Record-high and robust 17.125 Gb/s gross-rate over 25 km SSMF transmissions of real-time dual-band optical OFDM signals directly modulated by 1 GHz RSOAs

Modified low-bandwidth sub-Nyquist sampling receiving scheme in an IM/DD OFDM system enabled by improved optical shaping

In this paper, a modified low-bandwidth sub-Nyquist sampling receiving scheme enabled by optical shaping is investigated in an intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system, which can reduce the sampling rate and analog bandwidth of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at the receiving end. By changing the phase matrix of preprocessing, the modified scheme can distinguish different groups of data only by controlling the delay of the shaping module. In addition, the proposed RF sharing architecture can further reduce the cost and increase the feasibility of the scheme. Based on arcsine digital pre-distortion (DPD) technology, a DPD optical pulse shaping scheme is proposed to achieve better spectrum aliasing in the optical domain. With the help of the DPD shaping, we successfully experimentally demonstrate the 12.5-GHz/44.45-Gbit/s IM/DD OFDM system with low-bandwidth (3.125 GHz) and sub-Nyquist sampling rate (6.25 GSa/s) ADC. The experiment results show that the proposed scheme can not only effectively achieve low-bandwidth reception, but also achieve about 0.4 dB receiver sensitivity improvement compared with the traditional high-bandwidth scheme at BER of 3.8×10^-3 after 10.2 km standard single mode fiber transmission, which indicates that the proposed scheme is a promising low-cost candidate to provide large transmission capacity for the next-generation network.

Increasing data rate of an optical IMDD system using a cost-efficient dual-band transmission scheme based on RTZ DAC and sub-Nyquist sampling ADC

A cost-efficient dual-band transmission scheme based on return-to-zero (RTZ)-mode digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and sub-Nyquist sampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed in this paper. The scheme can increase the data rate and meanwhile halve the required sampling rate of the DAC/ADC in optical intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) transmission system. Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate a dual-band discrete Fourier transformation spread (DFT-S) OFDM intensity modulation direct detection (IMDD) system. Although the sampling rate of the DAC and ADC used in the receiver is only 5-GSa/s and there is no mixer and oscillator at the transmitter and receiver side, 22-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission with up to 26.33-Gb/s data rate is successfully realized. The experimental results show that in the system, the first sub-band transmission based on 128-QAM mapping can achieve a bit error rate (BER) below 3.8 × 10^-3. The second sub-band transmission based on 32-QAM mapping can achieve a BER below 2.4 × 10^-2. The spectral efficiency (SE) of the first sub-band signal is up to 6.14 bit/s/Hz and the SE of the second sub-band signal is up to 4.39 bit/s/Hz.

OLT-centralized sampling frequency offset compensation scheme for OFDM-PON

We propose an optical line terminal (OLT)-centralized sampling frequency offset (SFO) compensation scheme for adaptively-modulated OFDM-PON systems. By using the proposed SFO scheme, the phase rotation and inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by SFOs between OLT and multiple optical network units (ONUs) can be centrally compensated in the OLT, which reduces the complexity of ONUs. Firstly, the optimal fast Fourier transform (FFT) size is identified in the intensity-modulated and direct-detection (IMDD) OFDM system in the presence of SFO. Then, the proposed SFO compensation scheme including phase rotation modulation (PRM) and length-adaptive OFDM frame has been experimentally demonstrated in the downlink transmission of an adaptively modulated optical OFDM with the optimal FFT size. The experimental results show that up to ± 300 ppm SFO can be successfully compensated without introducing any receiver performance penalties.

