Refractive index sensor based on the leaky radiation of a microfiber

Visualized concentration sensors based on fluorescence indication in a dye-doped polymer microwire

We demonstrate visualized microwire sensors based on fluorescence indication for detecting the concentrations of the aqueous solutions. The single Rhodamine (RhB) doped polymer microwires (PMWs) which are excited by the waveguiding excitation method are used as the sensory area. According to the fluorescent microimages of the PMWs, stable periodic oscillations could be observed in the RhB-doped PMWs. The fluorescent period which is dependent on the concentration is further analyzed by image processing and information extraction algorithms. Corresponding to a 1.0% change, the period length change of the visualized sensor reaches ∼380 nm, ∼270 nm, and ∼300 nm in NaCl, KCl, and sucrose solutions, respectively. The dection limits of the three solutions are estimated to be around 1.5 × 10^-4%. The dye-doped PMW sensors by fluorescence indication and image analysis proposed here realize the direct visualized detection in concentration sensing, making it possible to avoid the challenges of stability and weak signal detection and offer a potentially stable and cost-effective approach for micro/nanofiber sensor application.

Observation of the acceleration of light in a tapered optical fiber

One of the most fascinating aspects of quantum fields in curved spacetime is the Unruh effect. The direct experimental detection of Unruh temperature has remained an elusive challenge up to now. Gradient optical waveguides manipulating the dispersion of photons are assumed to realize the great acceleration of effective particles, leading to a high effective Unruh temperature. However, experimentally achieving this optical waveguide has not yet been reported. In this work, we exploit a tapered fiber to simulate the accelerated motion of effective particles and obtain an effective Unruh temperature. When light propagating in a tapered fiber is affected by the external high refractive index medium, a leaky phenomenon akin to bremsstrahlung will be observed, and the pattern of leaky radiation is dependent on the acceleration of photons. During the experiments, different accelerations corresponding to different Unruh temperatures are achieved by controlling the shape of the tapered waveguide.

Optical Fano resonance sensing of bilayer asymmetric photonic crystal slabs as biosensors

A bilayer asymmetric photonic crystal slab made of porous Si₃N₄/SiO₂ is designed as a biosensor by considering the optical performance of this photonic crystal slab with a square lattice based on rigorous coupled-wave analysis theory and wavelength interrogation methods. The results show that this bilayer asymmetric photonic crystal can be used as a biosensor according to its excellent linearity relationship between the guided resonance peak shift and refractive index of aqueous solution with or without glycerol. The theoretical sensitivity value of the bilayer asymmetric photonic crystal biosensor is achieved as (S>286  nm/RIU) in the wavelength range from 1400 nm to 1600 nm. These results also indicate that the asymmetry bilayer structure has an important influence on its optical characteristic and sensitivity of the bilayer photonic crystal biosensor, and hence, it can be modified by changing the lattice constant and slab thickness. This research paper is very useful for understanding the application and design of biosensors based on porous structures.

Ultrasensitive optical sensing in aqueous solution based on microfiber modal interferometer

In this paper, an ultrahigh sensitivity sensing in aqueous solution for microfiber modal interferometer (MMI) is realized. The group refractive index (RI) difference between HE₁₁ and HE₁₂ mode will come down to 0 at a certain wavelength, resulting in ultrahigh sensitivity near this wavelength. MMI with different diameters have their individual ultrasensitive wavelength band, which indicates the broad range of optional probing wavelength and more liberal diameter condition on fiber fabrication. In the experimentation, infrared absorption band in water around 1360-1600nm is easy to keep away by adjusting the microfiber diameter. As a result, an ultrahigh sensitivity of 14.95 pm/ppm is realized for sodium nitrate at 1320nm, whose equivalent sensitivity is about 1.26 × 10⁵-nm/RIU for RI, which is much higher than most of the existing naked sensors with magnitude of 10²-10⁴nm/RIU.

Highly sensitive refractive index sensor based on cascaded microfiber knots with Vernier effect

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a refractive index (RI) sensor based on cascaded microfiber knot resonators (CMKRs) with Vernier effect. Deriving from high proportional evanescent field of microfiber and spectrum magnification function of Vernier effect, the RI sensor shows high sensitivity as well as high detection resolution. By using the method named "Drawing-Knotting-Assembling (DKA)", a compact CMKRs is fabricated for experimental demonstration. With the assistance of Lorentz fitting algorithm on the transmission spectrum, sensitivity of 6523nm/RIU and detection resolution up to 1.533 × 10(-7)RIU are obtained in the experiment which show good agreement with the numerical simulation. The proposed all-fiber RI sensor with high sensitivity, compact size and low cost can be widely used for chemical and biological detection, as well as the electronic/magnetic field measurement.
