Passive synchronization of erbium and thulium doped fiber mode-locked lasers enhanced by common graphene saturable absorber

Temporal soliton dynamics of synchronised ultrafast fibre lasers

Synchronised ultrafast soliton lasers have attracted great research interest in recent decades. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the buildup mechanism of synchronised pulses. Here, we report a dynamic analysis of independent and synchronised solitons buildup mechanisms in synchronised ultrafast soliton lasers. The laser comprises an erbium-doped fibre cavity and a thulium-doped fibre cavity bridged with a common arm. Pulses operating at two different wavelengths formed in the cavities are synchronised by cross-phase modulation-induced soliton correlation in the common fibre arm. We find that the whole buildup process of the thulium-doped fibre laser successively undergoes five different stages: continuous wave, relaxation oscillation, quasi-mode-locking, continuous wave mode-locking and synchronised mode-locking. It is found that the starting time of the synchronised solitons is mainly determined by the meeting time of dual-color solitons. Our results will further deepen the understanding of dual-color synchronised lasers and enrich the study of complex nonlinear system dynamics.

Synchronized triple-wavelength fiber lasers at 1, 1.55, and 1.9 µm

Synchronized lasers working at different wavelengths are of great significance for numerous applications, such as high-energy femtosecond pulse emission, Raman microscopy, and precise timing distribution. Here, we report synchronized triple-wavelength fiber lasers working at 1, 1.55, and 1.9 µm, respectively, by combining the coupling and injection configurations. The laser system consists of three fiber resonators gained by ytterbium-doped fiber, erbium-doped fiber, and thulium-doped fiber, respectively. Ultrafast optical pulses formed in these resonators are obtained by passive mode-locking with the use of a carbon-nanotube saturable absorber. A maximum cavity mismatch of ∼1.4 mm is reached by the synchronized triple-wavelength fiber lasers in the synchronization regime by finely tuning the variable optical delay lines incorporated in the fiber cavities. In addition, we investigate the synchronization characteristics of a non-polarization-maintaining fiber laser in an injection configuration. Our results provide a new, to the best of our knowledge, perspective on multi-color synchronized ultrafast lasers with broad spectral coverage, high compactness, and a tunable repetition rate.

1.3/1.4 µm dual-wave band dissipative soliton resonance in a passively mode-locked Bi-doped phosphosilicate fiber laser

We report the 1.3/1.4 µm dual-wave band dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) in a passively mode-locked bismuth-doped phosphosilicate fiber (Bi-PSF) laser. The low-water-peak Bi-PSF with two bismuth active centers associated with silicon and phosphorus supports the O+E-band gain. Using a 1239 nm home-made Raman fiber laser as pump source and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror for initiating mode-locking, stable DSR operation at 1343 and 1406 nm is achieved with the spectral bandwidth of 12 and 16 nm. The pulse duration with the pump power increases from 62 to 270 ps with a repetition frequency of 4.069 MHz. The average power is 11.05 mW corresponding to the maximum energy of 2.7 nJ. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of a mode-locked fiber laser in the ∼1.38 µm water absorption band and the O+E dual-wave band operation for applications in all-spectral-band communications, bio-medical imaging, and terahertz difference frequency generation.

High-precision passive stabilization of repetition rate for a mode-locked fiber laser based on optical pulse injection

We have proposed and implemented a novel scheme to obtain high-precision repetition rate stabilization for a polarization-maintaining mode-locked fiber laser. The essential technique lies in the periodic injection of electronically modulated optical pulses into a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror within the laser resonator. Thanks to the nonlinear cross-phase modulation effect, the injected pulses referenced to an external clock serves as a stable and precise timing trigger for an effective intensity modulator. Consequently, synchronous mode-locking can be initiated to output ultrafast pulses with a passively stabilized repetition rate. The capture range of the locking system reaches to a record of 1 mm, which enables a long-term stable operation over 15 hours without the need of temperature stabilization and vibration isolation. Meanwhile, the achieved standard deviation is as low as 100 μHz with a 1-s sample time, corresponding to a fluctuation instability of 5.0×10^-12. Additionally, the repetition rate stabilization performance based on the passive synchronization has been systematically investigated by varying the average power, central wavelength and pulse duration of the optical injection.