Novel toggle-rate based energy-efficient scheme for heavy load real-time IM-DD OFDM-PON with ONU LLID identification in time-domain using amplitude decision

A novel low complexity and energy-efficient scheme by controlling the toggle-rate of ONU with time-domain amplitude identification is proposed for a heavy load downlink in an intensity-modulation and direct-detection orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (IM-DD OFDM-PON). In a conventional OFDM-PON downlink, all ONUs have to perform demodulation for all the OFDM frames in a broadcast way no matter whether the frames are targeted to or not, which causes a huge energy waste. However, in our scheme, the optical network unit (ONU) logical link identifications (LLIDs) are inserted into each downlink OFDM frame in time-domain at the optical line terminal (OLT) side. At the ONU side, the LLID is obtained with a low complexity and high precision amplitude identification method. The ONU sets the toggle-rate of demodulation module to zero when the frames are not targeted to, which avoids unnecessary digital signal processing (DSP) energy consumption. Compared with the sleep-mode methods consisting of clock recovery and synchronization, toggle-rate shows its advantage in fast changing, which is more suitable for the heavy load scenarios. Moreover, for the first time to our knowledge, the characteristics of the proposed scheme are investigated in a real-time IM-DD OFDM system, which performs well at the received optical power as low as -21dBm. The experimental results show that 25.1% energy consumption can be saved in the receiver compared to the conventional configurations.

Improving performance of channel equalization in RSOA-based WDM-PON by QR decomposition

In reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA)-based wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON), the bit rate is limited by low modulation bandwidth of RSOAs. To overcome the limitation, we apply QR decomposition in channel equalizer (QR-CE) to achieve successive interference cancellation (SIC) for discrete Fourier transform spreading orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) signal. Using an RSOA with a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of only ~800 MHz, we experimentally demonstrate a 15.5-Gb/s over 20-km SSMF DFT-S OFDM transmission with QR-CE. The experimental results show that DFTS-OFDM with QR-CE attains much better BER performance than DFTS-OFDM and OFDM with conventional channel equalizers. The impacts of several parameters on QR-CE are investigated. It is found that 2 sub-bands in one OFDM symbol and 1 pilot in each sub-band are sufficient to achieve optimal performance and maintain the high spectral efficiency.

Robust and tunable 16.375Gb/s dual-band optical OFDM transmissions over directly modulated VCSEL-based 200m OM2 MMFs

Utilizing low-cost, 2.2GHz modulation bandwidth, uncooled and standalone directly modulated VCSEL (DM-VCSEL)-based real-time dual-band optical OFDM (OOFDM) transmitters, aggregated 16.375Gb/s transmissions of OOFDM signals having bandwidths approximately 3.8 times higher than the VCSEL manufacturer-specified modulation bandwidths, are experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, over 200m OM2 MMF links based on intensity modulation and direct detection. The aggregated signal transmission capacities of the aforementioned links vary by just 8% for various OM2 MMFs ranging from 100m to 500m, and by just 10% over a 1GHz passband carrier frequency detuning range. Such dual-band OOFDM adaptability-induced excellent performance robustness and large passband frequency tunability can significantly relax the requirements on VCSEL modulation bandwidth for achieving specific transmission performances for cost-sensitive application scenarios such as data centers.

Self-seeding-based 10Gb/s over 25km optical OFDM transmissions utilizing face-to-face dual-RSOAs at gain saturation

Self-seeded passive optical networks (PONs) are currently attracting extensive research interest. In this paper, a novel self-seeded PON transmitter is, for the first time, proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which incorporates two face-to-face-positioned reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) operating at their gain saturation regions: one RSOA directly driven by an upstream electrical signal and the other RSOA biased at a fixed current. Detailed experimental explorations are undertaken of the dynamic performance characteristics of the proposed transmitter. It is shown that, in comparison with previously reported self-seeded transmitters each employing a reflective mirror and a single electrical signal-driven RSOA, the proposed transmitter has a number of salient advantages including, considerably narrowed optical signal spectra, up to 16dB reduction in RINs of intensity-modulated optical signals, and residual intensity modulation crosstalk suppression as high as 10.7dB. The aforementioned features enable experimental demonstrations of real-time self-seeded 10Gb/s optical OFDM (OOFDM) transmitters. In particular, by making use of two low-cost RSOAs having their 3-dB modulation bandwidths as small as 1.125GHz, 10Gb/s over 25km adaptive OOFDM transmissions with power penalties of 0.6dB are experimentally achieved in the simple self-seeded IMDD PON systems.
