whereas the autolocking ability allows the laser to be tuned and frequency stabilized with respect to atomic, molecular, and solid-state resonances without human intervention using a variety of control algorithms programmed into the same controller. We characterize the frequency stability of this laser system based on the Allan deviation (ADEV) of the beat note and of the lock signal. We find that the ADEV floor of 2 × 10^-12 and short-term linewidth of ∼200 kHz are strongly influenced by current noise and vacuum sealing. Reducing the current noise and cavity pressure decreases the ADEV floor and increases the averaging time at which the floor occurs, which is a signature of long-term stability. We also show that evacuating the cavity to ∼1 Torr reduces the range of the correction signal of the feedback loop by approximately one order of magnitude, thereby increasing the lock range of the controller. The long-term stability allows the laser to be incorporated into a commercial gravimeter for accurate measurements of gravitational acceleration at the level of a few parts-per-billion, which are comparable to values obtained with an iodine-stabilized He-Ne laser. The autolocking and pattern-matching features of the controller allow the laser to be tuned and stabilized with respect to a temperature tunable transmission spectrum of a fiber-Bragg grating. This capability may be suitable for the development of a differential absorption LIDAR transmitter that can generate data at both on-line and off-line lock points using a single laser.

Optical frequency stabilization with a synchronous frequency-to-voltage converter

Between a frequency comb mode and a continuous-wave (cw) laser, we demonstrate that a frequency-to-voltage converter can be used to transfer frequency instability in the 10^-14 range for integration times τ between 0.25 and 2100 s. The technique is relevant when the optical beat between laser signals is weak and a high level of frequency stability is required both in the short term and long term, as in the case of laser cooling with very narrow transitions. The impressive stability transfer arises through the use of a synchronous voltage-to-frequency converter that relies on an external CMOS oscillator. Aided by an atomic reference to the frequency comb, the method grants long-term stability to the cw laser, superior to that achieved with most optical cavities.

Development of 8-branch Er:fiber frequency comb for Sr and Yb optical lattice clocks

We demonstrate an 8-branch Er:fiber frequency comb with seven application ports, which can be individually optimized for applications with different wavelengths. The beat between the comb and a cw laser has a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 30 dB at a resolution bandwidth of 300 kHz. The 8-branch frequency comb is used to perform frequency locking for four repumping and lattice lasers, and the frequency measurement of two clock lasers of strontium and ytterbium optical lattice clocks. We have achieved reliable optical lattice clock operation, thanks to the stable frequency locking and measurement obtained by using the 8-branch frequency comb. The developed frequency comb is a powerful experimental tool for various applications, including not only optical lattice clocks, but also research on quantum optics that use many frequency-stabilized lasers.

Magnon-induced transparency and amplification in 𝒫𝒯-symmetric cavity-magnon system

Recent research on parity-time- (𝒫𝒯-) symmetric optical structures have exhibited great potential for achieving distinctive optical behaviour which is unattainable with ordinary optical systems. Here we propose a 𝒫𝒯-symmetric cavity-magnon system consisting of active cavity mode strongly interacting with magnon to study magnon-induced transparency (MIT) and amplification (MIA) by exploiting recent microwave-cavity-engineered ferromagnetic magnons. We find that (i) due to the gain-induced enhancement of coherent coupling between the cavity field and the magnon, the transmitted probe power is remarkably enhanced about four orders of magnitude and the bandwidth also becomes much narrower, compared to passive cavity system. (ii) More importantly, the light transmission can be well controlled by adjusting the applied magnetic field without changing other parameters, and a Lorentzian-like spectra can be established between the transmitted probe power and the external magnetic field, which provides an additional degree of freedom to realize the coherent manipulation of optical transparency and amplification. Our results may offer an approach to make a low-power magnetic-field-controlled optical amplifier in 𝒫𝒯-symmetric cavity-magnon system.

Dual-Mode Operation of an Optical Lattice Clock Using Strontium and Ytterbium Atoms

We have developed an optical lattice clock that can operate in dual modes: a strontium (Sr) clock mode and an ytterbium (Yb) clock mode. Dual-mode operation of the Sr-Yb optical lattice clock is achieved by alternately cooling and trapping ⁸⁷Sr and ¹⁷¹Yb atoms inside the vacuum chamber of the clock. Optical lattices for Sr and Yb atoms were arranged with horizontal and vertical configurations, respectively, resulting in a small distance of the order of between the trapped Sr and Yb atoms. The ¹S₀-³P₀ clock transitions in the trapped atoms were interrogated in turn and the clock lasers were stabilized to the transitions. We demonstrated the frequency ratio measurement of the Sr and Yb clock transitions by using the dual-mode operation of the Sr-Yb optical lattice clock. The dual-mode operation can reduce the uncertainty of the blackbody radiation shift in the frequency ratio measurement, because both Sr and Yb atoms share the same blackbody radiation.

