Resolution enhancement for fiber bundle imaging using maximum a posteriori estimation

We propose a new framework to jointly improve spatial resolution and remove fixed structural patterns for coherent fiber bundle imaging systems, based on inverting a principled forward model. The forward model maps a high-resolution representation to multiple images modeling random probe motions. We then apply a point spread function to simulate low-resolution figure bundle image capture. Our forward model also uses a smoothing prior. We compute a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate of the high-resolution image from one or more low-resolution images using conjugate gradient descent. Unique aspects of our approach include (1) supporting a variety of possible applicable transformations; (2) applying principled forward modeling and MAP estimation to this domain. We test our method on data synthesized from the USAF target, data captured from a transmissive USAF target, and data from lens tissue. In the case of the USAF target and 16 low-resolution captures, spatial resolution is enhanced by a factor of 2.8.

Ultrathin endoscopes based on multicore fibers and adaptive optics: a status review and perspectives

We take stock of the progress that has been made into developing ultrathin endoscopes assisted by wave front shaping. We focus our review on multicore fiber-based lensless endoscopes intended for multiphoton imaging applications. We put the work into perspective by comparing with alternative approaches and by outlining the challenges that lie ahead.

Widefield lensless imaging through a fiber bundle via speckle correlations

Flexible fiber-optic endoscopes provide a solution for imaging at depths beyond the reach of conventional microscopes. Current endoscopes require focusing and/or scanning mechanisms at the distal end, which limit miniaturization, frame-rate, and field of view. Alternative wavefront-shaping based lensless solutions are extremely sensitive to fiber-bending. We present a lensless, bend-insensitive, single-shot imaging approach based on speckle-correlations in fiber bundles that does not require wavefront shaping. Our approach computationally retrieves the target image by analyzing a single camera frame, exploiting phase information that is inherently preserved in propagation through convnetional fiber bundles. Unlike conventional fiber-based imaging, planar objects can be imaged at variable working distances, the resulting image is unpixelated and diffraction-limited, and miniaturization is limited only by the fiber diameter.

Optical brush: Imaging through permuted probes

The combination of computational techniques and ultrafast imaging have enabled sensing through unconventional settings such as around corners, and through diffusive media. We exploit time of flight (ToF) measurements to enable a flexible interface for imaging through permuted set of fibers. The fibers are randomly distributed in the scene and are packed on the camera end, thus making a brush-like structure. The scene is illuminated by two off-axis optical pulses. Temporal signatures of fiber tips in the scene are used to localize each fiber. Finally, by combining the position and measured intensity of each fiber, the original input is reconstructed. Unlike conventional fiber bundles with packed set of fibers that are limited by a narrow field of view (FOV), lack of flexibility, and extended coaxial precalibration, the proposed optical brush is flexible and uses off-axis calibration method based on ToF. The enabled brush form can couple to other types of ToF imaging systems. This can impact probe-based applications such as, endoscopy, tomography, and industrial imaging and sensing.