High-power synchronous multi-wavelength solitons from a multimode mode-locked fiber laser system

In this Letter, we implement a multimode fiber (MMF) laser system mode-locked by a nonlinear polarization rotation technique for controllable synchronous multi-wavelength soliton generation. The synchronization of the repetition rates for different wavelengths is realized by the special mode transmission in MMF. For dual-wavelength mode-locking at 1566.7 nm and 1617.2 nm, each of the synchronously mode-locked solitons consists of a train of quasi-periodic beat pulses with a pulse width of 84 fs and period of 162 fs. The total output power reaches 532 mW with optimally balanced two-color intensities. Furthermore, switchable dual- and tri-wavelength synchronized femtosecond pulses are also obtained. In contrast to previous reports, this synchronously mode-locked multi-wavelength is output directly from a laser oscillator, which provides a simpler candidate to achieve pulse synchronization.

Carbon nanotube-synchronized dual-color fiber laser for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy

In this Letter, we present a passively synchronized dual-color fiber laser at 1.03 and 1.53 µm for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. This fiber laser consists of both Yb- and Er-doped laser cavities, combined by an ∼1.2m common branch with a single-walled carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorber. Stable passively synchronized mode-locked state is obtained within a total cavity length mismatch of 50 µm. We demonstrate the capability of the synchronized dual-color fiber laser for CARS spectroscopy in both low- and high-wavenumber regions, with a resolution of 6.6cm^-1. Furthermore, a CARS image in the field of view 150×60µm² of polystyrene at the Raman shift of 3041cm^-1 has also been achieved. The results show the feasibility of our passively synchronized dual-color fiber laser to be employed as a stable and low-cost ultrafast laser source for CARS.

Passively synchronized mode-locked fiber lasers for coherent anti-Stokes Raman imaging

We have proposed and implemented a polarization-maintaining passively synchronized fiber laser system, which could deliver tunable dual-color picosecond pulses by including a frequency-doubling module and a spectral broadening module. Specifically, the output from the involved Er-doped fiber laser were used to generate second-harmonic pulses at 790 nm with a quadratic nonlinear crystal. In parallel, the amplified pulses from the synchronized Yb-doped fiber laser were launched into a 150-m single mode fiber, which resulted in not only substantial spectral bandwidth broadening from 0.1 to 20.1 nm, but also a significant Raman-induced signal around 1080 nm. Consequently, narrow spectra from 1018-1051 nm and 1070-1095 nm could be continuously tuned via a tunable bandpass filter, corresponding to Raman bonds from 2835-3143 cm^-1 and 3312-3525 cm^-1. Finally, the achieved tunable synchronized pulses enabled us to microscopically examine mouse ear samples based on coherent anti-Stokes Raman and second harmonic generation imaging. Therefore, our tunable passively-synchronized fiber laser system would be promising to provide a simple and compact laser source for subsequent coherent Raman microscopy.

Nonlinear multimode interference-based dual-color mode-locked fiber laser

We present a dual-color-soliton fiber laser at two different wavebands by nonlinear multimode interference. A saturable absorber (SA) with single-mode-multimode (MMF)-single-mode fiber structure is placed in the common branch shared by two sub-cavities. Saturable absorption effects can be simultaneously satisfied at 1.5 and 2 µm at a proper length of the MMF. Dual-color solitons can still remain, even by slightly tuning the length of the MMF. The periodical characteristic of this SA provides a flexible choice of MMF length, making it simple for simultaneous mode locking (SML) at two separate wavebands in practice. Our approach not only paves the way for SML at two or more wavebands by the MMF but also could lead to significant applications in pump-probe spectroscopy.

Passively synchronized dual-color mode-locked fiber lasers based on nonlinear amplifying loop mirrors

We have proposed and implemented a scheme for passive all-optical synchronization between erbium and ytterbium mode-locked fiber lasers. The passive locking of repetition rates for the dual-color pulses was realized by cross-phase modulation within phase-biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirrors. In contrast to previous demonstrations, the synchronization system was configured in an all-polarization-maintaining structure, thus gaining substantially improved stability and robustness. Consequently, the maximum tolerance of a cavity-length mismatch of 16.2 mm was achieved unprecedentedly, which was at least one order of magnitude longer than previously reported results for comparable temporal durations of involved pulses. The corresponding relative timing jitter was measured to be 31 fs within a 1 MHz bandwidth. Such a tight and robust synchronization fiber laser system offers great potential for various applications such as pump-probe microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, and nonlinear frequency generation.

Active synchronization and modulation of fiber lasers with a graphene electro-optic modulator

We report the synchronization of two actively Q-switched fiber lasers operating at 1.5 μm and 2 μm with a shared broadband graphene electro-optic modulator. Two graphene monolayer sheets separated with a high-kHfO₂ dielectric layer are configured to enable broadband light modulation. The graphene electro-optic modulator is shared by two optical fiber laser cavities (i.e., an erbium-doped fiber laser cavity and a thulium/holmium-codoped fiber laser cavity) to actively Q-switch the two lasers, resulting in stable synchronized pulses at 1.5 μm and 2 μm with a repetition rate ranging from 46 kHz to 56 kHz.

