Unusual Otto excitation dynamics and enhanced coupling of light to TE plasmons in graphene

Utilization of smartphones for the evaluation of Gr/Ni nanostructures magnetically controlled based on optical fibers surface plasmons

In the suggested optical fiber-based magnetoplasmonic system, we investigated the magnetic properties of graphene/nickel nanostructures. The plasmonic mode changes under the magnetic field observed in the intensity diagrams over time. To be accessible, cheap, and portable, we used a smartphone as a detector and processor. Considering the ambient noise and the light source, it was reported that the intensity of the changes improved up to 5 times. Further, the clad corrosion experiment carried out by pure dimethyl ketone in an intensity modulation by a smartphone camera and 10 seconds suggested removing fluorine polymer clad.

Excitation of graphene surface plasmons polaritons by guided-mode resonances with high efficiency

An Otto-like configuration for the excitation of graphene surface plasmon polaritons (GSPPs) is proposed. The configuration is composed of a metallic grating-dielectric-waveguide structure and a monolayer graphene with a subwavelength vacuum gap between them. The evanescent field located at the bottom surface of the dielectric waveguide corresponding to grating-coupled guided-mode resonances (GMRs) is utilized to efficiently excite the highly confined GSPPs. The finite difference time domain method is used to investigate the behaviors of the GMR-GSPP hybrid modes. The dispersion relations of GMRs and GSPPs are calculated and the numerical results further identify the excitation of GMR-GSPP hybrid modes. By changing the gap between the graphene layer and the bottom of the dielectric waveguide and the Fermi energy of graphene, the resonant frequencies of GMR-GSPP hybrid modes can be continuously tuned. When the optimized excitation condition is satisfied, the maximum energy enhancement factor in the gap can reach about 500 at the resonant frequencies. The proposed structure can be used to realize highly sensitive, compatible with planar fabrication technology, and electrically (mechanically) tunable sensors.

Transverse electric surface mode in atomically thin Boron-Nitride

The spatial confinement and the propagation length of surface waves in a single-layer two-dimensional atomic crystal are analyzed in terms of its surface susceptibility and its surface conductivity. Based on the values of these macroscopic parameters, extracted from experimental observations, it is confirmed that graphene supports a transverse magnetic nonradiating surface mode in the ultraviolet spectral region while a single-layer hexagonal Boron-Nitride is predicted to support a transverse electric nonradiating surface mode in the visible spectrum. This last mode, at a vacuum wavelength of 633 nm, has a spatial confinement of 15 μm and an intensity-propagation distance greater than 2 cm.

Direct Optical Probing of Transverse Electric Mode in Graphene

Unique electrodynamic response of graphene implies a manifestation of an unusual propagating and localised transverse-electric (TE) mode near the spectral onset of interband transitions. However, excitation and further detection of the TE mode supported by graphene is considered to be a challenge for it is extremely sensitive to excitation environment and phase matching condition adherence. Here for the first time, we experimentally prove an existence of the TE mode by its direct optical probing, demonstrating significant coupling to an incident wave in electrically doped multilayer graphene sheet at room temperature. We believe that proposed technique of careful phase matching and obtained access to graphene's TE excitation would stimulate further studies of this unique phenomenon, and enable its potential employing in various fields of photonics as well as for characterization of graphene.

TE-polarized graphene modes sustained by photonic crystal structures

We present the design of a supporting photonic crystal structure that would allow for the excitation of the predicted transverse electric (TE) polarized excitation in a single layer of graphene. We show that it is possible to measure this excitation at room temperature, and that adding an extra layer of dielectric material on top of the structure would further facilitate the experimental observation of the graphene mode.

Graphene enhanced evanescent field in microfiber multimode interferometer for highly sensitive gas sensing

Graphene based new physics phenomena are leading to a variety of stimulating graphene-based photonic devices. In this study, the enhancement of surface evanescent field by graphene cylindrical cladding is observed, for the first time, by using a graphene-coated microfiber multi-mode interferometer (GMMI). It is found theoretically and experimentally that the light transmitting in the fiber core is efficiently dragged by the graphene, hence significantly enhancing the evanescent fields, and subsequently improving the sensitivity of the hybrid waveguide. The experimental results for gas sensing verified the theoretical prediction, and ultra-high sensitivities of ~0.1 ppm for NH(3) gas detection and ~0.2 ppm for H(2)O vapor detection are achieved, which could be used for trace analysis. The enhancement of surface evanescent field induced by graphene may pave a new way for developing novel graphene-based all-fiber devices with compactness, low cost, and temperature immunity.
