The role of gap plasmons in light emission from tunnel junctions

Tuning Overbias Plasmon Energy and Intensity in Molecular Plasmonic Tunneling Junctions by Atomic Polarizability

Plasmon excitation in molecular tunnel junctions is interesting because the plasmonic properties of the device can be, in principle, controlled by varying the chemical structure of the molecules. The plasmon energy of the excited plasmons usually follows the quantum cutoff law, but frequently overbias plasmon energy has been observed, which can be explained by quantum shot noise, multielectron processes, or hot carrier models. So far, clear correlations between molecular structure and the plasmon energy have not been reported. Here, we introduce halogenated molecules (HS(CH2)12X, with X = H, F, Cl, Br, or I) with polarizable terminal atoms as the tunnel barriers and demonstrate molecular control over both the excited plasmon intensity and energy for a given applied voltage. As the polarizability of the terminal atom increases, the tunnel barrier height decreases, resulting in an increase in the tunneling current and the plasmon intensity without changing the tunneling barrier width. We also show that the plasmon energy is controlled by the electrostatic potential drop at the molecule-electrode interface, which depends on the polarizability of the terminal atom and the metal electrode material (Ag, Au, or Pt). Our results give new insights in the relation between molecular structure, electronic structure of the molecular junction, and the plasmonic properties which are important for the development of molecular scale plasmonic-electronic devices.

An electrically induced probe of the modes of a plasmonic multilayer stack

A new single-image acquisition technique for the determination of the dispersion relation of the propagating modes of a plasmonic multilayer stack is introduced. This technique is based on an electrically-driven, spectrally broad excitation source which is nanoscale in size: the inelastic electron tunnel current between the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and the sample. The resulting light from the excited modes of the system is collected in transmission using a microscope objective. The energy-momentum dispersion relation of the excited optical modes is then determined from the angle-resolved optical spectrum of the collected light. Experimental and theoretical results are obtained for metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stacks consisting of a silicon oxide layer (70, 190 or 310 nm thick) between two gold films (each with a thickness of 30 nm). The broadband characterization of hybrid plasmonic-photonic transverse magnetic (TM) modes involved in an avoided crossing is demonstrated and the advantages of this new technique over optical reflectivity measurements are evaluated.

Novel routes to electromagnetic enhancement and its characterisation in surface- and tip-enhanced Raman scattering

Quantitative understanding of the electromagnetic component in enhanced Raman spectroscopy is often difficult to achieve on account of the complex substrate structures utilised. We therefore turn to two structurally simple systems amenable to detailed modelling. The first is tip-enhanced Raman scattering under electron scanning tunnelling microscopy control (STM-TERS) where, appealing to understanding developed in the context of photon emission from STM, it is argued that the localised surface plasmon modes driving the Raman enhancement exist in the visible and near-infrared regime only by virtue of significant modification to the optical properties of the tip and sample metals (gold here). This is due to the strong dc field-induced (∼10⁹ V m^-1) non-linear corrections to the dielectric function of gold via the third order susceptibility term in the polarisation. Also, sub-5 nm spatial resolution is shown in the modelling. Secondly, we suggest a novel deployment of hybrid plasmonic waveguide modes in surface enhanced Raman scattering (HPWG-SERS). This delivers strong confinement of electromagnetic energy in a ∼10 nm oxide 'gap' between a high-index dielectric material of nanoscale width (a GaAs nanorod and a 100 nm Si slab are considered here) and a metal, yielding a monotonic variation in the Raman enhancement factor as a function of wavelength with no long-wavelength cut-off, both features that contrast with STM-TERS.

Scanning tunnelling microscope light emission: Finite temperature current noise and over cut-off emission

The spectral distribution of light emitted from a scanning tunnelling microscope junction not only bears its intrinsic plasmonic signature but is also imprinted with the characteristics of optical frequency fluc- tuations of the tunnel current. Experimental spectra from gold-gold tunnel junctions are presented that show a strong bias (V _b ) dependence, curiously with emission at energies higher than the quantum cut-off (eV _b ); a component that decays monotonically with increasing bias. The spectral evolution is explained by developing a theoretical model for the power spectral density of tunnel current fluctuations, incorporating finite temperature contribution through consideration of the quantum transport in the system. Notably, the observed decay of the over cut-off emission is found to be critically associated with, and well explained in terms of the variation in junction conductance with V _b . The investigation highlights the scope of plasmon-mediated light emission as a unique probe of high frequency fluctuations in electronic systems that are fundamental to the electrical generation and control of plasmons.

Nanoantenna for Electrical Generation of Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Light emission by inelastic tunneling has been known for many years. Recently, this technique has been used to generate surface plasmons using a scanning tunneling microscope tip. The emission process suffers from a very low efficiency lower than a photon in 10^{4} electrons. We introduce a resonant plasmonic nanoantenna that allows both enhancing the power conversion to surface plasmon polaritons by more than 2 orders of magnitude and narrowing the emission spectrum. The physics of the emission process is analyzed in terms of local density of states and the efficiency of the nanoantenna to radiate surface plasmon polaritons.

Focus issue on surface plasmon photonics introduction

The 6th International Conference on Surface Plasmon Photonics (SPP6) was held in Ottawa, Canada from May 26th to 31st, 2013. This independent series of biennial conferences is widely regarded as the premier series in the field, and the 6th edition maintained the tradition of excellence. This Focus Issue collects several papers related to research presented at SPP6, and although the number of papers it comprises is small compared to the total number of papers presented at the conference, the issue is representative and provides a good snapshot of the field at this point in time.