Dual-wavelength, mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser employing a graphene/polymethyl-methacrylate saturable absorber

Mode-locked fiber laser incorporating a saturable absorber is an attractive configuration due to its stability and simple structure. In this work, we demonstrate a dual-wavelength passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser employing a graphene/polymethyl-methacrylate saturable absorber. A laser resonator is developed based on dual cavity architecture with unidirectional signal oscillation, which is connected by a fiber branch sharing a common gain medium and saturable absorber. Dual wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers are observed at approximately 1530 and 1560 nm with 22.6 mW pump power threshold. Soliton pulse circulates in the laser cavity with pulse duration of 900 and 940 fs at shorter and longer wavelengths, respectively. This work presents a viable option in developing a low threshold mode-locked laser source with closely spaced dual wavelength femtosecond pulses in the C-band wavelength region.

Asynchronous and synchronous dual-wavelength pulse generation in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with a mode-locker

The evolution from asynchronous to synchronous dual-wavelength pulse generation in a passively mode-locked fiber laser is experimentally investigated by tailoring the intracavity dispersion. Through tuning the intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the birefringence-induced filter effect, asynchronous dual-wavelength soliton pulses can be generated until the intracavity anomalous dispersion is reduced to ∼8  fs/nm. The transition from asynchronous to synchronous pulse generation is then observed at an elevated pump power in the presence of residual anomalous dispersion, and it is shown that pulses are temporally synchronized at the mode-locker in the cavity. Spectral sidelobes are observed and could be attributed to the four-wave-mixing effect between dual-wavelength pulses at the carbon nanotube mode-locker. These results could provide further insight into the design and realization of such dual-wavelength ultrafast lasers for different applications such as dual-comb metrology as well as better understanding of the inter-pulse interactions in such dual-comb lasers.

Wavelength-spacing controllable, dual-wavelength synchronously mode locked Er:fiber laser oscillator based on dual-branch nonlinear polarization rotation technique

A wavelength-spacing controllable, dual-wavelength synchronously mode locked Er:fiber laser oscillator based on dual-branch nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique was presented. The center wavelengths were at 1542 nm and 1561 nm, which had pulse durations of 1.38 ps and 1.70 ps, respectively. Experimentally, the synchronous mode locking was achieved by precisely adjusting the cavity length of one branch. A tolerance in the cavity length mismatch of 0.46 mm for synchronous mode locking was demonstrated. The frequency difference of the two pulse trains was measured to be less than 1 mHz. Additionally, this synchronously mode locked dual-wavelength laser had a wavelength tunable range of about 5.6 nm, and a controllable wavelength spacing from 10.5 nm to 28.2 nm, corresponding to a tunable frequency difference from 1.32 THz to 3.26 THz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of synchronously mode locked dual-wavelength output directly from a Er:fiber laser oscillator, using dual-branch NPR technique.

Passively synchronized Q-switched and mode-locked dual-band Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber lasers using a common graphene saturable absorber

Dual-band fiber lasers are emerging as a promising technology to penetrate new industrial and medical applications from their dual-band properties, in addition to providing compactness and environmental robustness from the waveguide structure. Here, we demonstrate the use of a common graphene saturable absorber and a single gain medium (Tm³⁺:ZBLAN fiber) to implement (1) a dual-band fiber ring laser with synchronized Q-switched pulses at wavelengths of 1480 nm and 1840 nm, and (2) a dual-band fiber linear laser with synchronized mode-locked pulses at wavelengths of 1480 nm and 1845 nm. Q-switched operation at 1480 nm and 1840 nm is achieved with a synchronized repetition rate from 20 kHz to 40.5 kHz. For synchronous mode-locked operation, pulses with full-width at half maximum durations of 610 fs and 1.68 ps at wavelengths of 1480 nm and 1845 nm, respectively, are obtained at a repetition rate of 12.3 MHz. These dual-band pulsed sources with an ultra-broadband wavelength separation of ~360 nm will add new capabilities in applications including optical sensing, spectroscopy, and communications.