Enhancement of the performance of a fiber-based frequency comb by referencing to an acetylene-stabilized fiber laser

We demonstrate a significant improvement in the performance of a fiber-based frequency comb when a GPS-disciplined Rb clock is replaced with an acetylene-stabilized laser as the frequency reference. We have developed a compact, maintenance-free acetylene-stabilized fiber laser with a sub-kHz short-term linewidth and an Allan deviation below 3×10^-13 for integration times above 1 s. Switching the comb reference from the Rb clock to the acetylene-stabilized laser improves both comb tooth linewidth and Allan deviation by about two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, long-term measurements of the acetylene-stabilized laser frequency with reference to the GPS-disciplined clock indicate a potential relative frequency uncertainty of 2 × 10^-12.

Sub-kilohertz laser linewidth narrowing using polarization spectroscopy

We identify several beneficial characteristics of polarization spectroscopy as an absolute atomic reference for frequency stabilization of lasers, and demonstrate sub-kilohertz laser spectral linewidth narrowing using polarization spectroscopy with high-bandwidth feedback. Polarization spectroscopy provides a highly dispersive velocity-selective absolute atomic reference based on frequency-dependent birefringence in an optically pumped atomic gas. The pumping process leads to dominance of the primary closed transition, suppressing closely-spaced subsidiary resonances which reduce the effective capture range for conventional atomic references. The locking signal is based on subtraction of two orthogonal polarization signals, reducing the effect of laser intensity noise to the shot noise limit. We measure noise-limited servo bandwidth comparable to that of a high-finesse optical cavity without the frequency limit or complexity imposed by optical modulation normally associated with high bandwidth laser frequency stabilization. We demonstrate narrowing to 600±100 Hz laser linewidth using the beatnote between two similarly locked external cavity diode lasers.

Second harmonic generation at 399 nm resonant on the 1S0-1P1 transition of ytterbium using a periodically poled LiNbO3 waveguide

We demonstrate a compact and robust method for generating a 399-nm light resonant on the ¹S₀ - ¹P₁ transition in ytterbium using a single-pass periodically poled LiNbO₃ waveguide for second harmonic generation (SHG). The obtained output power at 399 nm was 25 mW when a 798-nm fundamental power of 380 mW was coupled to the waveguide. We observed no degradation of the SHG power for 13 hours with a low power of 6 mW. The obtained SHG light has been used as a seed light for injection locking, which provides sufficient power for laser cooling ytterbium.

High-bandwidth transfer of phase stability through a fiber frequency comb

We demonstrate phase locking of a 729 nm diode laser to a 1542 nm master laser via an erbium-doped-fiber frequency comb, using a transfer-oscillator feedforward scheme which suppresses the effect of comb noise in an unprecedented 1.8 MHz bandwidth. We illustrate its performance by carrying out coherent manipulations of a trapped calcium ion with 99 % fidelity even at few-μs timescales. We thus demonstrate that transfer-oscillator locking can provide sufficient phase stability for high-fidelity quantum logic manipulation even without pre-stabilization of the slave diode laser.

Frequency ratio measurement of 171Yb and 87Sr optical lattice clocks

The frequency ratio of the (1)S(0)(F = 1/2)-(3)P(0)(F = 1/2) clock transition in (171)Yb and the (1)S(0)(F = 9/2)-(3)P(0)(F = 9/2) clock transition in (87)Sr is measured by an optical-optical direct frequency link between two optical lattice clocks. We determined the ratio (ν(Yb)/ν(Sr)) to be 1.207 507 039 343 341 2(17) fractional standard uncertainty of 1.4 × 10(-15) [corrected]. The measurement uncertainty of the frequency ratio is smaller than that obtained from absolute frequency measurements using the International Atomic Time (TAI) link. The measured ratio agrees well with that derived from the absolute frequency measurement results obtained at NIST and JILA, Boulder, CO using their Cs-fountain clock. Our measurement enables the first international comparison of the frequency ratios of optical clocks. The measured frequency ratio will be reported to the International Committee for Weights and Measures for a discussion related to the redefinition of the second.

4.8 μm difference-frequency generation using a waveguide-PPLN crystal and its application to mid-infrared Lamb-dip spectroscopy

Difference-frequency generation of 4.8 μm mid-infrared light was performed using a waveguide periodically poled LiNbO₃ (PPLN) crystal. 871 and 1064 nm external-cavity diode lasers followed by tapered amplifiers were used as pump sources. A conversion efficiency of ~2%/W with the output power of 2 mW was achieved even under considerable absorption of the crystal at this wavelength. Lamb-dip spectroscopy of carbonyl sulfide was demonstrated showing the satisfactory performance of this device for saturation spectroscopy. The observed dip width shows that the laser linewidth is ~2 MHz, which corresponds to those of the pump lasers.

Spectroscopy of 171Yb in an optical lattice based on laser linewidth transfer using a narrow linewidth frequency comb

We propose a novel, high-performance, and practical laser source system for optical clocks. The laser linewidth of a fiber-based frequency comb is reduced by phase locking a comb mode to an ultrastable master laser at 1064 nm with a broad servo bandwidth. A slave laser at 578 nm is successively phase locked to a comb mode at 578 nm with a broad servo bandwidth without any pre-stabilization. Laser frequency characteristics such as spectral linewidth and frequency stability are transferred to the 578-nm slave laser from the 1064-nm master laser. Using the slave laser, we have succeeded in observing the clock transition of (171)Yb atoms confined in an optical lattice with a 20-Hz spectral linewidth.