Graphene-clad microfibre saturable absorber for ultrafast fibre lasers

Graphene, whose absorbance is approximately independent of wavelength, allows broadband light–matter interactions with ultrafast responses. The interband optical absorption of graphene can be saturated readily under strong excitation, thereby enabling scientists to exploit the photonic properties of graphene to realize ultrafast lasers. The evanescent field interaction scheme of the propagating light with graphene covered on a D-shaped fibre or microfibre has been employed extensively because of the nonblocking configuration. Obviously, most of the fibre surface is unused in these techniques. Here, we exploit a graphene-clad microfibre (GCM) saturable absorber in a mode-locked fibre laser for the generation of ultrafast pulses. The proposed all-surface technique can guarantee a higher efficiency of light–graphene interactions than the aforementioned techniques. Our GCM-based saturable absorber can generate ultrafast optical pulses within 1.5 μm. This saturable absorber is compatible with current fibre lasers and has many merits such as low saturation intensities, ultrafast recovery times, and wide wavelength ranges. The proposed saturable absorber will pave the way for graphene-based wideband photonics.

Fully-integrated dual-wavelength all-fiber source for mode-locked square-shaped mid-IR pulse generation via DFG in PPLN

First demonstration of a dissipative soliton resonance (DSR), double-clad (DC) active fiber, mode-locked figure-8 laser (F8L) enabling simultaneous amplification of 1064 nm seed signal is presented. Appropriate design supported peak power clamping (PPC) effect in the laser resonator and enabled easy tuning of the generated, square-shaped pulses from 20 ns to 170 ns. By incorporating a circulator-based isolating element in the directional loop of the laser, record pulse energy of 2.13 μJ was achieved, directly at the output of the resonator. The usability of the unique dual-wavelength design was experimentally put to a test in a difference frequency generation (DFG) setup using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal.

High-power graphene mode-locked Tm/Ho co-doped fiber laser with evanescent field interaction

Mid-infrared ultrafast fiber lasers are valuable for various applications, including chemical and biomedical sensing, material processing and military applications. Here, we report all-fiber high-power graphene mode-locked Tm/Ho co-doped fiber laser at long wavelength with evanescent field interaction. Ultrafast pulses up to 7.8 MHz are generated at a center wavelength of 1879.4 nm, with a pulse width of 4.7 ps. A graphene absorber integrated with a side-polished fiber can increase the damage threshold significantly. Harmonics mode-locking can be obtained till to the 21^th harmonics at a pump power of above 500 mW. By using one stage amplifier in the anomalous dispersion regime, the laser can be amplified up to 450 mW and the narrowest pulse duration of 1.4 ps can be obtained simultaneously. Our work paves the way to graphene Tm/Ho co-doped mode-locked all-fiber master oscillator power amplifiers as potentially efficient and economic laser sources for high-power laser applications, such as special material processing and nonlinear optical studies.

Sub-90 fs a stretched-pulse mode-locked fiber laser based on a graphene saturable absorber

In this paper a stretched-pulse, mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser based on graphene saturable absorber (SA) is presented. A 60 layer graphene/polymer composite was used as a SA. The all-fiber dispersion managed laser resonator with the repetition frequency of 21.15 MHz allows for Gaussian pulses generation with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 48 nm. The generated chirped pulses were compressed outside the cavity to the 88 fs using a piece of standard single mode fiber. The average output power and pulse energy were of 1.5 mW and 71 pJ, respectively.

Dual-wavelength synchronous ultrashort pulses from a mode-locked Yb-doped multicore fiber laser with spatially dispersed gain

A laser based on a ribbon multicore ytterbium doped fiber where different cores amplified different spectral bands, has been mode-locked with a single saturable absorber mirror. Tunable dual wavelength synchronized picosecond pulses were obtained. Compensation of differential cavity roundtrip times was achieved in the fiber.

Ultrafast thulium-doped fiber laser mode locked with black phosphorus

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, the usage of black phosphorus (BP) as a saturable absorber for the mode locking of a thulium-doped fiber laser. We have experimentally shown that BP exhibits saturable absorption in the 2 μm wavelength range and supports ultrashort pulse generation. The saturable absorber was based on mechanically exfoliated BP deposited on a fiber connector tip. The laser was capable of generating 739 fs pulses centered at 1910 nm. Our results show that BP might be considered as a universal broadband saturable absorber that could successfully compete with graphene or other low-dimension nanomaterials.

Sub-130 fs mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser based on topological insulator

In this work we present for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a stretched-pulse mode-locked fiber laser based on topological insulator. As a saturable absorber (SA) a ~0.5 mm thick lump of antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) deposited on a side-polished fiber was used. Such a SA introduced 6% modulation depth with 43% of non-saturable losses, which is sufficient for supporting stretched-pulse mode-locking. The ring laser resonator based on Er-doped active fiber with managed intracavity dispersion was capable of generating ultrashort optical pulses with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 30 nm centered at 1565 nm. The pulses with duration of 128 fs were repeated with a frequency of 22.32 MHz.
